This was such a magical unique place. We had to make some tough decisions from the lanai when having home made breakfast or dinner........should we watch the amazing sunset or the whales jumping around a couple of feet away? It is close to the best beach to snorkel, Poipu. Sea turtles swimming all around you, sea lions on the shore. Close to shops restaurants and activities. On top of that the apartment was so cozy, had everything you could need for amenities, to cook, to take to the beach etc. We had a great welcome package from the Carter's and an even better stay....thank you so much!!!!! I am writing this review to the sound of the surf right outside the condo. The VRBO description is dead on, but can't do the place justice. You can see the ocean wherever you turn in this condo, and the lanai is much bigger than most. The waves break right in front of your face, but the spray doesn't travel to the lanai. We have watched beautiful sunrises (though you can't see the sun come up, as it is around the bend) and gorgeous sunsets. We sit in our chairs on the lanai while other residents gather on the lawn beside us to watch the sun go down. We feel very special :-) We have stayed on Maui and Oahu, and Kauai is our favorite. What a beautiful place. Plumeria everywhere, as well as other delicious-smelling bushes and flowers. The pool is surrounded by fragrant bushes and hibiscus. We have had it all to ourselves at times, or sharing it with a handful of people. Not too small at all, if you read that in the Kauai Revealed guidebook. Frankly, we feel let down by that book. The Makahuena, while not as new as some of the other places around it, has an incredible location. There is a path coming off the property and going north that runs along the beach past the Diamond Resorts complex and then the Hyatt. (When you see how far back the buildings on those properties are set from the beach, you will appreciate the Makahuena even more). You continue past the Hyatt onto a trail that leads up into the lithified cliffs. Breathtaking views up there, very inspirational for runners :-) Waimea is an hour's drive away, and another 15 mins. to see the Na Pali coast from land (Kokee State Park) - spectacular each. Ke'e Beach is a 90 minute drive (head out early, parking is limited), and is a lovely beach with views of the Na Pali coast from the other angle. You can also hike from Ke'e Beach on the Kalalau Trail to see the Na Pali coast. Our kids have had a blast boogie boarding at Brennecke Beach which isn't very far from the condo, and we have snorkeled every day at different beaches all over the island, but mostly around Poipu. Back to the condo - the owners are gracious and helpful. The kitchen is stocked with every implement we needed, not fancy but serviceable. We really appreciated the icemaker in the fridge - nothing stays cold for long here. We used the dishwasher every day, as well as the washer/dryer. There are extra towels, boogie boards, beach chairs, umbrellas, and beach mats provided by the owners. Condo staff are nice, too.

The lanai is paradise
The lanai is paradise
Stayed in this property last week of Jan, first week of Feb 2012 and really enjoyed it. The lanai on the Ocean front is something you can't even imagine !!! Watched whales, spinner dolphins and turtles, and the most beautiful sunsets everyday. Furniture on the lanai very comfortable. The condo itself is a bit dated, needs new bedding, a TV in bedrooms etc, but comfortable, Spent most of the time in the pool,on the beach or on that lanai. The property is very quiet and within walking distance to both Poipu beach and Shipwreck beach. If you like to walk in the mornings there are many choices of different routes you can take right from the condo. We will definitely be back, already planning next years trip. Owners super nice and easy to work with.

Our family stayed here for a week recently and had a fantastic time. Kelly is an honest, thorough and responsive owner. His rental terms are renter friendly and made us feel very comfortable and assured about renting from him. The condo is well equipped, spacious and had everything our family needed for our entire stay. The kitchen has all the essentials for cooking. The views from the lanai are spectacular - we enjoyed spectacular sunsets everyday while enjoying a glass of wine after a day of fun in the sun. What more can we ask for?

This accommodation was sweet sweet sweet! We enjoyed every minute of our stay! Watching whales, spinner dolphins and even turtles while having a glass of wine from the lanaii was amazing as was the sunsets we saw almost every night. The accommodations were superb and comfortable as this site says. I can't recommend a better place and as we toured around the neighborhood you would say the same thing. Kauai's golf was awesome and take a tour around the island in a helicopter. I would definitely recommend Captain Andy's for a snorkel trip as that was a highlight for us. I have already recommended all our friends if they stay in Kauai to check out this place. Restaurants were fantastic and Kelly's recommendations were spot on! Calgary, AB May, 2011

Owner response: We are glad you enjoyed your trip to Kauai. It was a pleasure hosting you, and we hope you will return to enjoy another trip.
For anyone looking for a "true" oceanfront property, this is it! We were very fortunate to have been able to spend 3 weeks in this lovely condo. It is very private and all that you see from the 40 foot lanai is the beautiful blue ocean and quite often turtles, dolphins and whales . It is quiet and peaceful. We saw beautiful sunsets every evening as we ate our meals on the lanai. The condo is very spacious, well equipped and well maintained. While on a Holoholo Charter, we were lucky to see about 5 or 6 whales, more spinner dolphins, monk seals and manta rays plus the indescribable Napali Coast - an incredible boat tour. We would also recommend having a Puka Dog - a real different take on the traditional hot dog. Waimea Canyon is a must along with the North Shore. Kelly was great to deal with and very accommodating. He and Mimmi have done a great job in furnishing and decorating the condo. All in all, a great vacation.

Home Away from Home
This was our second 2-week stay at Kelly & Mimi's condo. You can't beat the location because you really can't get any more oceanfront than this. The sunsets are spectacular! We ate all of our meals on the spacious lanai, and love the fact that the Carter's provide games, books, and beach essentials for their guests - especially love the beach chairs because we used to have to buy them. The condo is within walking distance to both Poipu and Shipwreck beach, so the location can't be beat. Working with Kelly is wonderful because he goes the extra mile to accomodate your needs. We will definitely stay here again because this condo feels like a home away from home.

Owner response: We appreciate that our many returning guests always enjoy their stay. It is a pleasure to develop friendships with the people who frequent our property year after year..
We have just returned from a wonderful stay in this condo in Kauai. It took our breath away to see the waves breaking on the rocks directly in front of us while sitting on the lanai!! I must have taken 50 pictures as each crashing wave was more splendid than the last. We could have spent our whole stay in and around this condo. It was clean and had every amenity possible. It truly had a Hawaiian feel with the open concept and the constant breeze off the ocean. I didn't realize that it isn't air conditioned when we booked the unit, but it wasn't needed even though the temperature was 28 degrees outside. It is close to the pool and hot tub but the complex was very quiet. The beds were very comfortable and the sound of the waves lulled us to sleep every night. We especially enjoyed the food gift basket left by Kelly. Thanks Kelly for sharing your little bit of paradise with us. We stayed in 3 different condos on 3 islands during our visit to Hawaii and this (5104)was by far the highlight of our visit. I would go back in a heartbeat

We feel lucky to have found this well cared for, well furnished ocean front apartment, which is among the best we have rented. The long lanai is a perfect place for breakfast, lunch or dinner, and especially for viewing sunsets. We also had many sightings of whales and turtles, and the bonus of a great rainbow view (and photo). Our personal favorite activity was an early morning walk over the Makahuena Headland to the path system close to the beach into and across the Hyatt Resort grounds. Then on to the partially shaded trail over the dunes up to the cliffs and headlands for further ocean viewing and exercise. Returning via the Coffee shop at the Hyatt for a pleasant rest on the terrace, and purchase of a "real" newspaper to browse in the afternoon heat. Koloa Old Town makes a nice short trip to learn some history as well as collect essentials. The "Emperor's Emporium" even had "made-in-Hawaii" children's clothes. Thanks for your attention to the needs of your guests. Yours is definitely a place worth returning to.

5104 is a fantastic place to stay. The views from the lanai and the condo are spectacular. We saw beautiful sunsets, huge crashing waves, boats, turtles, and spinner dolphins. My wife, an interior designer, loved the furniture and set up. The grounds are well maintained with lots of beautiful plants and very clean. The pool and hot tub were excellent and good size. The condo is located in a great spot that is close to lots of activites and beaches. We loved it and had a great time in Kauai. Kelly, the owner, is very helpful and I highly recommended this piece of paradise.

Why the Owner Chose Other Poipu Properties:
We fell in love with this property the minute we walked in. Not only does every living area of the condo look out at the water, but you are so close you hear and feel the ocean as it crashes into the rocks right below you. So many guests have commented about needing to 'force' themselves to leave the condo because the views are so incredible. You can sit on the lanai and watch the sunset, and in the morning you can look for sea turtles or the Spinner Dolphins that frequently swim by. Don't just see the water on your visit: hear and feel the force of the ocean right in front of you!
