Pezenas house description
Breathtaking vaulted ceilings highlight this restored, 15th-century, village home. Chosen for its location in the heart of the Languedoc, this ample home (in a small village) puts you 20 minutes from the Mediterranean in one direction, an hour from Carcassonne in the other, with wine country in every direction.
We rent Friday to Friday so guests can go to the Saturday morning market in Pezenas to shop for food, an experience you'll remember forever: a half-dozen cheese vendors down from the mountains, fresh fish caught the night before, locally made sausages, mountains of fresh fruits and vegetables from the region, roasted chickens, paella ... and so much more. Scores of vendors line the main boulevard.
Picture-perfect Renaissance Pezenas (with its dozens of antique dealers and summer-long arts festival) is a few minutes away. Good food abounds. And the village itself makes excellent wine. This home is the perfect base for dozens of day trips and a memorable French holiday. The house has its own website where the daytrips are described in detail.

Year Purchased: 1999
About the owner: My father was French and a professor at Michigan State University. He and my mother took the entire family (6 kids!) to France many, many times. As an adult, I wanted that connection myself, so we took the plunge and bought a second home there.
Why the Owner Chose Pezenas:
The location is perfect, in our view. Being in the Languedoc, the area has a very different climate than our home in New England. In the summer, Valros is as hot and dry as Tucson! We love the convenience of excellent mountain hiking 45 minutes in one direction, with a swim in the Mediterranean only 20 minutes in the other direction. The neighboring town of Pézenas is a real find. It is one of Europe's larger antiquing centers. It has back-to-back art festivals throughout the summer. The old quarter is filled with very good local arts and crafts and looks like a move set. And there a dozen different outdoor cafés to relax at.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
We like to read in the sun. We like to shop in the huge Saturday market. We like to take a daily walk for an hour in the vineyards that start about one minute from our front door. And we very much enjoy the village life, whether it's our neighbor complaining about his rheumatism or a quick hop up to the square for a cup of coffee or a beer.
