While the cabin is ideal for a romantic getaway or spirit replenishing retreat, it is also located close to multiple outdoor activities. If you choose an ACTIVE vacation, Sand Dollar Beach is 5 minutes away where beach combing, surfing and picnicking are available. Numerous hiking opportunities abound in the adjoining Los Padres National Forest. Catch some rays on the built-in sun bench or take a dip in the hot tub while watching awesome sunsets. While soak ing in the hot tub, listen to the surf and sea lions below. Wildlife is as close as the gardens. Big Sur Coast Cabin is a certified Backyard Wildlife Habitat site.
Relax on the sectional and bird watch through the windows for local favorites at the feeders. If you are very lucky, you might see a magnificent California Condor at eyeball-to-eyeball level. And when total darkness decends, sit on the deck and watch the Milky Way appear with no city lights to compete.
Chefs can try their skills on the outdoor kitchen/patio stainless steel grill and side burner.
Still too active? Relax, do nothing but enjoy being here. Satellite TV ( flat screen High Definition) ensures that no one has to miss their favorite TV programs. You may wish to bring your favorite DVD's or use the cabin's library to enjoy with that favorite novel. Forget that novel? Find a new author from the small in-house library. Take one, leave one.
Our caretaker Gail is close by (on site, out of sight) to ensure a smooth stay. She is well versed in the local flora, fauna, and the nearby area and should be able to help you with any questions you may have.
The cabin will not be available November and part of December for new flooring and tile work.

Map & Owner's Profile
Owner's Map of Big Sur
Almost 50 years ago my father had the foresight and ambition to "build himself a cabin". Introduced to this area by his father before him, who searched for gold in the nearby Los Burros mining area, he grew up with a love of the California coast and in particular, the Big Sur area. With virtually no services available and only a vision of the site he choose, he started his cabin. From building the road, clearing the site, hauling lumber and supplies, framing, etc.,he brought his vision of a coast cabin to reality.
For many years, the house, simply known as "the coast cabin" by family and friends, has been a favorite getaway and meeting place. Not only has it served as a place for fun and laughter but as a retreat for those who need time spent in quiet reflection. The cabin with its unique setting and stunning views offers a respite in todays hurried world. The memories made are as varied as the guests who have been there. We, as family, know we are truly blessed to have this treasure and we share the cabin with you.

We spent a January weekend and despite the cooler (50s and 60s) temperatures, Big Sur was the most unbelievable place we had ever been. The pictures in the posting and even the ones we took don't do justice how great the rental's appearance, amenities, and views are. The listing description was extremely accurate and we were completely prepared by the owner for everything (including the dirt road leading to the cabin as well the limited grocery options available nearby.) The property was clean and extremely well-maintained. I recommend this property to anyone and will most certainly be bringing my parents there when they visit California this upcoming summer. The cooking amenities at the cabin are extremely good and we cooked our own meals for breakfast and dinner both days. Just remember that there are no full grocery options for at least an hour and a half coming from the north Monterrey/Carmel is the last place to get whatever you need to get especially for grilling and fresh vegetables. Restaurants are not plentiful in the area, but for a good beer we'd recommend the Big Sur taphouse about 30 miles north. Gorda was expensive but the staff was incredibly knowledgeable and friendly. San Dollar Beach is unbelievably beautiful and we'd also recommend Jade Beach. Otherwise just pulling over at turnouts and hiking to the ocean is just amazing. An overall great time and look forward to going back! If you want to be around lots of people, human structures, and staff waiting on you, this is not the place to go. But if you want nature's greatest creations, peacefulness, the sound of the ocean putting you to sleep, and to enjoy those things in a house/cabin with a full kitchen, plumbing, and electrical outlets, this should be your number 1 choice.

Our Best California Memory

We flew to San Francisco in Jan 2010 with two of our best friends from college (left the kids behind with grandparents) & took a week driving down the Pacific Coast on the trip of a lifetime. By far, our best memory of the vacation was the two nights we spent in the Big Sur Coast Cabin. As other reviewers have mentioned, definitely read the very accurate online description before renting...but if the description sounds appealing, YOU MUST STAY AT THIS PLACE! The views are beyond imagination, it feels like you have the entire California coast to yourself, and the amenities of the property will not disappoint. Make sure to stay long enough to do some local hiking (www.hikinginbigsur.com), and be sure to visit Sunset Beach & Salmon Creek as well. My only regrets are that we couldn't have stayed longer, that we live on the opposite side of the United States from the place, and that it took me so long to write a review! We will be back...I promise. This is one of those experiences that lingers in your memory for a long, long time (it's been over a year & I still think about it often).

We spent 4 nights here over New Years Eve for a relaxing getaway and were not disappointed. The cabin is cozy (not cramped) and semi-rustic, with fantastic 180-degree views of what must be 100 miles of wide-open Pacific coastline and no neighbors in sight. Since we were here at the end of December, we knew we probably wouldn't get to enjoy the gardens and outdoor kitchen much. Some high winds and a touch of rain kept us holed up warm indoors, but eventually we did get out to walk the beaches and hunt for jade. We spent our indoor time reading and relaxing, watching the ocean's changing moods and shifting sunlight, and keeping a constant lookout for migrating whales, of which we saw plenty. We loved waking in the morning to the peaceful roar of the surf in the distance, being able to lie in bed half-dozing, watching the breakers roll in. On New Year's Eve day itself, the weather finally turned perfect: the winds settled down, the sun burned off the fog, and we could relax in the hot tub and enjoy the gorgeous views and tranquility of this lovely place. We'd love to return with warmer weather to take full advantage of the grill patio, gardens, and decks. Note: we were a bit trepidatious coming up the steep twisty dirt road the first time (also every time going back out) -- the warnings about needing 4WD and no low-slung vehicles should not be ignored! Also re-read the property description carefully - it is very accurate - and be aware that the cabin is off-grid so power conservation is a must.

Our visit to your cabin was the most relaxing, comfortable vacation we have ever had. The views, sunsets, decks, bunnies and birds, whales and dolphins, were all spectacular! One of my favorite parts was laying in bed listening to the ocean lull me to sleep at night. So nice! I highly recommend this wonderful place to everyone! After a month, I still think about it every day. . . .*sigh*

All in all we LOVED our visit. The kitchen was well stocked. The basket of goodies was a wonderful surprise-loved the wine. The linens were heavenly and the beds were so warm and cozy. We were amazed at the gardens and loved the fresh cut flowers on the table. We really appreciated the shampoo and soaps that were provided, too. The view was spectacular-better than we could have imagined. You must be very proud of this slice of heaven. Please keep sharing it!

We had a lovely family retreat. We loved the rustic simplicity plus the luxury of a hot tub and big screen tv. The view is extrordinary, the coast itself is amazing. The opportunites to hike and surf are endless. My son called it "Utopian", an apt observation.

The Big Sur Cabin reminds me of the Eagle's song, "Hotel California" and the line, "You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave!". My heart and mind go back to the incredible view of the Pacific Ocean and a life-changing vacation of vacations. Can't wait to get back!

We had a wonderful and relaxing few days at the Big Sur Cabin. The scenery and views cannot be beaten. The cabin is well equiped and sitting in the hot tub watching the sun set over the sea is worth the journey alone.
