FOREST LEDGE

This historic Adirondack "cottage" was built in the 1880s on land belonging to Asher Durand, the famous painter of the Hudson River School, who painted in this area. It has original exposed pine framing throughout.

This mountainside clearing includes several other cottages built in the Golden Age. Our neighbors, including many relatives, welcome newcomers, children and pets, but not if they disturb the peace.

THE GROUND FLOOR has a newly remodeled and insulated kitchen with sunny breakfast table and new appliances; a new bathroom with shower; a large living room and dining room accommodating 12 diners--both rooms with wood-burning fireplaces, and views of the lake and mountains opposite. We also have a cozy small library/sitting room for reading and games, a stone terrace, and large furnished porch.

UPSTAIRS are three double (2 Queen) bedrooms, two screened sleeping porches, two additional single bedrooms, and two bathrooms. One bathroom with clawfoot tub is attached to the master bedroom; the other, with shower/tub, is accessible from a hall.

OUTSIDE is a lawn, cliffside sitting area, hemlock grove, and long private shoreline looking across the mile-wide lake to wooded islands and mountains. Our home is largely surrounded by unspoiled state forest. Our view of the lake and the mountains beyond has no homes, roads, or other man-made structures. Lake water here is so clean we can drink it! Our excellent water now comes from a well, dug for winter use.

Our dock protects a quiet bay and natural sandy beach (one of few on the lake). Our slip accommodates boats up to about 17 feet (larger boats may be accommodated at the Huletts Landing marina). Boat delivery can be arranged (i.e. from Morgan Marine in The Hague, NY). Please, no jet skis.

A one-mile walk, boat ride or drive takes you to Huletts Landing where there are two churches, a US Post Office, tennis courts, golf course, a marina, bar and snack bar. Shopping and restaurants are 20 min away in Whitehall.

  • Washer: Water and kilowatt conservation is feature of this machine. Limited use appreciated.
  • Dryer: Line drying outside is preferred.
  • Linens Provided: Linens are optional, at extra cost for washing, to be arranged with housekeeper.

  • Wood Fireplace: To be used very carefully, with owner's permission and instructions, under constant adult supervision

  • Telephone: Local calls to boat rental, emergency, and housekeeper, etc.
  • Free Long Distance: We leave one phonecard for guests. If you talk a lot, you will need to please bring or buy your own card !

  • Pet Friendly: Only with owners' permission; must be well-behaved and quiet.
  • Handicapped Accessible (may have limitations): See wheelchair limitations below.
  • Wheelchair Accessible (may have limitations): Wheelchair possible, but must be raised one step to enter ground floor, and cannot fit into downstairs bathroom.
  • Kid Friendly: Small assortment of board games and toys available in our downstairs den. Sandy beach is perfect for young & old. Parent supervision at all outdoor activities recommended. Please no loud noise at night.
