Location: Homer, Kenai Peninsula, Alaska, USA (Thirty Minutes South of Homer By Water Taxi, MacDonald Spit)
Accommodations: Cabin, 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed(s) (Sleeps 4-6)
Keywords: quiet, sun-catcher with broad decks and lots of beaches
This large, three room cabin is located on the inner corner of MacDonald Spit where the main body of the Spit joins the dogleg. The Spit is three-quarter miles long, and the road at the base goes to the village of Seldovia (nine miles southwest) or into the foothills of the Chugach Mountains to the southeast. This part of the road courses gradually uphill, and up to the plateau where there is a view of the Gulf of Alaska.
Five acres of land surround the cabin with nearly one thousand feet of inside and outside beach. It is on Kasitisna Bay facing the Chugach Mountains to the east, and on the outside beach there is an unobstructed view across Kachemak Bay and Cook Inlet to the Alaska Range and Mount Iliamna to the west.
The building consists if a living room 12 feet by 22 feet with entry closet and woodburning stove, table, chairs and two single beds with view windows on three sides. The kitchen, 12 by 12 has a refrigerator, propane stove, sink with collection water and a table and chairs, with windows on both sides. The bedroom is 12 by 16 with a double bed platform and mattress, dresser, table, and windows on three sides. Sleeping bags need to be brought by renters. There is no running water, toilet facilities are in a separate outbuilding. It is camping in comfort.
The cabin has large decks on two sides of almost one thousand square feet. There are currants, strawberries, and watermelon berries near the paths in season. A large bald eagle nest is visible just north of the cabin and there are lots of eagles in the area, as well as sea otters and, of course, lots of fish for surf casting. Dolly Varden trout and a variety of salmon are in these waters. There is also easy clam digging near the base of the Spit.
Kayaking can be arranged on these protected waters, and biking is done on the Jakolof Bay road at the base of the Spit. Equipment is available through the water taxi operators. This cabin is located in a quiet sun-catching corner that is ideal for a relaxing get-away. Campfires can be built on either the inside or outside beaches and there's lots of driftwood.

Owner's Profile
Owner Description
This is a beautiful area with mountains all around, snow capped most of the year. Yet the sun is warm, into the 80's on many summer days on the decks. Bald eagles are nesting and flying around the entire tip of the Spit and in the trees near the cabin.
Surf casting for Dolly Varden trout is good on the outside beach. Salmon and halibut charter boats are readily available either in Seldovia or Homer. Oysters are cultured in nearby Jakolof Bay, directly behind me in the picture. And they are fabulous. Clams can be dug at low tide on the bar in front of the cabin or at the base of the Spit...steamers, butter clams and the occasional geoduck are in abundance.
Why the Owner Chose Homer
As many of our guests have said this is just a perfect corner of the world to relax and enjoy the beauty and quiet of the outdoors In fact, some of our kids and grand kids stay here in this cabin every year...thus the hi speed internet connection for occasional business calls. The outside beach is very fine sand and ideal for bonfires: some go on into the late hours with lots of guitar playing and singing, and without neighbors nearby it works out very well. Besides, it doesn't get super dark at nite so you can see the hotdogs and marshmallows any time.
The Unique Benefits of this Cabin
A hike down to the base of the Spit is about three quarters of a mile. At the Base is the road into Seldovia, which is nine miles away. There is cab service, sort of, from Seldovia, or sometimes rental bicycles can be arranged, but it's a tough pedal up and down the hills to Seldovia. It is also a nice hike going back up into the foothills along Jakalof Bay where you can see the lines and "pots" of the oyster farms in Jakolof.

We really loved our stay on MacDonald Spit--although the weather was a bit cold and wet, the cabin kept us warm and dry. We were fortunate to see humpback whales, seals, otters, and eagles. This is truly a magnificent location and we hope to return next year. Thanks!

We so thoroughly loved the cabin and the weather was great. I did some artwork while I was there and we went fishing with our family from Homer and also some boating to Jakolof Bay and Sadie Cove and points beyond. Just beautiful. You have quite a spot there and maybe we can come back again. The wildlife and birds are fabulous....thanks for sharing your little Shangrila!

We very much enjoyed our stayat the MacDonald Spit cabin, although very rustic, it was warm and comfortable. Lots of games and books for the kids to enjoy as well as adults. There's a large deck to sit and watch the birds or just relax. During our stay we enjoyed fishing along the beach in back of the cbin, berry picking, and one day we went to Seldovia and went kayaking. It was a great weekend, and know we'll be going back.
