Owner's Profile

Owner Description

Year Purchased: 2004

We (Lindsay and Guy Butters) are freelance business consultants who left more 'normal' careers in London to live our lives differently. We are based at Mas des Grand' Terres in our own apartment in the converted hayloft, where we spend way too much time staring at computer screens!

However, we are there to help. We keep the place clean and tidy, and look after the pool and gardens. We can help with your queries concerning anything from lost luggage and onward travel arrangements, to booking restaurants and answering questions about local customs and history.

We can also help you to select wines from our small local wine list, send you out wine tasting and exploring with our self-guided wine tasting guides, or cook an evening meal for you every now and then.

We do not wish to be 'in your face' throughout your stay and do our best to balance discretion and availability.

Why the Owner Chose Avignon

This area is so well placed. It's close to several airports and the Avignon TGV station. In 3 hours or less, we can be in Paris, London, the Alps, Spain, or Italy!

We are both French speakers and have grown to love Provence during our travels in France.

The Unique Benefits of this Farmhouse

The weather is fantastic, the local food is great and Mas des Grand Terres is the kind of place where it is impossible not to relax.

Absolutely fabulous base of operations for a Provence vacation!

We stayed with Guy and Lindsay for a week, and left feeling as though our stay was far too short! The location was perfect for us - very close to Avignon and Aix, yet a perfect isolated setting in which to unwind with a bottle of wine and some bread and cheese after a hard days' touring and wine tasting.... Having English-speaking hosts made getting recommendations, directions, and answers to general questions both easy and quick, and they somehow figured out our likes and dislikes before we did, because every tip was perfect! The farmhouse was rustic but with modern touches in all the right places (read: bathrooms with showers, full kitchen, and working wireless!) - we were as comfortable there as we might have been in any fancy hotel room, but had (in addition) a private swimming pool, ping pong, bocce, a couple of acres of gardens in which to relax (and gather vegetables for supper), and two engaging on-site hosts who played the part of our private concierges to perfection! As for activities, we made day trips to Avignon, Pont-du-Gard, Chateau-Neuf-de-Pape, and many other small villages in the region - the location just below Avignon is one I would recommend to anyone with a limited timeframe trying to get a good feel for the ambiance of Provence. We were even able to combine a day trip to Aix with dinner in Cassis (on the Mediterranean) - I strongly recommend the drive along the coast called "Route des Cretes" near Cassis, where the scenery was just unbelievable.... Another plus for those athletically inclined: one of our party is a serious cyclist, and successfully made the trip up to the top of Mont Ventoux (think Tour de France); the starting point for the climb is a pleasant short drive from the property, but some serious advance training is needed before getting on the bike for the trip up! All in all, staying at Guy and Lindsay's beautiful property greatly enhanced our visit to Provence - we all wished we could have stayed longer! I can recommend their property without reservation - a great place to use as a base for your trip to Provence!

Nothing but praise for Le Mas des Grand' Terres!

Guest: Dom (San Francisco, CA, USA)
Date of Stay: 05/07/11 Review Submitted: 07/06/11

Almost two months have passed since we stayed at Le Mas des Grand' Terres, and we have nothing but wonderful memories of the terrific week that we spent there in early May. For those of you considering booking this gîte, a few details on what we were looking for when we booked. We wanted a place that would accommodate four adult couples and a baby, with ensuite bathrooms for all rooms (most in our party were US-based!). The group included both sets of my wife’s and my in-laws, so we wanted a place with a garden large enough to relax in, and also close enough to shops, etc that people could wander around without being dependent on cars. Well if that’s anything like what you’re looking for then Le Mas des Grand' Terres has it in spades! It’s a beautiful spot that delivers an idyllic Provençale experience with enough creature comforts to allow guests to feel pampered. The house is tastefully furnished in the style of the region: the walls are whitewashed, the antique couches sag, and the curtains billow in the light Mistrale breeze. The light wakes you…whenever…you wander downstairs to see if anyone made coffee, or picked up the fresh bread for breakfast. And getting fresh breakfast – or any other meal for that matter – entails only a brief walk (5-10 mins depending on motivation/footware) to the nearby town of Rognonas. There you’ll find several Boulangeries to choose from, as well as a couple of great restaurants and enough shops to satisfy most needs. Tourism from the house is easy too – Avignon is a 15 minute drive away, The Roman remains of Nimes and Pont Du Gard, and the delightful Châteauneuf-du-Pape are all less than an hour away. But despite the attractions, you’ll want to spend time in the house and its wonderful garden. Our dinners took place in the charming dining area outside the house, which seats 10 in comfort. There’s a traditional charcoal grill next to the table that you just have to cook on if cooking is your thing. And given the abundance of incredible produce available from the markets nearby you won’t run short of dishes to cook. its Why go out? We researched gîtes in the area extensively before booking, yet we still feel like we lucked out. We’d have taken great garden or location, but here we got both. Guy and Lindsay are charming hosts, and they can cook too, as Guy did on our last evening at the house. We sat and we ate and drank until late chatting about what a great week we’d spent at Le Mas des Grand' Terres!

Our Wonderful Vacation in Provence

Guest: Curt (Ohio)
Date of Stay: 07/10/10 Review Submitted: 11/27/10

What a wonderful experience! Guy and Lindsay were fantastic hosts, always discrete and laid-back while exceptionally helpful with suggestions on sightseeing, attractions, restaurants, wine, village markets, itineraries, and understanding the local culture. The farmhouse (Mas des Grand' Terres ) was exactly as described and perfect for our group of eight family members from diverse locations who met for a week in Provence. The house is quite comfortable and charming with four large bedrooms (each with en-suite bath), spacious grounds, beautiful garden, a large inviting pool, and nice-to-have extras like Wi-Fi and a washing machine. Upon our arrival, Guy and Lindsay provided complete information on how everything worked, an initial stock of basic food with fantastic local wines, and dinner reservations (at our request) at a wonderful restaurant in Rognonas. The house is perfectly situated geographically for exploring Provence, with easy access in all directions. Only about an hour from the Marseille airport, day trips are very easy to Pont-du-Gard, Avignon, St Rémy, Les Baux, Arles, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Gordes, Roussaillon, and more. A daily challenge was whether to stay and relax at the mas or set out to see the beautiful sights of Provence. We highly recommend this property, and would most definitely return next time travels take us to Provence.

A Fabulous Week in Provence

Guest: Carol (Coquitlam, British Columbia, Canada)
Date of Stay: 05/22/10 Review Submitted: 07/28/10

My husband and I with three other couples spent a very enjoyable week at this beautiful farmhouse in May. It is not a fancy 5 * accomodation but a very comfortable, clean, homey place to stay. The four bedrooms are very nice and all have their own bathroom which is great. The kitchen is not fancy but perfect for making your meals and has a nice large eating area. The barbeque and area around is fabulous. We barbequed and spent the evenings sitting outside. The grounds and pool are beautiful and well maintained although we were busy sight seeing and didn't get as much time to enjoy the grounds as we would have like to. The hosts, Guy and Lindsay are fantastic!! They were a wealth of knowledge and were able to direct us all over the area sight seeing. The location of the farmhouse was great for exploring the beautiful countryside.(you do need your own transportation) They took time to visit with us when we asked them but otherwise they were out of sight. For a very reasonable fee they will make a meal for you. We absolutely loved our meal!! They treated us like royalty! Our holiday was wonderful partly due to Guy and Lindsay's hospitality and we would love to return in the future.

Excellent value: wonderful hosts, great accomodation and perfect location

Guest: Natalie (Canada)
Date of Stay: 06/11/10 Review Submitted: 07/08/10

My family spent a week here in June 2010. Lindsay and Guy are generous, helpful and knowledgable hosts. They know and love the area well and took the time to provide us with the details that made our trip exceptional. We enjoyed the huge gardens and pool at the end of our long days of sightseeing and took Lindsay up on her offer to use their fresh veggies and the wonderful herbs to add to our french cooking experience and dining on the terrace. The house is spacious, very clean, super well maintained, quiet and very well equipped....even wireless internet. The location is accurate and was excellent for us as we visited the Cote de Rhone to the north, the roman ruins at Pont Gard and Nimes to the west, St- Remy, Baux and Arles to the South and the Luberon villages to the east. The photos just can't capture the wonderful experience of this place. I have stayed in many vacation rentals and this was the best value by far. I highly recommend it....reserve early as they book up fast. PS: if you are renting a car, the GPS option is incredibly helpful. Save the rental location before you leave the parking and then save the house location when you arrive... it was easy to find with Guy's detailed directions. Then, no matter where you end up during the day, you can select the saved location and find your way back home from anywhere and return to the car rental at the end of your trip without issue. Worth every penny.
