Location: Sarlat-la-Canéda, Aquitaine, France, Europe (Centre of Sarlat 1 hour from Bergerac, 2 hours from Toulouse)
Accommodations: House, 2 Bedrooms, 1 Bath (Sleeps 2)
La Bouquerie is a small gem of a house hidden in a quiet corner of mediaeval Sarlat. The house has been totally renovated and decorated to a very high standard, and features a living/dining room with exposed stone walls and beamed ceiling, tile floor and a traditional stone dry sink carved into the wall. The large kitchen has custom-made chestnut cabinets, hand-made Provençal blue and white tile counters, and top-of-the-line appliances. The upper level has a solid chestnut floor, with skylights and exposed beams, washed in a white stain. Both bedroom and den have French doors looking out onto tiny balconies. A small cobbled courtyard is perfect for coffee and croissants, or foie gras and a glass of wine.
Just around the corner are a baker shop and newspaper shop, while only two minutes away are the many cafés, restaurants, shops, and of course the historic sites of Sarlat's old town. After a day wandering through the lanes of Sarlat, shopping and tasting, or visiting the many other wonderful villages in the Dordogne, you can relax with an apéritif in your courtyard - while La Bouquerie is in the centre of town, it is totally private. There is ample public parking nearby, and the house itself has a private, locked parking space a few minutes away. La Bouquerie is not suitable for children.
Sarlat is one of the most fascinating and beautifully restored towns in France, giving the atmosphere and appearance of another age, with narrow steep alleys flanked by medieval and Renaissance houses in honey-coloured stone. It has more historic, listed buildings than any other place of its size in France, and is the only town to be given three stars by the Michelin guides solely for the quality and ambience of its old town. It has one of the biggest weekly markets in France, which takes over most of the town every Saturday. On Summer evenings you can stroll through the old town, enjoying various 'animations' such as mimes and musicians, by the gaslight lamps. All Summer there are wonderful music festivals in nearby towns, while Sarlat has an open-air theatre festival in the market square in late July, and an international film festival in October.
The Dordogne - or Périgord - region is one of the most beautiful parts of France, and is well known to the French for its food and wine, leading Carlux - Le Pontetto the saying - "En Périgord, on mange bien, on boit bien." As the home of truffles and foie gras, it is an area where you can eat extremely well in countless excellent and inexpensive restaurants. Just east of Bordeaux, it is also noted for its own vineyards, producing Bergerac, Pécharmant, and Monbazillac. For the days you wish to relax at home, local markets provide treats such as strawberries, asparagus, walnut cake, olives and cheese.
Legend has it that God, passing through the region with a sack full of châteaux, slipped on the hills of the Fishing boats Dordogne, and châteaux poured out over the countryside. In fact, during the Hundred Years' War, England and France built 1001 châteaux up and down the river. Today, from villages classified as among the most beautiful in France, mediaeval fortresses such as Beynac and Castelnaud face each other, while Renaissance châteaux nestle in the hills.

Our two weeks at La Bouquerie were so special for Susan and me, certainly the peak memory of our time in France. And I don't mean Sarlat (which was special enough in its own right) -- I mean the two weeks at La Bouquerie itself. So picturesque. So comfortable. So accessible. I remember cooking almost every day in that lovely, well stocked kitchen, often using provisions from the Sarlat market and often using recipes from the kitchen's cookbooks. The highlight was a Salade Niçoise made with fresh tuna grilled on the bbq, greens from the market and a homemade vinagrette. You know, there was nowhere else we stayed in France where that would have been possible. It was La Bouquerie that allowed us to contemplate that dinner -- a wonderful cap to a wonderful day.

I wanted to write and say how much we are enjoying your house. This is the eighth house we have rented in France. Without a question this is the nicest, cleanest, best located, best kitchen, best bathrooms, and most nicely furnished. Furthermore most rented houses seem to start the visitor with 1 roll of toilet paper and directions on where to buy more. It is so nice to find the necessary paper products, kitchen cleaning supplies, and the basic kitchen ingredients such as salt, pepper and even coffee in the house when one arrives. What a pleasant surprise. After a hard day's travel, the welcoming bottle of wine was greatly appreciated and opened almost immediately. RN and LM, Charleston, SC Between the two of us we have rented many houses in various countries over the years, but we both agree that this has been one of the best! Everything is here for the ardent chefs we are, and although the beautiful town is so close, the house is quiet and cool. B and C C. Cambridge and London, UK. What a delight to stay in such a sensitively restored home! And what a staircase – an outstanding example of craftsmanship in wood. AM and MR, Bath, England. We could not imagine any other place being so ideal. Didn’t see or do half of what we planned, but still loved every moment. Three weeks vacations just isn’t enough. Hope to return. J and S. C. Gig Harbor, Washington. To our hosts, many bouquets. Our gratitude to you for your creative architecture, and design – especially the kitchen and the courtyard. We so appreciated how you anticipated our needs. TW and MM. Halifax, Canada
