THE LAKEHOUSE

If you are looking for a classic mountain getaway, with a superb location in the Nantahala National Forest - on Lake Nantahala - this is your place! By 'classic' we mean it was built by our children's great-grandparents as a mountain vacation home and fishing base back in the '60s. It is NOT a million dollar McMansion thrown up a few years ago that will cost a fortune to rent. It's our family lakehouse. And, we're happy to rent it to you.

This vacation get-away is located on Lake Nantahala with direct access to a private dock and absolutely beautiful views of the lake and mountains. The lake can be enjoyed for swimming, fishing and boating. Many other outdoor activities are within arms reach of the property.

The location of the house on the lake is something special, a place where you can retreat to get away from the grind of normal life. It is a true escape, nestled away in a stand of enormous poplar trees with a view of the large lake area in front of the distant natural dam. The hours melt away as you settle into a life of mountain informality, fantastic natural surroundings and wonderful fellowship with family and friends.

The house was one of the first properties built on the lake, and has been maintained and updated with modern amenities. The two-level house is ideal for families and groups of friends. The upper (driveway) level has two bedrooms and one large sleeping area with a screened-off double bed, two single beds and a couch bed. The lower level features a family room with a wood burning fireplace, a large, well-equipped kitchen, and an outside patio facing the lake with a gas grill. It has all the character of a family mountain cabin, with added features like remodeled kitchen, washer/dryer, cable TV, and DVD/VCR.

There is a public boat landing nearby, within 5 minutes by car or a short 15 minute walk. A canoe is included along with paddles and personal floatation devices.

Lakefront House W/Dock on Nantahala Lake. Near Boat Landing.

Year Purchased: 1962

Why the Owner Chose Lake Nantahala

The house was built by our father and mother when there were only a few houses on the lake. The land it was built on was part of a large tract of land that our parents bought back when the Nantahala Lake was known to only a few local mountain folk. It has been in our family ever since.

To say that there are countless memories of visits and gatherings of family and friends is a huge understatement. We gather here during three seasons (it's a bit cold in the winter so it is generally closed then) and enjoy the wonderful scenery and all that mountain fresh air.

This house is a true treasure and was built by our father and other local mountain men. The stone steps to the lake were laid by a local mason. The trees, including two apple trees and a pear tree, were planted by our father. And to this day I tend to and add to our mother's wonderful selection of native plants that add different colors to the landscape throughout the year.

The Unique Benefits at this House

Nature, the lake, the fresh mountain air and communion with loved ones.

B
Lakes End Diner

Quaint diner with tasty burgers and other short order food. This is the only marina on the lake where you can fuel up boats directly on-water.

C
Public Boat Landing

Boat landing. Just around the corner from our Lakehouse, a short drive or brisk 15 minute walk.

D
Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest

Largest stand of old growth forest east of the Mississippi. A fantastic day trip from the Lakehouse with a great, family friendly 2 mile hiking trail that loops through part of the forest. These trees are BIG, like the size of redwoods you would see on the West Coast!

E
Wayah Bald Lookout

Fantastic panoramic views in all directions of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Good hiking trails. The Appalachian Trail crosses here.

G
Siler Bald

A great short hike from Wyah Road takes you up to Siler Bald. These 'balds' are a bit mysterious, since there is Indian legend as to why they occur (Cherokee say they are places made by the spirits so that eagles can catch rabbits). Regardless, they are great natural places to visit.

H
Tsali State Park

Great venue for mountain biking, horseback riding and hiking. Fantastic system of trails (about 40 miles of trails) that wind around Lake Fontana.

I

Owenby's General Store The only gas station on the lake (for cars) and some basic food supplies (eggs, milk, dried goods). A classic old mountain country store. Check out the hornets nest collection and the deer heads. There's a pool table that mostly is used by locals.

On our trip through the south of the USA, we stayed 4 nights at the Lake House. It is an amazing place: when you wake up you can dive into the lake and then enjoy a delicious breakfast with a beautiful view. The house is fully equipped and has a very relaxing atmosphere. An ideal place to get away from it all!

The Lake View is better than TV

My friends and I drove to beautiful Lake Nantahala, NC to stay at this classic summer cabin. In fact, the word Nantahala in Cherokee means “land of the noon day sun” as was evident during our stay. Driving down back roads, we saw anglers fishing for trout in the tributaries. Duke Power’s hydro pipes provide whitewater opportunities for kayakers and rafters when they release water during the day. Back at the cabin, there were plenty of things to do: mountain biking, swimming, hiking the Appalachian Trail, sun bathing, relaxing, or reading a book. It was the perfect place for the whole family (and our dogs) as we celebrated our friend’s birthday. Furthermore, the newly updated kitchen made it easy to prepare, cook, and serve delectable food. And the privacy made us feel like we had the lake to ourselves. Lastly, the photos of the lake look even more majestic when you visit. We cannot wait to come back.

I can't imagine a more perfect place to relax and enjoy nature. I have been coming to this area for years to enjoy the areas cycling and rafting opportunities. Lake Nantahala has to be one of the most beautiful places on earth and this house gives you the "lake cabin" feel that completes the experience.

The cabin and surrounding areas are exactly as described. What a fantastic getaway for all ages. The cabin was clean and user friendly. The large plate glass windows allowed for a picturesque view of the Nantahala lake every morning. This was truly an amazing vacation!!!

Incredible Views, Great Value

Guest: Jerry (Anderson, SC )

There are no better views available on Nantahala Lake. A perfect place to escape from civilization but enjoy civilized amenities. This is definitely an "old school" lake house with the bonus of a well stocked modern kitchen and dining area. Although I spent very little time inside the house, I found the furnishings to be comfortable and everything worked just as it should. If you are looking for 4 star luxury, you need to look elsewhere. If you are looking for comfort and relaxation at a great price, this is the place. I hope to bring my family up again soon.
