Memorable Summer Vacation - Sentimental Journey
Memorable Summer Vacation - Sentimental Journey
This house is a wonderful find! It is spacious with an unbelieveable view. It has a great layout. We spent most of the time on the deck and in the family room which opens up to the kitchen. If you want some alone time, the wrap around deck outside the bedrooms is a great place to chill. Although there are many restaurants in the area, we preferred to cook in and watch the dolphins swim by as we ate dinner. The kitchen is well equipped. The place was clean upon arrival and easy to keep clean since there was an awesome outdoor shower which you pass on your way from the house to the beach. While we were here we went deep sea fishing and crabbing and did quite a bit of biking. Because the house is RIGHT on the beach, my favorite part was walking out the door and sitting on the beach, surfing the waves and building sand castles with the kids. I would highly recommend this property to a family or a group of friends that wants a great summer memory.

Great views but with problem areas
Great views but with problem areas
Good things: The views were amazing. Private beach access and Great room were wonderful. Appreciated having linens and towels provided. Pack-n-play in great shape. Kitchen counter was clean. Loved using the Sanderling pool. Problem areas: - The house is in serious need of deep cleaning. Dust build-up, grime and cobwebs abound. On the refrigerator is a list of what the cleaning people should clean - just surfaces/basic cleaning. They don't touch deck areas, which have LOTS of cobwebs. - Grill was extremely dirty, out of propane and had cobwebs on handles. - On the VRBO site, there is a porch swing on lower deck and screened-in porch, neither of which are there. - Large amount of rusted out/broken beach gear on the parking level which is dangerous and should be thrown away. Outdoor shower was completely dirty, with debris covering the ground, and more cobwebs. - First morning, there were TONS of small dead bugs covering everything in the Great room (holes in screens?) Safety concerns: - Upper level deck is in extremely bad shape and needs to be replaced. Specifically: 1.) rail was decaying and ready to fall off the deck, 2.) gate leading to the stairs had come off of its hinges, and 3.) stairs leading from the upper to lower deck had detached from the house making it extremely dangerous. We called OBB, who added two brackets and did a quick fix on the gate. - Upper level deck has a huge gap under the built-in seat, which is a fall hazard to any small child/small animal. I sent the above items to the owner. In short, she said that the cleaning crew has 4 hours to clean, they do their best, the owners are pleased, the house is rented constantly (with many return guests) so that says something. "Spiders and cobwebs are just a reality at the beach," she said. She would re-evaluate the stairs/porch in the off-season. My interpretation is not much, if anything, will be resolved. Given this, I felt it was important to share this information with future renters.

Manager response: We are grateful for any guest providing insights into how we can best provide a relaxing and pleasant vacation for our renters. That includes the comment of the above review. We appreciate the positive observations that were mentioned. More importantly, we would like to respond to the concerns that were voiced: 1) The house was in need of a deep clean - We have worked with a wonderful management company for several years. We believe that they are the best in the Outer Banks, and we rarely have complaints about the cleanliness of the house. A deep clean is performed at the beginning of each rental season. As was pointed out to the guest, our house is one of the most popular in the area. It rents consistently from April through October. Many guests love the house and return year after year. Given a strong rental history, the cleaners do an excellent job preparing the house for each guest. (As an aside, we were just at the house and found it quite clean). 2) It is true that the porch swing was removed. It was old and we thought it unsafe. It was replaced with a hammock. This was not meant to mislead our guests and will be changed on the website. 3) Rusty beach chairs – These have been replaced. The salt air is tough on furniture, bikes, etc. All chairs are replaced and all deck furniture replaced or repainted at least once a year. 4) Gas grill was not clean – This was newly purchased this spring and while has shown some wear, was fully functional. 5) Concern about the safety of the deck railing and stairs – We had $35,000 of renovations performed this past offseason by a professional and highly respectable contractor. We specifically asked if there were any structural issues and we were assured that there were not. None the less, the front railing, while safe, was worn, and has been completely replaced over the past week. 6) Spiders and cobwebs - Guilty as charged. With all due respect to our guests, living at the ocean is partly about interacting with nature. We cannot prevent nature from doing what nature does on the decks and by the ocean. Having just been at the property for the past two weeks, we have noted no problems with bugs in the house. We take our commitment to provide a memorable getaway for each guest very seriously. In our email to the above guest, we said we would address their concerns in a timely fashion. We received their email in early August. We believe we have best addressed those concerns.
We just stayed at your house this past week. The layout of the house and view of the ocean were great. I felt the house was dirty when we arrived even though the cleaners had just left. The air conditioning vent on the entry door level was caked with dust and there were cob webs in the bunk bed room and on the hand railing going upstairs as well as all over the outside deck. Needless to say my girls did not sleep well knowing there were spiders in their room. The back right bathroom smelled of urine upon arrival and the odor never improved. There were 2 chairs on your deck that had rotted and were unusable. I believe you should remove broken furniture off your deck. You definitely need to spray for ants. They were crawling all over the kitchen counter, back door and bathroom upstairs. The coffee maker broke on Tuesday. Phoned Amber at outerbanks blue. Received new coffee maker on Thursday afternoon. We bought a grill and left it for your future guests. The ones you had at the house are not in great working order. I gave my list of issues to Outerbanks Blue upon delivering the coffee maker. Despite all of these issues, we had a great vacation. We had great weather, many dophin sightings and beautiful sun rises.

Manager response: Thank you for your review of our home “Sentimental Journey.” The house has a special place in our hearts, and I’m so glad that you enjoyed your stay last week. I understand the weather was perfect, and you are right it is a fantastic view from the living room isn’t it. I’m really surprised and disappointed to hear that the property wasn’t as clean as you expected. Typically Outer Banks Blue’s cleaners are spot on with the cleaning of the property, and they usually follow up with an inspector after your arrival to be sure everything is satisfactory. Just keep in mind in the future if you ever have a problem to please let them know right away because they keep the office open late on check in days, and I’m sure they would have rectified anything within a couple of hours of your arrival. I’m sorry about the coffeemaker not making it through the week…glad they got you a replacement right promptly. As for the deck furniture, we of course did take a long look at everything when we were there in the spring. It gets a lot of use and we will be down at the property in a couple of weeks and will make sure everything is in good order. Thanks again for your review, we look forward to welcoming you back to “Sentimental Journey” in the near future. We are already taking bookings for next year, and weeks are going fast! All the best!
Home away from home
Home away from home
This will be our 4th consecutive Spring break (from the education profession) to this most awesome home. We have stayed at 3 other OBX locations, but this one is, by far, our favorite. It has a lived in feel & is warm & inviting. This is our week of ocean front living (which we wish we could do permanently) & we think we have found the best deal on OBX. From the time we walk in to the time we depart, we feel like it is our slice of heaven on earth. Someday we hope to meet the gracious owners and thank them personally for sharing their beautiful home with us. We look forward to returning many more times.

Our vacation to the Outer Banks was very enjoyable. Weather was good and your place fit the bill. By the way thank you for arranging for some porpoises to come by in the morning to entertain us. It was much appreciated.
