St. Simons Island, Georgia: Coastal Marshlands and Historic Lighthouses
The largest of Georgia’s famed “Golden Isles,” St. Simons Island has raked in some impressive awards in recent years: AOL Travel named it 1 of America’s 10 Best Islands for its picturesque, marshland setting; Budget Travel cited its historical landmarks and white-sand beaches in its list of the country’s 10 best winter beach retreats; and in 2010, Condé Nast Traveler’s Readers’ Choice Awards ranked the 18-square-mile hideaway the fifth-best island in the United States.
Despite these accolades, St. Simons Island remains a quiet vacation destination, one where seafood shacks and Mediterranean mansions share the same oceanfront avenue.
St. Simons is dotted with verdant marshlands, maritime forests, and scenic waterways. An extensive network of scenic biking trails cut through the countryside and fishing charters and shrimp boats offer excursions year-round. You’ll get a different view of the island from the top of St. Simons Lighthouse. Built in 1872, this Victorian-style tower stands 104 feet tall and features exhibits relating to Coast Guard history.
Year Purchased: 2001
About: We are Georgia natives from the Atlanta area who fell in love with the friendly folks and peaceful afternoon sunsets that we found in St. Simons. After years of visiting the island, we finally made our dream come true when we purchased our very own 'home away from home' just a short walk to the beach. As a designer, Laura has revelled in making our beach getaway a true home with a special space for everyone: ideal for little ones at play, teenagers who love sleeping late, moms (or dads) looking for a quiet reading nook, and of course families who enjoy entertaining friends and family. The open floor plan with bright, cheerful colors and bleached hardwood floors makes getting together with our growing family and playing games or cooking fabulous seafood dishes together, fun and relaxing.
We particularly enjoy the natural beauty of the Golden Isles: Carefully protected from over-development, the waterways of SSI and all the Golden Isles are full of natural beauty and our family loves to hike the wildlife refuges on the island, go kayaking or fishing, or even take in a day trip to Cumberland to see the wild horses, or visit Jekyl's 'Driftwood beach.' As an active family, we appreciate the great bike trails everywhere, which make exploring the entire island (safely away from traffic) with family a truly memorable pleasure.
We feel very blessed that we found this heavenly place here in beautiful St. Simons-The best kept secret in the South!
Why Ocean Walk: After visiting the island for years, we knew we wanted to be in the historic village area of the island and were delighted to discover a home within with the beauty of the Ocean Walk community- with it's fountained lake and marvelous landscaping. We were particularly delighted to find that a home so close to the front outdoor pool and that it was heated in the winter (quite unusual in St. Simons!)- so ideal for our young family. Even better, we found a downstairs unit with NO STAIRS to deal with daily. We especially loved the location of Ocean Walk-in the Historic Village area (the old lighthouse and fishing pier are at the end of our street!) and yet just a short walk to the beach. We often enjoy a walk (or ride your bike) to dinner in the village at one of SSI's fabulous restaurants, then feast on an ice cream while strolling the pier and walk home again...all without stepping in your car! (I like to tell myself that I have 'walked off' the ice cream!) Also, my husband and I love to wake early, sneak out and walk down the street to the beach to enjoy the glorious sunrise, tidal pools and quiet natural wide expanse of beach with it's shorebirds and seashells in the mornings. Our downstairs unit with walkout patio means NO steps to climb either inside or outside and easy access off the living room to the covered patio and grassy backyard for grilling or lazing on the porch swing. OceanWalk provides unparalled amenities on the island: 2 pools, Tennis, Fitness Center, Playground, Fountained pond, etc all in a beautifully landscaped and maintained enclave, and we really love that we are just steps from the larger of the two pools: an outdoor heated pool- for those cooler winter months or early spring days.
The Unique Benefits at this Villa: What We Find Unique: Unlike so many overdeveloped, crowded destinations, SSI retains a small town charm, and the friendly local folks are always ready with a smile and helpful advice. Rarely do you find a place on the coast, which boasts such a variety of things to do- besides simply beachcombing or sunbathing. This area is rich in history and even if you are not a history buff, a visit to the north side of the island to see Christ Church with it's old cemetary and beautiful stained glass, or an afternoon exploring the ruins of the Fort are fun for kids of all ages! Visit old plantations and tabby slave cabins on the island, and trolley tours and ghost walks really bring the past to life. In addition, with it's unique natural marine life, and natural unspoiled beauty, SSI offers dozens of outdoor activities such as kayaking, windsurfing, biking or hiking a wildlife refuge. Local laws protect SSI from the overdevelopment of so many other coastal towns, and you'll feel the quaint, picturesque charm of the island, without all the traffic and noise, high rise bldgs/hotels and crowded sunbathers (who must pay a hotel for a chair to relax on the beach). We love to walk on the beach in early morning and enjoy the sunrise, sound of the waves, tidal pools, shorebirds and marine wildlife and often feel we have the beach to ourselves! Our teens love to sleep late in quiet comfort -without noise from slamming car doors or headlights coming through windows, and we love that we can enjoy a cup of coffee at our outdoor patio table or porch swing in relative privacy and quiet. Carefully protected by local govenment laws, SSI and the Golden Isles are full of wildlife of all kinds: Whales, Manatees, Sport fishing, birds of all varieties (many quite rare) and even wild horses on Cumberland Island. We especially love the bike trails, canopied with huge old oak trees dripping with Spanish moss.
