Second Time not a Charm
Guest: Second Time Renter

We stayed in this house this summer, returning after our original stay about five years ago. This time around, we realized that nothing had been updated - not even the bedding. And more of the owner's personal belongings were viewable than ever before. In the end, the owner tried to keep our deposit stating several things we'd done wrong, including taking a bed pillow we don't have - and would not have wanted given the age of the linens. Eventually, after being threatened in emails, we were able to get most of our deposit back...2 months later. I'd think twice before contracting this home. We've stayed in over 20 VRBO-type of places and have always been delighted. This time was a big disappointment. Beware.
Owner response:We are disappointed to learn that this guest was less than pleased with their stay in our home, particularly since they were so pleased with the property and its amenities when they stayed with us in the summer of 2007and said as much when booking their return. If their comments about the condition of the house were intended to imply that they expected to find a house completely redecorated since the last time they rented, we think that such an expectation is completely unreasonable. It is also very unfortunate that these guests chose not to disclose in their review for vrbo or to us without our prompting, that they had caused damage to our home, in particular breaking a component part of a custom Italian chandelier. We were not told of this damage by these guests notwithstanding that they had our contact information in their possession and we only became aware of the damage after visiting the home after their departure. We were shocked not to have been informed by them about this damage and we were immediately concerned that we would have difficulty being able to find the replacement parts for the chandelier since it was a custom installation. It is our standard practice to require a separate damage deposit check from all of our renters to offset against the possibility of damage to our home beyond ordinary wear and tear. The damage done by these guests was well beyond ordinary wear and tear and since they had not been forthcoming about the damage they had done to our home by contacting us without our prompting, we felt justified in cashing their damage deposit check and then sorting out the costs and refunding them the difference. The gap in time between cashing their check and settling up with them was driven in no small part by the time we had to wait to get the replacement parts for the chandelier. Until we knew that we could get the parts and the final cost of those parts, we were in no position to reconcile their account. In our history of renting the house through vrbo, this is the first time we have felt compelled to cash a renters’ damage deposit check as a result of damage to our home. We were disappointed we had to take this action because these guests had rented with us before and as a result we would have expected them to behave very differently. If they had been forthcoming about the damage, this matter would have been handled very differently. We are sorry they chose to behave as they did.
