Tranquil & Elegant Condo with Charming Private Terrace

Welcome to Santuario #2, my charming condo in "The Sanctuary”, a private, secure garden complex, green and leafy, accessed by electronic gated pedestrian entry. Located at the end of a private cul-de-sac, in a safe family neighborhood in the historic “el centro” district of San Miguel, it is a block away from the Farmer’s and Artisan’s Market, and a flat and pleasant 10 minute stroll to the main square, “el jardin”, the main cathedral, “la parroquia”, excellent restaurants, art galleries, cultural activities and classes, and the visual charms of one of the most beautiful colonial cities in the world.
You enter your sanctuary from a private plant-filled terrace. Tranquility awaits you in an elegant and airy environment. Sunlight from floor-to-ceiling glassed-in arches bathes the living room and dining areas. There is a sideboard/table suitable for a desk. Traditional dining room furniture to seat 4-6 and charming whitewashed kitchen cabinets adds to the country charm. The living room is elegant with tall Paris-style balcony windows and locally crafted furniture, a lovely spot for watching tv or reading. A gas heater keeps you cozy and the living room area also includes an extra sofa bed for visitors.
While restaurants abound in this area, your kitchen is fully equipped with everything to make your culinary adventures rewarding. The famous local market will inspire you!
There is a powder room with a walk-in shower, light décor, and charming country tiles.
Exquisitely carved and arched wooden doors are your portals to the gracious master bedroom, generous enough to be a second sitting room. It is spacious with twin beds, carved dresser and telephone/writing table. The views to gardens outside add to the ambiance. A walk-in closet, and an ensuite 4-piece bathroom give a self-contained feeling to this large room.
As one of our renters put it: "The photos of this lovely sanctuary do not do it justice. It is tucked away in the most perfect spot for anyone who wants to be near the center of town, but in a quiet neighborhood. The privacy coupled with the centrality is just perfect. The apartment is architecturally stunning and decorated so tastefully. We were looked after and felt like we had truly hit the jackpot. I still can not believe how inexpensive this little bit of paradise was. This sanctuary of an apartment made our first trip to San Miguel truly perfect!"
You will enjoy easy access to both the bustle and ambiance of the historic center of town, and the exciting newer attraction, la Fabrica de la Aurora, a charming complex of artist's galleries and studios, antique shops, the very best interior design, jewelry and one- of-a kind clothing shops. Art, sculpture, and print-making classes will interest even the novice, and there are several excellent restaurants in the complex. La Fabrica is well known for it's Friday evening Art Walk, a chance to attend gallery openings, mingle with the artists and even arrange to purchase a treasure!

This was a very nice retreat tucked away in a quiet neighborhood , you felt safe there. It is perfect for a couple, or a couple and one other person traveling together. It has one large bedroom with it's own bathroom , the extra person slept comfortably in the living room and they had their own bathroom which was nice. You were close to the bus line , or could walk easily to the square , taxis are very inexpensive if you wanted to take one home after the day of walking around the town. The place was very private and quiet, decor was cheery , very clean with friendly management people and maid service. Fresh flowers were a nice touch!!Recommended for: Tourists without a car, families with young children, girls getaway.
Owner response: I am happy that this reviewer has emphasized the central location of this condo. You will be very close to the action of the town centre, the lovely art and gallery area of la Fabrica Aurora, and yet, you will enjoy the tranquillity and safety of a very private street. Thanks goes to my charming property manager, Erika, and to the cheerful and thorough maid, Maria. Both add great value to this location!

My sister and I spent the month of February in this charming apartment. The Sanctuary is a lovely enclave at the end of a cul-de-sac in a very secure family neighborhood. The apartment was spacious, well appointed and decorated and was very light and airy. The property manager Erika was there to greet us and help us settle in upon arrival, She was very responsive to any questions or problems that arose. There was a good gas heater that we never had occasion to use. The beds were very comfortable and the bedroom was spacious. Having a second bathroom was very helpful. The terrace was a total delight for eating and entertaining, as it was a wonderful garden like area and I just loved sitting out there in the am with my computer and coffee. I loved having both the food and artisan markets so close. We could walk to El Jardin or Aurora within ten to fifteen minutes. The walk in either case was easy and flat. I loved this apartment and location and feel no one would be disappointed with any aspect of eitherRecommended for: Age 55+, tourists without a car, romantic getaway, girls getaway.
Owner response: This reviewer, Carol really enjoyed her month here. We corresponded on details which would make her stay perfect! She really enjoyed the private terrace and did a lot of casual entertaining there. I am happy that her month with us was just about perfect on all counts!

We stayed over the holidays in this condo which is in a nice community. Were able to participate in posadas right outside the gate with the neighbors. Comfortable condo with very comfy and warm beds. Very walkable location close to artesan market, Aurora and Centro. Found some wonderful restaurants very close by and enjoyed our stay. Communications were handled efficiently with property manager and owner. We did have a car there and found a convenient parking lot within a couple of blocks which worked out nicely.Recommended for: Age 55+, tourists without a car, girls getaway, sightseeing.

My experience was unforgettable at this property. I felt right at home immediately! The photos very accurately reflect the property appearance and amenities. My concern was for convenience and safety and my concerns were immediately addressed by the owner and property manager. The neighborhood where the condo is located is quiet and secure. The distance from the Central Jardin is about a 10 minute walk away and for folk art shoppers, the Market is only about a five minute walk. I would recommend this property to couples, single men or women traveling alone or together and small families. I know there are many choices to select from, but for location, comfort, serenity, and price.......this property has it all!Recommended for: Age 55+, tourists without a car, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway.
Owner response: We were delighted that Jeanne felt serene and secure in this tranquil casita. The apartment is situated behind a delightful hotel and the Paris-style bedroom windows enjoy its garden views plus the added security of the location. Our charming street is on a cul-de-sac, a real gem tucked away- off the beaten track, yet magically situated right in the middle of the vibrant "el centro" area of San Miguel, literally a five minute flat walk to the town center. Restaurants, markets, banks, cafés, bakeries, convenience stores, boutiques and much more are right there. As the reviewer mentioned, the apartment is at the doorstep of the famous "Artisan's Market" where you can see the arts and crafts of many areas of Mexico,- silver, carpets, mirrors, and much more. This apartment is also very close to "la Fabrica", a sophisticated grouping of galleries and up scale shops which is housed in a wonderful converted weaving factory. On one Friday per month, there is an "Art Walk" where you can stroll amongst the artists in their galleries, chat with them, view their work in progress and maybe even make a purchase! These evenings are not to be missed! For trips to other areas of the city, or, if walking is a problem, taxis are very inexpensive and can be hailed at the end of the street. The very reasonable flat rate will take you anywhere in San Miguel you need to go. They are safe and the drivers are friendly and polite. You will be met by property manager, Erika, upon arrival. She will acquaint you with the apartment, and go over everything you need to know to be comfortable, and will also answer all questions you have before you arrive. She can recommend shuttle services from the airports and is available 24/7. Maria, the maid, is a gem and will keep your surroundings sparkling. Jonathan is Erika's assistant and all together it is a fine team! Speaking for Erika and myself, it is our sincere wish that any stay with us would be a highlight of your travels in Mexico.

when the temperature was 75 and sunny. Unfortunately, the small fireplace didn't do much to raise the temperature. Taking a shower just made me colder. There was virtually no hot water I boiled water on the stove to raise the room temperature. So, probably renting in May, during the hot months would be good....but, I would never rent this spot during the winter months. That was too bad, because, it's a darling place and in a good location.Owner response: I would like to re-address Amelia's concerns. It was a cold winter, you were not alone! Having said that, I have changed management and we are planning to have high effeciency heater available in the cold months. The small fireplace is more decorative than anything, so the heater will make a big difference. You should have had adequate hot water. The manager will address any of these concerns in the future. I am sorry you were uncomfortable. I have had a chance to give the apartment an upgrade, and there are new mattresses as well as high quality (and warm!) duvets for the beds. Thank you for the opportunity to respond to your honest feedback and make some necessary changes.

We agree with the first two reviews below on this spacious, charming bright apartment for a couple, with wall to wall and ceiling to floor windows making it not only exceptionally light inside, but also making you feel you are in tropical paradise. Sitting out on the spacious terrace, you are shaded by a huge tree high overhead, and are amongst greenery and flowers, punctuated by bright terra cotta walls of the other units facing you. The Mexican curved brick arches inside add to its charm and the furnishings well chosen. Having two bathrooms is a plus. It is only five minutes by foot from the long local artisan's market. The Biblioteca (library) hich continues to have many programs in English for the expatriates in the "off season." A couple more blocks to the center square with its large Gothic church where there is always something going on. The weekly Atencion newspaper in English makes it easy to find out everything that is going on. The Day of the Dead celebrations and parties were colourful and lively beyond our expectations, and lasted for days. We found it gratifying that almost all programs, such as the popular weekly house tours, are helping finance charitable services for the education and well being of the local population.Recommended for: Age 55+, tourists without a car, romantic getaway, girls getaway.

25 year old bedding and a mexican mattress means rugged sleeping. The apartment itself could use a little update from the 1980's decor, and the bathroom is just adequate. Bring all the necessities, as you may find yourself without napkins or paper towels. The bath tissue was really poor, so plan on buying your own. The place is really cheap to rent, and you get what you pay for. The security however, is great.Recommended for: Age 55+.
Owner response: Thank you for your giving me the chance to respond to your review. I have been here for two months and have had a chance to address all of the issues. First and foremost, new mattresses have been purchased as well as new duvets and shams, all of very good quality. I have taken the opportunity to upgrade the decor, with new fridge and stove in stainless steel and new covers for all the furniture cushions. The place looks very elegant! There are two separate bathrooms, one with a tub, one with shower only. Both are quite adequate and pretty - Mexican tile is cheerful. The gardener is doing a good job with the terrace. It is a pleasant place to sit and is very tranquil and private. You will be provided with a basic "starter kit" of things like soap and TP, etc. You will need to get things like plastic wrap and napkins and you can find a range of quality in the local supermarkets. Thank you for your honest feedback. I hope you will consider a repeat visit!

I really appreciated the privacy and security the Santuary offered. Behind the gate was a cool and refreshing courtyard garden atmosphere in a semi-circle, 3 stories high; with private terraces for each condo. The condo you are inquiring about was one of the nicest places I've ever stayed and as a musician, I travel extensively through Canada, the US and Mexico. The architecture was powerful with the arched entrance to the very large bedroom which can be closed off with curtains or doors. There is a huge walk-in closet and small master bathroom as well as a bathroom and shower off the kitchen. In my opinion the furnishings were extremely well chosen to match the feeling of the space--they lend a very high end touch--off white with dark wood. There are windows all along the wall that face the terrace, looking out from the kitchen and dining room area as well as the wall that faces the old courtyard gardens behind the cul de sac of Privada de Animas looking out from the living room and bedroom. The windows on these two adjacent walls gives one the feeling of being surrounded by nature as there are large trees as well as gardens which adds to the feeling of spaciousness and gives an unusual amount of light for a Mexican dwelling. The same light coloured tile with a simple floral design is used in the bathrooms and the kitchen which is well stocked for any cooking needs. I met the owner who comes as often as she can. You can tell this living space is loved and well-cared for.Recommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway, girls getaway.

Owner info
Year Purchased: 2005
About the owner: I am a graphic designer who was been coming to San Miguel since 1996. I enjoy participating in painting workshops. I also enjoy the charm of the town, the sunny weather and the fact that you get fit by walking everywhere!
Why the Owner Chose Centro Historico:
I had 3 main considerations for a property here. It had to be centrally located, I had to feel safe, and it had to be quiet for sleeping. This condo is one of 6 in a gated complex at the end of a family oriented small street where everyone knows each other. The complex is very private and secure, and yet each individual unit is visually private from the others.
Everythng is within easy access of the apartment via walking. Taxis are inexpensive and useful for shopping or at night. They are everywhere.
The condo is tucked away, and is beautifully quiet and safe at night.
The Unique Benefits at this Condo:
You will enjoy the tranquil, light, and airy ambiance and tasteful decor. After coffee on the terrace, practice your Spanish with the charming white haired grandfather on the street, have breakfast at an organic market restaurant nearby and head out for language, art, or tennis classes. After lunch, return to the apartment for a siesta,
and your choice of doing absolutely nothing, or taking advantage of the vasr array of activities that the centro area of San Miguel has to offer.
