DIANA ROSS, ZZ TOP, DEEP PURPLE, VANESSA PARADISE all in concert in the JULY Festival in Carcassonne!!!
Just a few steps from the famous Canal du Midi. In the heart of Cathar Country and the Minervois wine region!
Canal Cottage is a traditional grape pickers house situated in the heart of the old village of Trebes. The village is one of the ports along the Canal du Midi, a World Heritage site of 240km (dating from 1667) and the cottage offers you the perfect base from where you can explore the beautiful Aude region in the south of France. The village is only 10 minutes from the Medieval City of Carcassonne, another World Heritage site, where you can loose yourself in the many winding lanes, looking at the beautiful architecture and being swamped with the many years of exciting history.
Canal Cottage is the perfect location from where to explore this wonderful area of France. On the ground floor there is a pretty kitchen/dining room with a lovely fireplace to warm up those longer winter evenings or where you can enjoy a nice glass of local wine after your days adventures. On the ground floor is also the shower room with toilet. Upstairs is a comfortable lounge with t.v., stereo, games and books. The sunshine floods into the double bedroom which has a very comfortable double bed and plenty of wardrobe space.
Trebes has a selection of restaurants, bars and shops (including 2 lovely bakers where you can buy your fresh croissants every morning!). You can take boat trips along the Canal, hire bicycles and enjoy the tranquil towpaths once used by horses to pull barges, or wander slowly through the acres of vineyards. This area of France is of course the heart of the Cathar Country and is full of ancient Abbeys, Chateaux and fortified villages. From the stunning Abbey de Fontfroide hidden in the valley of the Corbieres, dating from the 11th Century with it's beautiful cloisters and bell-tower, to the Abbey in Lagrasse from the 10th Century sitting on the edge of the River Orbieu.
You can also visit the many wine producers and sample some exceptional local wines and other home produced delicacies. Limoux the home of the original sparkling wine - decades before Champagne - is just 30 minutes drive and you can visit the producers to learn the techniques and to experience the different bubbles.
There is a stunning lake, 'Lac de la Cavayere' 5 minutes from the cottage where you can relax in the sun, take a dip in the cooling waters, fish, hire pedalos or stroll around the lake enjoying the beautiful countryside. The coast at Narbonne is approximately 45 minutes drive and there you can bronze yourself on the miles of sandy beaches, windsurf, etc. White water rafting is also available for the more daring and then up into the Pyrenees offering wonderful walks in the summer months and skiing in the winter.
All year round the local French people will use any excuse to have a 'Fete'(village party) - launching the wines, cherry festivals, marble festivals, concerts in the open air in the City of Carcassonne, firework displays (14th July you will see the fireworks over the City which are literally breathtaking).
There are several spas in the area which you can visit to 'take the waters' and the larger cities of Perpignan, Toulouse, Montpellier and Beziers are all within 2 hours drive.
Carcassonne is truly spectacular at Christmas with a wonderful outdoor ice-skating rink, wooden chalets selling local produce and beautiful handmade specialities for that extra special Christmas gift, magical Christmas lights all around the upper and lower cities plus a fantastic 40m Big Wheel that runs day and night to experience a sky view of the wonderous City and surrounding areas. It's like walking into a winter wonder land!!! |
