Your hosts invite you to enjoy a visit to the land that James Michener wrote about in his book 'Chesapeake.' And remember to keep this visit a secret '...lest you awaken the rest of the world as to what a sequestered paradise this place is on the Eastern Shore.' (James Michener)

You will be staying in a charming, waterfront, carriage house located on a five-acre estate with surrounding tall pines and stately cedars. Your living quarters, with private entrance and second-floor balcony, will overlook the pool and English garden below. Queen-size bed with down comforter and memory foam mattress, terry robes, overstuffed seating, antique furniture, and rich oak floors all add to a romantic and homelike ambiance. If you become chilled, just flip on the gas fireplace. Enjoy peace and quiet, observe wildlife, watch the sunrise from the beach, and sip a glass of wine on the dock just before sunset.

Take walks or ride a bicycle along the mile long peninsula road that leads to Deerpond. You are likely to see bald eagles or osprey soaring over your head as you walk. Visit Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge just a few miles away and observe many different birds of prey in their natural habitat. Drive into Cambridge to take in the many antique stores, play a round of golf at the new Hyatt Resort and Country Club, or eat dinner at the fine restaurants of the Hyatt. Better yet, sample some of the famous Maryland crab cakes at one of the local restaurants near Deerpond. They are not fancy but they sure are good!

We have a deep water mooring for guests and can provide deep water dock access (6 ft depth) by special arrangement. This is very rare for the Eastern Shore.

We arrived at the carriage house late Friday night, running in a 5k the next morning. The accommodations were clean and inviting. Throughout the week we were greated with baked goods. We also were able to utilize the kayak onsite, the outdoor picnic table to eat our blue crabs, and the wonderful deck that offered great views during the day and night. We had a jam packed trip, but have already promised ourselves a return visit. Take you bikes, as the area is great for exploring on pedal and paddle. the only downside were the "biting midges" or "no-see-ums" which are small gnats that fed on us during the stay. We got bit a few times while in the apartment, but were able to help with bug spray and after bite medicine. Exploring the Delmarva coast was great. While there, think about visiting the following: St. Michaels and oxford via the Bellevue Ferry, Cambridge downtown at the gastropub, and leaky petes. Baltimore for an orioles game, and anapolis for site seeing. Try the Pit Beef sandwiches at Chap's or Pioneer Pit Beef while in Baltimore. A must try is the "orange crush" a refreshing alcoholic drink made with fresh squeezed oranges, vodka, triple sec and sprite. Crab imperial is great. Buy local seafood cheap at Kool Ice and Seafood. The guys are great there, and you can fix dinner in the apartment easily with the fresh herbs offered in the garden. Ocean City and Rehoboth Beach are beautiful this time of year, without the congestion of traffic and families that have already gone back to school. Bring a kite to fly on the beach. A MUST SEE is kayaking with the wild ponies on Asseteague Island. Everything was absolutely beautiful.

Others have told about the cleanliness of the place, comfortable bed, relaxing scenery, cordial hosts, but I want to add about viewing the stars. Without light pollution, I felt as if I could reach up and touch the stars. We also enjoyed the sunrises. Wonderful area for bicycling and kayaking. Oh we enjoyed our stay so much and hope to return!

Owner response: Cathy and I observe guests all the time as they arrive all stressed up and leave all relaxed. That is what vacations should do and Deerpond, with a lot of help from nature, has a way of doing it every time.

My husband and I wanted to explore the Eastern Shore and wanted to stay in a location with with lots of opportunities for bike riding, bird watching, bay watching, etc., but also wanted to feel as if we were staying in a home-away-from-home atmosphere rather than the usual hotel. Deerpond was perfect! Cathy and Bob have a wonderful carriage house. Nicely decorated and every thing you need in the kitchen. The garden and waterfront views are beautiful. I awoke one morning at 6 AM and was mesmerized by the sunrise. Three of my favorite things we did while in the area were bike riding in Oxford, riding the Oxford-Bellevue ferry, and going to the Maritime Heritage Museum in St. Michael's. Best crab cake lunch with a view was in Tilghman's at Harrison's Chesapeake House. Bob and Cathy were perfect hosts (as were Red and Chessie). We hope to return again.

Although we enjoyed the beauty of the Eastern Shore in general, the best part of our visit was certainly Deerpond itself! Whether enjoying the beautiful pool, sitting in the shade of the cedars near the water, walking on Brooks Road or having fun in the tandem kayak, every moment at this wonderful spot was a joy! We really don't see what Cathy and Bob could do to make it any more perfect. What a gem! Restaurant recommendations: we went to Old Salty's and Suicide Bridge (both om the water's edge) and The High Spot (downtown Cambridge) and can heartily recommend all three. Take a detour off of Route 16 nearby to see the Old Trinity Church, a wonderful little piece of history.

We loved our week at Deerpond! The carriage house, the pool, the gardens are even better than the pictures shown here. Spotless and VERY comfortable bed too. We enjoyed short drives to Hooper's Island, Cambridge and Blackwater Refuge in addition to enjoying dinner at the High Spot in Cambridge and Palm Beach Willie's..The special treats that mysteriously appeared at our door several times during the week were wonderful and a very fun personal touch from Bob and Cathy. Thank you both - amazing!

We had a most wonderful time at the Carriage House! Even with the unprecedented heat, we were able to enjoy the ambiance and hospitality of Bob and Cathy. Their attention to detail and the care that went into planning their glorious estate were abundant everywhere. We were able to take in the history and the nature around the Eastern Shore in the mornings and then relax by the pool in the afternoons when the heat was too great! Cathy's scones and breakfast breads were an added touch that made our stay special!

Owner response: The pool often becomes an oasis for guests on a hot summer day. For those that seek the shade of a tree, you will find it in two places: out by the water's edge under a cedar tree and at the picnic table under one of the large Bradford pear trees.

The carriage house at Deerpond is the perfect getaway for one or two people. There’s plenty to do in the area, but guests might not even want to leave this beautiful property. I stayed here on a writing retreat, expecting to spend my four-and-a-half days inside typing away. While the view overlooking the pool, the marsh and the bay was spectacular, I couldn’t resist being outside. There are several seating areas where one can enjoy the gardens and the waterfront breezes. There’s also a quiet, three-mile walk on the road in front of the house, where I regularly saw a blue heron and a family of deer. The best part of the carriage house is that the large space is divided into five, beautifully decorated, living areas, so you feel as though you are in your own house vs. a hotel room. The hosts are very welcoming, and they’ve thought of everything one would need to enjoy a comfortable stay. I especially liked the surprise treats and thoughtful notes. Overall, I came away feeling like I had just visited friends who happen to live in one of the loveliest places on the Eastern shore!

Owner response: Deerpond is the kind of place to take it easy and relax. Leave the presures of work behind and enjoy nature for a little while. We have spotted that blue heron, mentioned in the review, by the side of the salt marsh pond in Deerpond; so, be sure to bring your camera and see if you can snap a photo of this graceful bird.

My husband and I had one of our best vacations ever at Deerpond. The apartment is beautiful and comfortable, and the view from the balcony is awesome. The entire property is gorgeous and well-kept, and the owners surprised us with little gifts almost every day--fresh-baked zucchini bread, tomatoes and cut flowers from the garden, and information about an outdoor concert in town. We made full use of the pool, which we had to ourselves every day, and we ate at some of the recommended restaurants. The biking in this area is fantastic, and the Wildlife Refuge is a true gem.

Owner response: And you forgot to mention the bald eagle that flew overhead on your walk down the street leading to Deerpond We are really looking forward to seeing your photos of that! He resides in the neighborhood and occasionally does flyovers at our request. Truthfully, there is a lot to see and enjoy at Deerpond if you just let your senses roam free.

                      Owner info

                      Year Purchased: 1997

About the owner: Unlike many other properties where you are given a set of keys and a phone number to call, your hosts live on the property in the separate manor house, friendly and available to answer all your questions and give their recommendations for restaurants, things to see and possible places to go during your pleasurable stay at Deerpond.

                      Why the Owner Chose Cambridge:
The waterfront setting with acres of land and a $million backyard.

The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
The waterfront setting changes by the minute as birds come and go, squirrels and rabbits play on the lawns, deer graze on the grasses (and sometimes the plants –which is not a good thing) and boats pass in the distance. It’s like living in a game reserve by the water. Then there is the peaceful quiet at night with almost none of the man-made sounds. You sleep like you never slept before.
