Owner's Profile
Owner Description
Year Purchased: 2004
We are the Miller family & own this wonderful lake front home with our 3 daughters & their husbands. We live in Holden Beach NC & our daughters live in Charlotte NC & Atlanta GA
Why the Owner Chose Fair Play
We came upon this beautiful spot by happenstance & were fortunate enough to be able to purchase the 2 adjoining lots as well, which provides the feeling of being in the foothills of the mountains along with fabulous lake views. We built this wonderful retreat in 2004 & had a great time searching for the special furniture & accessories for our lake get-away.
The Unique Benefits of this House
We have the benefit of being located in Oconee County's golden corner, so we're just minutes away from the spectacular mountain town of Highlands NC & Tokeena Gorge in Ga as well as some wonderful National Parks which are all listed in our in house rental Guide. There is golfing nearby at Foxwood Hills Golf Course as well as The Clemson University golf course. Closer by in Walhalla, there are numerous antique shops where we always seem to find treasures, as well as Ram Cat Alley in Seneca with a fantastic antique shop & a discount clothing store called The Fashion Shak. It's fun poking through the racks of stuff until you find that fantastic designer piece of clothing at a fraction of the original cost. There is also a larger version of this cool store in Anderson, just 20 miles from the house.

This house was beautiful! We had a family reunion there for Thanksgiving week and it was worth the money. All of us were amazed at the elegance of this property! It was clean, had all the amenities we hoped for. There is an amazing screened in back porch with a fireplace that is the perfect place to relax and unwind at night! Rent this place you will not be disappointed!

Looked around a lot before renting this home and was very pleased with the choice. Two wonderful common areas both with televisions and great seating upstairs and downstairs for spreading out, a wonderful kitchen with a large dining table for group meals, lots of comfortable beds, and again two great hangout areas one up, one down outside with a view of the lake. Water is a very short (and somewhat steep) walk from the house. We visited in August of 2011 when the lake level was down, but were able to bring a boat to the covered dock which was sitting in about four feet of water. It was about a seven minute cruise to open water for skiing -- the house sits up in a well protected cove. The house is really beautiful and perfectly maintained. Working with the owner was especially pleasant as well as she went out of her way to be helpful in making the weekend special. Overall a really nice house with high level furnishings, decorations and comfort items with an owner who was lovely to work with. I highly recommend this rental!

Great Home for our Family Reunion

We enjoyed this lakehouse very much. The inside is very nicely decorated and the kitchen well equipped. The bedrooms on the main floor are especially large which was perfect for us because we had toddlers who wanted to sleep on the floor in the same rooms as their parents. The kitchen, dining room (with very large table), and family room are essentially one big room which is great for a crowd. The lot is very private (lots of trees and no neighbors) and the covered dock was very convenient to park our boat. The only down side for us was that the water level was very low when we stayed so the boat was barely dockable and the water around the dock was so stagnant that it was not inviting to swim in! Bottom line - a great lakehouse with very nice owners. Just make sure lake levels are high enough for your boat if boating is the focus of your vacation.

The lake retreat at Fontana was even better than the original description. The house had comfortable appointments, very clean, views like something out of a travel magazine, fully equipped kitchen, high end appliances, banquet sized dining table for family dinners, and large comfortable sofas and lounge chairs for TV viewing and reading. (house had great reading material to enjoy) The boat dock was great for sunbathing and fishing (with much success) off the dock. The very best for me personally was the screened porch and decks off the upstairs bedrooms for morning coffee and sipping evening beverages. The community pool and easily accessible golf courses were added fun. The nearby towns of Seneca and Anderson offer shopping and restaurants to meet most any needs. Internet service would have been great but is probably not accessible in the serene environment. This retreat would be great for people of all ages--couples, families with teens, toddlers, groups. Definitely a place for a return visit!
Owner response:Our family strives to make Fontana as comfortable as possible for our renters & we encourage you to contact us if you have any questions or concerns after arriving. Thank you in advance for choosing Fontana & we hope that you enjoy it as much as we do.

Our family of 9 spent a long weekend last year at Fontana & liked it so much that we are going back this year. It is a beautiful home that is amenable to a large group such as ours, that includes young children. It was very clean, big enough that we could each be doing something different if we wished. We all painted pictures on the porch and played games and swam with the children. Can't wait to go back!

We took a group of seniors to the lake for the weekend. The parents stayed upstairs and the kids down. The owner was understanding about us taking the girls for their last trip together before college. The house is beautiful and we loved the screen porch that overlooks the lake. The dock is large and the water is up so the girls had a great time. This is the perfect get-away for a large family, or girl’s weekend, or maybe three or four couples getting together. One big thing …the beds are very comfortable. The house is exactly as the photos appear on-line and was well maintained and very clean. You will not be disappointed. We would definitely recommend to any of our family or friends.

This house provided us a fabulous getaway. We rented it to get together with another family. It was secluded just as the description said, but there is plenty to do. The layout is perfect for 2 or 3 families of 4+. We'll definitely rent again.

Make sure to take pictures/videos of the house before you leave. My family cleaned the house from top to bottom before leaving. Owner claims we stayed an extra night and left a mess. Communication was limited to dispute this issue and security deposit check was cashed before issue was resolved. Terrible ending to a nice week. Be careful of dishonest owners.
Owner response:We have been renting Fontana since the house was built 6 years ago. The house is being cleaned by the same person since then as well. We take pride in our home & strive to make sure that it is cleaned throughly after each renter leaves & our cleaning person lets us know of any problem or damage at that time.In this case, the renters were supposed to leave on Saturday morning. Our cleaning person arrived there on Sunday morning to see a car in the driveway & the door to our home open. She turned her car around & left, assuming that she got the departure date incorrect. She arrived back at the house on Monday morning & found nobody there & she unlocked the door & let herself in. She called me in horror & disbelief at what she found. The mess she found was not describable. All the comforters in the entire house had to be brought to the laundromat & there was a disgusting mess left all over the back porch which had to be hosed down before any cleaning could begin. When I emailed the renters and told them what was found, they said that they did not leave the house that way. Either they were not telling the truth or they forgot to secure all the doors as they were supposed to do before leaving & somebody else came in & left that mess. Either way, they were responsible for the nasty mess that was left. I did use their damage deposit to pay for an additional full day of cleaning & the laundromat costs.
