This large, three room cabin is located on the inner corner of MacDonald Spit where the main body of the Spit joins the dogleg. The Spit is three-quarter miles long, and the road at the base goes to the village of Seldovia (nine miles southwest) or into the foothills of the Chugach Mountains to the southeast. This part of the road courses gradually uphill, and up to the plateau where there is a view of the Gulf of Alaska.
Five acres of land surround the cabin with nearly one thousand feet of inside and outside beach. It is on Kasitisna Bay facing the Chugach Mountains to the east, and on the outside beach there is an unobstructed view across Kachemak Bay and Cook Inlet to the Alaska Range and Mount Iliamna to the west.
The building consists if a living room 12 feet by 22 feet with entry closet and woodburning stove, table, chairs and two single beds with view windows on three sides. The kitchen, 12 by 12 has a refrigerator, propane stove, sink with collection water and a table and chairs, with windows on both sides. The bedroom is 12 by 16 with a double bed platform and mattress, dresser, table, and windows on three sides. Sleeping bags need to be brought by renters. There is no running water, toilet facilities are in a separate outbuilding. It is camping in comfort. The cabin has large decks on two sides of almost one thousand square feet. There are currants, strawberries, and watermelon berries near the paths in season. A large bald eagle nest is visible just north of the cabin and there are lots of eagles in the area, as well as sea otters and, of course, lots of fish for surf casting. Dolly Varden trout and a variety of salmon are in these waters. There is also easy clam digging near the base of the Spit.
Kayaking can be arranged on these protected waters, and biking is done on the Jakolof Bay road at the base of the Spit. Equipment is available through the water taxi operators. This cabin is located in a quiet sun-catching corner that is ideal for a relaxing get-away. Campfires can be built on either the inside or outside beaches and there's lots of driftwood. |
