What a view!

We arrived late at night, in the dark, and awoke to the most amazing view. Coming from the East, it was quite a thrill to be able to see forever. We had a great time, just hanging out at the cabin, but also made day trips to Dubois and the Shoshone National Forest. Dubois is great place to get a feel for the West. We went to the Friday night rodeo and had a blast. The cabin is very well stocked with dishes, blankets, firewood (which might want to use, even in August), towels, etc - everything you need, except the food. If you stock up with groceries before arriving you could be very happy just staying at the cabin and relaxing. Or you can make day trips to see the wonderful sights. My family of five gave me thumbs up on this place, and I can strongly recommend it.

Stayed with a group of nine - four adults, nine kids. Plenty of room. The home is unique, spacious, well equipped. We grilled and cooked in, played games, enjoyed the amazing views and scouted the area for wildlife. The drive to the house is challenging, but the pay off was worth it. Actually had a deer lead us in on our drive up the mountain! Used it as a base for trips to Grand Tetons Na. Park and Yellowstone - they were a little further than we expected. Really enjoyed the Hatchet resort on the way to and from - excellent food.

Owner response:Of course all adults are "kids at heart". This party totalled nine individuals. Glad to have helped the two arms of this family-from two widely separated states and region--to embrace each other and what Mountain Shangri-La has to offer.

Getting Away From it All!

We really enjoyed our stay at Frank's mountain cabin. There was everything we might need plus such generous things that Frank was willing to share like binoculars, bear bells, drinkable water, etc. The cabin is well appointed for a family stay and it is very comfortable and beautiful. We had nine in our group and we had plenty of room without being on top of one another. The drive up the pass is breath taking and heart stopping at times. A deer escorted us along one of the roads. We know there is much to explore on the property but mostly used the home as a base for travel within Grand Tetons and Yellowstone. It was a pleasure to experience a home that is so obviously treasured by its owner. Frank is very helpful and friendly, even mailing some clothes back to me that I had forgotten in a drawer (that wouldn't happen in a hotel). Thanks for your hospitality and such a wonderful opening to our first (of many, hopefully!) Wyoming mountain experience.

Owner response:The shorts didn't fit--I had to send them back to her. Guests appreciate the thoughtful amenities and recreational options available in and near the cabin. As for service, I don't charge for courtesy. You'll receive prompt, helpful attention to your questions and needs when you're a guest at Mountain Shangri-La.

Home away from home

Our 2 families found Mountain Shangri-La to be very comfortable, clean, and pleasant. The view from on top of our mountain to the valley and mountains beyond was even more breath-taking than the photos on the website. The Crooked Creek Ranch, where we rented a few ATVs for an afternoon in the National Forest, was easy to get to. The cabin quickly came to feel like a home. Even when it was time to go we felt as though we would return soon. The owner very helpfully answered all our questions before arriving and while we were there. Thank you for helping us enjoy the beauty of Wyoming!

No need to continue searching. After exploring the amazing landscapes of the Dubois, Jackson Hole/Teton, and Yellowstone regions I have to say that the best part of the day was often the return to the Shangri-La. The cabin view rivals any we experienced in the area with the lush, wet valley floor and river basin transitioning to red rock canyon like structures and truly breath taking snow capped mountains. Each time we took the turn from the main road to begin the 6 mile or so accent to the cabin we came upon an amazing variety of wildlife including a heard of Elk, moose, and dozens of mule deer. The cabin was spacious and rustic - perfect for a reunion of 6 elementary school friends on the verge of turning 40. Frank was a pleasure to deal with and the price of our one week stay was an absolute steal when taking into account the location and amenities. I would not consider staying anywhere else on subsequent trips to the Yellowstone region.

Perfect Vacation

I have to say one of our best adventures ever! Frank provided everything we needed and then some. Our days were filled with animal excitement and our nights were spent in cozy comfort by the fire. We had dear and elk visit in our front yard every day, and even ran across a baby elk. The marmot colony in the front yard is very entertaining. The cabin is the perfect retreat to "get away from it all". if you want to see real wildlife upclose, this is the place for you!!!! We look forward to returning again in the future.

Owner response:Cheryl and Doug were great folks to meet and helped me to plan the road maintenance work that this year's wild wet spring required during their stay. It's always the greatest pleasure to meet guests who come from distant lands (Florida) and who enjoy the unique experiences and setting this wonderful place provides.

Just an incredible place...with a view like sitting on top of the world. Home is very comfortable and well equipped. Great location at the end of the road...literally. Sawmill Restaurant 10 minutes away, a great treat. Frank couldn't have been more accomodating and we look forward to a return visit.

A spectacular location. The view is amazing, the solitude is a welcome respite from all the hustle and bustle of daily life, and the property is spectacular. Much to explore. . . abundant wildflowers, interesting trails, entertaining marmots and a terrific swing in the yard. Frank leaves all information and is an extremely helpful homeowner so all of your questions are answered making for a seamless stay. The views of the Absarokas is spectacular and the millions of stars visible will take your breath away as will the Milky Way. Wow! Would love to have a screened porch to enjoy it on buggy nights (possibility?) Truly a shangri-la!

My son and I stayed at Mountain Shangri-La for 6 days in August 2009. It was perfect. The cabin is beautifully situated, all on it's own, at the end of a good gravel road, at over 8500 feet with a positively spectacular panoramic view of Du Noir valley and the Absaroka Mountain Range. The cabin is equipped and furnished with everything including a helpful binder with all necessary instructions and guidance -- and the place is very comfortable. We used Mountain Shangri-la as a base from which we did a series of day hikes in some of the vast and stunning wilderness areas in the vicinity -- in our case mainly Ftizpatrick Wilderness in the Wind River Range. We also popped-over to Yellowstone one day. All very accessible. All-in-all we were delighted to have found this gem. It was perfect for what we were after -- hours of exercise trooping through pristine wilderness followed by hours of deep sleep in a comfortable cabin on the side of a mountain. Frank Symington, the owner, was extremely efficient and professional and a pleasure to work with. We can highly recommend this idyllic spot.

We stayed here for several days and had the best time. The view is beautiful and the house was perfect and roomy and had everything in it you could ask for and more. It was so relaxing. Frank is an added bonus. He is so helpful. We want to go back and stay longer. Great hikes from the house and Quad rentals and plenty of roaming room all around. Breath taking. Thank you so much, Frank

Owner response:It's great when guests find something special, as so many do, when they visit Mountain Shangri-La. It's a pleasure whenever folks decide to return again and again.

Mountain Shangri-La fit the bill perfectly from morning coffee gazing across the Wind River valley to the snow capped mountains beyond to watching the stars pop out at night. Location provided excellent access to Yellowstone, the Grand Tetons, Dubois, and the Wind River Indiana Reservation among other points of interest. MSL accommodations were comfortable for the 8 of us and a wonderful and memorable time was had by all.

We spent a week here at this cabin and it was a Great experience!! We were provided with everything we needed and the cabin was spacious and very nice. We had 9 people there and we all had room!! It is in a place where you are out in the woods but to far away from Dubois or Jackson. I would recommend this cabin to anyone who wants family time or to just relax!! We can't wait to go back!!!!

We rented Shangri-la for a family reunion of eight and had a wonderful time. The views are stunning and the place feels secluded while still being near necessities in Dubois. The place is in great shape, and I can't imagine a better place to simply sit and watch hummingbirds on an August day then to view the Perseid meteor showers at night.

Owner response:I love it when guests "connect" with the experience Mountain Shangri-La offers. And those meteor showers are easily rinsed with the Big Dipper you'll find nearby.

I didn't actually stay here but I checked it out in detail. Frank was great to work with. He went above and beyond the call to make sure I had the information I was looking for. In the end it was the price of gas that made me look for something closer to home. If gas ever becomes afordable again I'll certainly book a stay just based on the customer service received. Thanks!

Stunning! We enjoyed the beauty of the Shoshone and Wind River. Love the company of the real people in Dubois. We have stayed in a couple of places in Dubois, and the Shangri-La provided excellent comfort, beautiful views, and beyond exceptional help/advise from the owner and agent. Suggest walking all four corners of the property. The view of the badlands is my favorite... laura young, sarasota, florida

What a wonderful place to spend a few relaxing days! Some of our party's comments included: "It just doesn't get any better than this" "This is heaven on Earth" "What a peaceful way to start the day" Even the drive to/from Yellowstone was a scenic pleasure. Thanks so much. Hopefully we can make it up to Wyoming again, where we would definitely stay at the 'Mountain Shangri La' again!

The views literally took my breath away. The front of the cabin contains a large, continuous window that maximizes the view from the living room. The cabin was very comfortable and convenient for day trips. We enjoyed lots of walking trails near the cabin. We plan on returning again.
