Called the Croghan Lodge, this secluded cottage with its own entrance, is within the well known Birr Castle Demesne, a garden of world-class importance. Also in the grounds is Ireland's Historic Science Centre, with galleries centred on the achievements of the scientific Parsons Family, Earls of Rosse, and the massive telescope built by the third Earl in 1847.
The small maket town of Birr has restaurants, many pubs, and other entertainment in summer. The area is close to the Slieve Bloom Hills, great for walking and cycling, and only a 20 minute drive from the Shannon for windsurfing and boating. Fishing is available and horseback riding. Central location also makes it a good base for touring Ireland, (you can rent a car through your airline) - Dublin, Kilkenny, Limerick, and Galway, all can be reached within two hours. |
