About this property

A stylishly converted farmhouse close to Ronda with included daily housekeeping

El Tejar is the highest house in the small village of Montecorto, just 15 minutes from Ronda, with amazing panoramic views of the Grazalema mountains.

In High Season from March to October the property is only rented on a weekly basis with all rentals beginning and ending on Saturdays.

This exceptionally romantic house (featured in several interior design magazine) is decorated in Andalusian/Moroccan style. Whitewashed beams and terracotta floors have been stylishly combined with warm colour washes. There are hundreds of books, CD players in all rooms, a collection of beautiful paintings and prints as well as wifi internet (with desktop iMac). The 4 large bedrooms have the same bright/ethnic feel: linen is top range, mattresses too, and all are en suite.

A charming housekeeper, Francisca, cleans and tidies every day (if you so wish) and can prepare typical Andalusian meals. Sculpted into the hillside is a circular pool surrounded by terraces shaded by olive, almond and citrus trees. El Tejar is an exceptional holiday home - not just an ordinary villa - and perfect for a relaxing, secluded and spoiling holiday.

Included daily help: Two hours of daily cleaning help from a charming, and discreet Spanish maid is included in the weekly rental price.
(Occasionally guests prefer for Francisca not to come up to El Tejar to clean and tidy. No problem....).

What is so unique about El Tejar is that, if you should wish, the housekeeper can also prepare meals. She can either make you a wide range of 'tapas' for you or can cook a full 3 three course meal (this is for a minimum of 4 people) which will be served to you at your candlelit dining table or out on the dining terrace when the weather is warm enough.

Why is this place so exceptional?: What's so special about El Tejar is that although you're at the edge of the village, when you sit on the terraces or by the pool no other house is visible. You have the best of both worlds: easy access to village shops and bars and an utterly secluded location.

We believe we have the most comprehensive guest information of any rental property in the area which includes information on the best local bars and restaurants, where to visit, and detailed route notes of the area's most beautiful walks including our own guide books to the area (see Amazon.com: Guy Hunter-Watts 'Walking in Andalucia' and 'The Andalucían Coast to Coast Walk', Santana Books).

Renowned travel writer Alastair Sawday recently included El Tejar amongst his top ten favourite places to stay in Southern Spain and we've had features written about the house in several UK newspapers. We are also recommended as a rental property by i-escape, the award-winning travel website.

A bit more about the village and the area: Montecorto is a quiet, friendly village. There are a number of bars and restaurants including one in the pine forest where you can have al fresco meals. There will always be somebody who is keen to talk to you! There is a bakers, four small grocery stores - two of them provide baskets so you can pick things off the shelf, a useful thing for non-Spanish speakers - as well as a bank and chemists. A lot of the fruit and vegetables for sale in the village come from the fertile terraces beneath the village. If you prefer to shop in supermarkets, there are several choices in Ronda, just 15 minutes from El Tejar.

We provide arriving guests with a booklet listing our favourite bars and restaurants, interesting visits in the area, maps of the village, of Ronda and of the surrounding area, a history of the house and general information about the house. We have found that this little booklet really helps you get the most out of this beautiful area where we've lived for more than two decades.

COVID UPDATE
We will be following all the government's and regional tourist office's recommendations when it comes to health and safety.

A Slice of Heaven!
Very difficult to know where to begin in describing the virtues of this house. The architecture itself is a terrific example of the vernacular and takes wonderful advantage of the site, climbing up the mountain in levels that give every room wonderful views and allows for multiple terraces and stairs. The pool with its fountain is clean and cool, even on a very hot day. The bedrooms are ample with private bathrooms that are simple and handsome, with exposed timber and pitched roofs and arches everywhere. Paqui's cooking is excellent. What a treat to have a meal prepared for you and your friends, so that after a day out, you can relax on the terrace (after taking a swim and sharing a bottle of wine). In fact you can simply reach up into the arbor above you and snip off a clump of tasty grapes if it's August. Around the corner from the house are two fig trees for dessert! Montecorto is a sweet village, close to Ronda but in tourist season you're glad not to be too close. My merry band of friends and I had a wonderful time.

Beautiful location
We had a wonderful holiday in Montecorto. The entire area is stunning this time of year, and the house has a beautiful garden. The kitchen could use an update: it was always crawling with ants because the counters/cupboards are not properly sealed. Great information from the owner about the area.

Bliss
Property beautiful and full off character. A lot of steps throughout so not suitable for anybody with mobility issues. Everything you need for cooking is there and plenty of dining areas. Property does not have air con , so house very warm but overall a fantastic experience. Montecorto a beautiful village .

An enchanting, stay in a beautiful, sprawling house
The house is more of a maze than the pictures can convey - in a good way. Lots of little nooks and charming spaces, many with wonderful views to the south. Guy was extremely helpful and communicative throughout, even finding a place we could rent a climbing rope (no mean feat!). We'd thoroughly recommend visiting.

Perfect House, Perfect Village
Utterly Superb. The House is idilic, quite large, but all the rooms are separated, so privacy for our grown girls! 3 terraces plus pool (!). Utterly stunning views. Daily visit by the charming maid (Pacqui)... but not intrusive. The owner emails regularly to check all is ok, but is discrete. Guy really went out of the way before and during our stay to make sure we would have everything we wanted, including organising work experience for one of our girls at a local stable for her university application. In all our years renting direct no other owner has been as helpful. The village is perfect. So beautiful and kept immaculate by the residents. 3 small supermarkets and two excellent cafe's/ bars selling tapas. The village is beautiful enough to be a tourist destination (all white, flowers, stream through the centre, blue shutters, pedestrian only).. but its not.. just you and the locals. The house is right on the edge... a short walk down the hill (4 mins??) to the cafe and shops.. or up the hill into the park. Will definitely return.

Why they chose this property

El Tejar is no ordinary rental property but rather a home-from-home. The owner lived here for more than 20 years and you will find a huge collection of books along with lots of original artwork.
This warm and welcoming atmosphere also extends out into the village where you will be given the friendliest of welcomes by the people in the village of Montecorto, one of the prettiest of the 'pueblos blanks' or 'white villages'.

What makes this property unique

Travel writer Alastair Sawday described the views from the house as 'some of the best in Spain'. The house is hidden away at the very top of the village: it's utterly secluded yet still within easy walking distance of shops, bars and restaurants.
