Set on 85 feet of private, pristine white sand beach, this clean, exceptionally well-appointed home offers classic, Hawaiian country living. This cozy and warm traditional Hawaiian beach cottage is centrally located in Punaluu, between Kailua Town and Historic Haleiwa Town, on the Windward side of Oahu. With its perfect location, Hale Ho’onanea offers a full compliment of diverse activities conveniently located nearby. Experience one of the island’s best kept secrets for yourself.

Wake up early to be rewarded with a perfect Hawaiian sunrise directly in front of your private beach. Comfortable trade winds and incredible coral reefs encourage you to take in a memorable snorkel or an easy paddle in the two-person ocean kayak. Relax on the cozy lanai with your favorite book and enjoy the sounds of the exotic tropical birds and the trade winds blowing through the towering palm trees.

Just steps from the inviting Pacific Ocean, let the soothing sounds of the waves wash away any remaining stress. As the sun passes behind the majestic Ko’olau Mountains, just yards behind the house, relax in one of the beach side lounge chairs, with your favorite beverage, and toast to a perfect day at Hale Ho’onanea.

Many new upgrades abound throughout the interior of the house. Exotic, solid bamboo flooring from China was installed just over a year ago. Improvements in the kitchen include: a new glass top range, refrigerator, washer and dryer. There are new remote controlled, split air conditioning units in each bedroom, as well as two remote controlled ceiling fans, one in the family room and one in the kitchen.

Each bathroom has newly installed toilets and sink fixtures. After a fun day of play in the surf and sand, rinse off in the outdoor shower. For entertainment there is a DVD home theater with surround sound in the Family Room.

Each bedroom in Hale Ho’onanea offers a spacious, peaceful environment to relax and get a restful night’s sleep. The Master Bedroom has a pillow-top queen bed, large dresser, hanging closet, single daybed/reading couch, CD player with alarm clock and a large picture window which looks directly out to the ocean. Open the bamboo blinds before you go to bed and let the morning sunrise be your wake-up call. Close the blinds in the afternoon, set your ideal temperature with the remote controlled A/C, place a soothing Hawaiian CD in the stereo and slip blissfully into a paradise nap.

Perfect for two little ones, the “Sky” bedroom, Ke Aouli, has two single beds, two large windows looking out to the ocean and up to the mountains as well as remote controlled air conditioning. The “Coral” bedroom, Ako’ako’a, has a full size pillow-top bed, windows looking up to the majestic Ko’olau Mountains, remote controlled air conditioning and a half bath.

Let your friends and family know just how much fun you are having with access to high-speed, wireless internet throughout the house. Make reservations at a local restaurant or sign up for surfing lessons with the free, “local call” phone service. If quality time alone with the family is a must, then prepare a delicious meal in the fully stocked kitchen and eat outside on the backyard patio, just feet from the ocean. With a teak wood table and chairs, umbrella and a fire pit, enjoy a truly unique experience right along the beach.

Hale Ho’onanea sits on the northeastern side of the island of Oahu, in the rustic fishing village of Punaluu. It is centrally located just 45 minutes away from Honolulu International Airport, Waikiki an Kailua Town. Classic Hawaiian country living best describes this area of the island.

This was our first trip to hawaii and we couldn't have chosen a better place to stay. Property was clean and cozy. Beds were comfy. We used the kayak and watched the sunrise each morning from our bed. The kids ran out each morning in pj's to play in their ocean back yard. Cottage neighbors are other residential homes, so location was nice and quiet. We had a wonderful private beach to swim in, gentle enough for the kids. Found a few fish swimming around. It was great. I would highly recommend this place for families. BBQ'd outside once, but got a bit too windy in the evening to use the fire pit. Locals told us summer winds are much calmer. Overall really great experience.

Stayed here as a family of five. It was really everything we needed. We would stay here again in a heartbeat! Pros: Double kayak, snorkel gear and fins, reef shoes, boogie boards, some broken ish but still fun surf boards, beach umbrella, sand toys, outdoor shower, small charcoal grill, tons of towels... Everything! Beds were comfortable. Pillows are queen sized which is awesome. There are plenty of linens. A/C is the bedrooms works perfectly. Beach is perfect. Soft sand. Water is pretty calm too. Great for kids! Good snorkeling right off the back of the house. Lots of colorful fish and even sea turtles. Good kitchen. Stocked. Happy for the coffee maker with re useable filter. Be aware that there is no dishwasher. Not a big deal to us as we brought our kids and therefore still had dishwashers. Nice new Washer and dryer. A vacuum ( you will be happy to see this as the sand will show up everywhere no matter how hard you try) Cons: really not many. Let's see... I wish the blinds weren't those awful broke down 90s blinds. And the couches were pretty crazy uncomfortable, not that you will be sitting much. And that super cute blue room could maybe use a few light blankets. Oh and we never found the dustpan. Like I said not many cons just teeny things. Yeah the house shows some wear but as people who lived near the ocean for years I can tell you it is harsh on wood! This is just a normal beach house thing. Tips: -Grocery stores-Tamara's (right beside the Longs drugs) just down the road has much better prices than Foodland in Laie. Better still hit Costco on your way out of the airport. Cheapest gifts too. -If you blow a fuse there is a fuse panel in the blue room behind the door behind a picture. -There is a shave ice shack about 7 houses up that, when open, is the best. Run by the sweetest lady who will tell you anything you need to know about the area. We walked the beach to get it. Area: best place on the island! Far from Honolulu which is exactly what we wanted but it still took us less than an hour to get to Pearl Harbor. It quiet and safe and the people that are around are nice. Right off Kamehameha Hwy. The town of Laie (nearby) is pretty much shut down on Sunday due to its Mormon roots. Not a big deal though as we found the better, closer, Tamara's for groceries. Thank you for this awesome place and the memories.

So let me start by saying that if you are looking for a beautiful beach right in your backyard this is it. The property is beautiful and private. Me and my wife and 3 young children had a great time playing outside and enjoying the ocean. Hard to find a place like this for the price. It was very calm water and plenty of sandy beach for the little ones. That said the house was not everything we would've wanted it to be upon our arrival it was not properly cleaned. The owner was very quick to remedy the problem but I would've expected him to have at least sent us out to dinner or something to make up for the inconvenience. We had to leave the property for several hours while the house was cleaned. After the cleaning the house was much more enjoyable but still did feel a bit run-down in certain areas. Overall we enjoyed our stay and after speaking with the owner I believe many of these issues will be remedied. This property is off the beaten path and perfect if you want to be left alone and enjoy the beach!

This is a perfect place for those that want to get away from the crowds! The beach had maybe 5 people walking through a day, so it was easy to think it really was an exclusive beach. The home was well stocked and we wanted for nothing. The only down side was the dryer was not working, but I believe that was replaced by now. The sea kayak and beach toys, surf and boogie boards were a hit with my kids. If you want to spend a lot of time in Honolulu/Waikiki, get somewhere closer as it is a 45 min drive or so. But that's kind of the point. :)

We just got back a few days ago, and you know it was good when during the last few days you start hearing "anyway we can stay longer" first, property managers Tony, pascall and Family are wonderfull, and very helpful. The house is great with lots of big windows to enjoy the ocean even when sitting in the house. beds are comfortable, kitchen is well stocked, backyard and beach was great and almost felt like a private beach, communication and transaction with owners was timely and smooth,. location was great for us no wakiki or condo crowd. We had a small wedding in the backyard and it could not have been better with the beach, a coconut tree, and a cool hawaiian breez for a background, in all, it was a wonderfull vacation and I would recommend this property to others and stay here again in a heartbeat, in fact i hope to do so in the future.

The house was just what we thought and hoped it would be. You can’t beat the value for a nice clean house on the beach. If you are familiar with the area and the fact that the home is right on the Kamehameha Highway then you will not be disappointed. The home was clean, well maintained while still a bit rustic. Tony, the property manager is great, very responsive and a nice guy. I’ve stayed in other private rental properties and happy to recommend this one.

Pros: - Excellent communication with owner - Clean - Quiet - Full featured - Alarm - Friendly property manager - Beach side with sunrise - Great water pressure from shower and taps - AC in each bedroom (we didn't need to use it) Cons: - Signs of age - Rocky beach front - Water sports gear old/broken or non existent - No gated entrance to parking lot - Small 20" tube TV with no DVD home theater - Outdoor furniture on lanai not weather proof and felt musty...was not used - No beach chairs - Couches were hard - Queen bed was saggy We stayed here for 5 days and enjoyed having a sense of having a home away from home. The kids (4&6) had their own room and plenty of space to run around. We made great meals and enjoyed the fantastic views from the windowed wall to the beach. We didn't get to fully enjoy the outdoors as it being the rainy season, there were lots of soggy and windy days. The property is far from any significant 'action' and a car is an absolute must. I basically drove about 100 miles everyday to do the things we wanted to do (Hanauma Bay, Banzai Pipeline, Honolulu, etc...) but the drive along the shore is spectacular...I enjoyed doing it every time and absolutely did not mind it. It was a highlight actually. We enjoyed our stay but there were some things that could have been better based on the property listing and the amount we were paying. I enjoy never staying at the same place twice so I would not normally return here, but I would only recommend it to a friend if they went when the price was that of the low season.

Owner response: As the proud owners of Hale Ho'Onanea, we are always striving to make our guests stay as wonderful, comfortable, and memorable as possible. Part of that philosophy entails taking all comments from our guests to heart, and making improvements or changes accordingly. Although fabulous and positive comments are always great to hear, the ones which focus on possible areas of improvement are the ones we focus on the most. The number one factor of Hale Ho'Onanea being located directly on the beach on the Windward side of Oahu is that both the house itself, and many items in and around it, are quickly and severely affected by the beautiful Tradewinds that constantly blow in from the Pacific. As the owners, we do our absolute best to keep the house pristine both inside and out. However, many items like water sports gear, and yard furniture disappear on a regular basis due to being left on the beach. The high tide will simply take those items out to sea. We have replaced our two person ocean kayak many times alone due to this. Whenever items float away, we due our best to replace them in a timely manner. As owners of a vacation rental property, and more importantly, a family that also uses vacation rental properties whenever we go on vacation, we are very sensitive to the overall experience of a property and it's accoutrements. To this end, we strive to make our guests stay at Hale Ho'Onanea an amazingly refreshing, relaxing, enjoyable and memorable experience. We will, and are addressing the few areas that need improvement. My wife and I would like to extend an invitation to you and your family to come stay at Hale Ho'Onanea, and thank all our guests who have stayed with us in the past, as well as those to come! Aloha and Mahalo, Kerry and Hilary Smith Owners

My husband and I rented this beach house for a month this spring. The house was mostly as described but needs some updating. It was clean (and no bugs), warm, cozy and well stocked. The beach is truly beautiful and it was very interesting to see the shifting sand over time. We even saw whales out on the horizon. Unfortunately, the weather was windy and cool most days due to the proximity of the mountains. The locals (who are wonderful) told us weather was much better before the Tsunami warning. Also, because you are on an island, it is easy to find sun. We went to Kailua beach, Waikiki, Turtle Bay, Sunset Beach or Haleiwa for sun. Haleiwa was our favorite place. The Saturday farmers' market is excellent and there are several good restaurants - Haleiwa Joe's, Jamieson's by the Sea (seafood omelet) and Cholo's. We did notice a huge increase in traffic from eight years ago. The worst of it is in Honolulu-Waikiki. We had 3 different groups of people staying with us. Even with six people, everyone felt they had enough space and we all enjoyed our time in beautiful Hawaii. The appliances are no longer new and some of the furnishings and the barbecue should be replaced. However, the beds were good quality and comfortable. The air conditioning was great to have for sleeping. Pascale and Tony were very friendly and provided prompt, personal assistance and tips. Thanks Kerry

We stayed for four nights in mid-February and were very pleased. The photos and descriptions don't lie. It's right on the beach, which is beautiful. My wife and I took a couple of walks per day up and down the beach. There is no outside curb appeal to the house, but it's very nice inside. It's in a row of houses that are right next to each other. Here are some issues you might consider: - The location is far from just about anywhere, especially restaurants. If that's what you want, then this is the place for you. When you do want to go anywhere, you have to take a two-lane road, usually behind a long line of very very slow drivers. - The comment in another review about coral in the water right in front of the house is correct. Going into the water is for the kayak only. I didn't even like it for snorkeling, which I tried. Swimming beaches are close by. - The DVD player did not work and, if you're taking kids, they won't be too thrilled with the available cable TV channels. On the other hand, it's Hawaii so who wants to stay inside watching the tube? - One family member felt a bed was too hard, I didn't test it myself so it might only be a matter of taste. One of the couches is all but worthless. The other is extremely comfortable, as is one outside on a deck. - There's no dishwasher or disposal, in case you plan to cook in the house. On the other hand, there's a large pantry, plenty of cookware and a smoker grill. The issues above are generally minor. I recommend the house to those who want to get away from the touristy spots (I despise Beverly Hills, uh, I mean Waikiki) and avoid the islands rather inconsistent hotels.
