Perched above our olive groves and grape orchards, the accommodation at Podere Vallari provides panoramic views down the valley to the sea - even including a view of the famous island of Elba (where Napoleon was exiled).
This genuinely rustic setting is a perfect get-away from the hustle and bustle of the big cities, and yet, it is so centrally located that Pisa, Lucca, Elba, Cecina, Volterra, San Gimignano, Siena, and even the Chianti wine region are easy one-day trips. Montalcino and the less often explored southern part of Tuscany are also easily accessible. NOTE: Though Podere Vallari is located in the province of Pisa, it is approximately 50 km from the center of the city of Pisa. Guests will need a car to reach the farm, since there is no public transportation by bus or train to the property. Guests will also want to explore the neighboring hill towns of Tuscany, so having a car is highly recommended.
Podere Vallari offers the best of all possible worlds. Travel to some of the most beautiful towns in Tuscany, or just relax and take walks down country roads and visit one of the least known gems of this region - Riparbella, a wonderful small village with old world charm and two outstanding restaurants.
There are two apartments available in our guest house. The top floor apartment is beautifully furnished and has a full bath, kitchen, dining area, and balcony with a gorgeous view. The apartment features a large living/sleeping area which is perfect for stretching out and making oneself feel right at home. It also has air conditioning and electric heating and can thus be used throughout the year. The bottom floor apartment features a fireplace and a separate bedroom. It has neither air conditioning nor electric heating but it is very cool and shady in summer due to the abundance of vegetation around the house. In addition to a small terrace in front, there is a very nice spacious terrace facing southeast which has become the favourite outdoor "living room" of all our summer and aumtumn guests.
The owners are a German couple, agricultural engineers, who bought the property in 1981 and immediately started to transition to an organic farm. Guests are invited to visit the vineyards and olive groves, to try out the organic wine and olive oil and ask any questions they might have. The owners are both fluent in English. They live in a nearby house and take personal care of all the needs and interests of their guests.

Spending most of July in the studio apartment at the farm is a memory that will last a life time. From the quiet mornings watching the birds play in the air currents above the olive trees, evenings in Cecina (where all the locals meet and greet), driving to villages near and far (Volterra, Sienna, Bolgheri, etc) and having dinner parties on the grounds with the owners and Wwoofers or spending Sundays at the Mare (Med. Sea only about 8 US miles away) my stay in Riparbella, at the farm is more than I could have even imagined! This set-up is not for everyone, but if you are interested in meeting some quality people in a real Italian setting, then give this place a try. It became a home a way from home for me. Because this is a farm, and not a 4 star hotel, you should know that sometimes water for showers, dishes, etc wasn't available; although it was a relatively short time before the water made it self back up the hill to fill the reserve tank. For me, that was a nonissue.

We spent a delightful week at Podere Vallari. The owners were very helpful as we progressed through our selection of vacation locations, and the apartment was clean and well maintained. Our week was a series of day trips driving to local cities, towns and villages - Lucca, Voltarra, San Gimignano, Sienna. It provided a perfect place to operate from, and return at the end of the day for a quiet evening with a country walk, and beautiful views. Highly recommended.

My husband and I selected Podere Vallari as the destination for our first trip to Tuscany after seeing the location on the internet and emailing the Hadelichs. From our very first contact with them , we knew this trip would be a special one and we were not disappointed. We visited in November and opted for the downstairs apartment because it had a fireplace. We did look at the upstairs apartment and it was lovely, with a big private terrace overlooking the farms and olive groves. Both apartments had everything needed for comfort and convenience. Our stay wasboth relaxing and fun. Podere Vallari is a working organic farm with vineyards and olive trees. The olive harvest was underway and we were able to help pick as well as travel with Ursula to the mill to see the process of turning olives into olive oil. It was all quite an experience and taught us why good olive oil is not cheap! I love cooking and enjoyed going to the markets and sharing dinners with the Hadelichs and their WWOOF'ers who were helping with the harvest. These were 4 young people from different parts of the world--we had many cozy dinners and interesting conversations with everyone in our apartment before the fire, and others at the Hadelichs residence, which is next-door. The peaceful rustic surroundings, cats peeping in the door, wonderful food and wine and beautiful scenery made every day stand out. Our hosts were generous and attentive, but never intrusive. There were lots of choices for day-trips from the farm and we visited several of the ancient hill towns, spent a day in Pisa and took the train from Cecina to Florence for 2 days and a night. There was lots to do, but our favorite part was to relax at the farm---cooking, reading, taking walks--it was another world and better than any spa. I would recommend Podere Vallari to anyone who wants a special getaway to a quiet time and place from the past.

In May of 2009 we visited Podere Vallari for a week. We stayed in the upper apartment and had a wonderful experience. Ursula and Sigismunde were great hosts. The apartment was clean, warm and had all the amenities needed. Having a car is important but it is only a few hours drive from Firenze where we flew in to. The location was central and an easy day trip by car to towns like Siena, Pisa, Volterra, San Giminiano, and Riparbella. The closest town, Cecina, is minutes away and has a weekly farmer's market with a wide selction of fresh fish, pasta, cheeses and seasonal vegetables. Our kitchen was well equipped with all the amenities needed for a gourmet meal. In fact, we ended up hosting a few friends in the apartment for amazing meals. In the morning, we enjoyed brewing a fresh cup of coffee and sitting out on our terrace to enjoy a gorgeous view of the olive orchard and vineyard. The location is also 10 minutes away from the beach for those looking to enjoy the sea in the summer. We highly recommend Podere Valleri and hope to return in the near future.
