Garden lovers and romantics alike will especially enjoy this charming cottage that has the best of both worlds - views of the ocean and a garden setting. Enjoy a romantic breakfast or lunch in the secluded, North Coast garden surrounded by flowers and tall trees that are protected from the cold winds on the bluffs. Soak in our Japanese cedar hot tub in the same private setting to the sound of the little rushing stream and waterfall in the gulch below. Our deck is perfect for basking in the sun during the day or stargazing at night.
The house is light and bright with vaulted ceilings, skylights, and French door looking on the garden. Enjoy evening warmth by the Finnish wood-burning stove in this cozy home with a open kitchen perfect for entertaining with friends. There is also an antique carved, piano or satellite TV for evening enjoyment. The romantic Master bed is filled with down comforters and flowing, sheer curtains. Wake up to the view of the ocean framed by the coastal forest. The master bathtub is spacious and also has a view to the ocean.
The house is just a few minutes walk from Russian Gulch State Park and the Point Cabrillo Lighthouse, both treasures of the North Coast with wildflowers, views of Mendocino Village and a blowhole. The Point Cabrillo Lighthouse and Marine Reserve has acres of pristine ocean front trails and deserted beaches that are perfect for a romantic picnic. Walk a bit further or bike to Casper Beach, a perfect place for surfing or kayaking, or to Russia Gulch State Park with its spectacular 30-foot waterfall and miles of mountain bike trails through the redwood forest.

Why the Owner Chose Mendocino
Mendocino is the perfect place for us because of the pristine beauty of nature, the arts and culture in the area and amazing restaurants and wineries. We came to Mendocino for the first time 10 years ago and fell in love with the place and were married on the romantic ocean cliffs there. It is truly a unique, perfect place lost in time and once you visit you will not want to leave.
The Unique Benefits at this House
Our home is unique to the Mendocino Coast because it is very light, open and airy. The previous owners who built the place were artists and created it with much love and unique artistic detail. We fell in love with the house immediately -- it was perfect because we wanted a place close to town but not in the village of Mendocino so we would have more space and privacy. We love being able to sit out on the deck and the garden when it is sunny and warm because our place is protected from the cold ocean winds. It is very magical looking at the ocean from the upstairs bedroom and waking up at night to the perfect view of the moon and stars. We also had a traditional deep Japanese hot tub custom built for our place where we could sit outside under the stars and see the ocean with the smell of cedar in the steamy air. During the summer, we enjoy going to the Farmer's Market to buy organic produce and coming home to cook in the kitchen, getting fresh herbs from the garden, and picking blackberries to make cobbler. Walking or riding our bikes to Point Cabrillo Lighthouse, the waterfall at Russian Gulch Park and having picnics and bonfires down at Casper Beach just down the road are always a must.
Great beach down the road from our house that is good for picnics and nighttime bonfires. Is is set in a cove with calmer waves so it is popular for children, kayakers and surfers.
Beautiful park that has both ocean access and hiking in the redwoods. If you hike or ride you bike back further into the wood there is a beautiful waterfall at the end of the trail.
Less than 5 mins drive South of our house! Great restaurants, cute shops and galleries May - Oct there is an organic Farmer's Market on Fridays.
Beautifully restored lighthouse and museum just a 10-15 minute walk from the house. Spectacular views from the headland trails. During the March Whale Festival, you can watch the grey whales migrate.

Truely A Garden By the Sea!!!!

We are leaving this morning after and incredible two weeks at Garden By the Sea. This could not have been any more perfect for us. We are 75 YO Active Seniors and have been coming to Mendocino for 38 years and finally have found our "Home" away from home. Being perhaps more "mature" than others (smile) we appreciated the comfort, quiet beauty, eclectic decore, the quiet deck and gardens, the view to the Pacific. In addition the well equipped kitchen is wonderful. Betty baked a rhubarb pie with fresh picked rhubarb from the Mendocino Farmers Market. (Make sure you put the Farmers Markets on your To Do list. They are wonderful. Fresh Salmon, wonderful squash and tomatoes, (from Farmers Market) incredible Fritatas made from left over too large lunch portions. Hummmmm Good The facilities are very well maintained and the Yard/Maintanence Man was very helpful when needed. Kim was easy to contact and communicate with and always ready to help. The proximity of so many parks with wonderful vistas , several Zagat rated incredible restaurants and easy walking trails is perfect for retired Seniors. For Fine Dining we would more than recommend Beujolais in Mendocino and The Restaurant in Fort Bragg are excellent. For more casual we enjoyed Herons on the Noyo Harbor Wharf. All but one was good or better but we would not ever return to The Wharf on Noyo Harbor. Very bad. Hope this might help you make up you minds but we will get our next stay booked soon. This is a great spot -- lovely house and garden, near the beautiful Point Cabrillo State Park and an easy drive to Mendocino, Elk, Fort Bragg. The house is very well-equipped and comfortable. We loved the hot tub and master bedroom with ocean views. The owners were very solicitous.

My wife and I stayed at the home in May 2011 because of a wedding we were attending at the Pacific Coast Winery in Fort Bragg. The place is located a very short drive to both downtown Mendecino and Fort Bragg. The home has a very cozy feel to it, and yet feels very spacious. We loved the Cedar hot tub and the flower garden. We never got a chance to use the kitchen, but it look like it was stocked well. When you are in the backyard, it feels like you are in a forest. The owner Kim was very responsive to all of my emails. We loved it and would like to come back someday.

This house is so lovely, peaceful, and private. Enjoyed the beautiful kitchen for some nice meals, the piano, and the hot tub was just divine, especially in the chilly weather we had in July. I loved being out of range of the internet and cell phones. The photos don't really show how private it is, so I wanted to emphasize that.

Thank you. Your home is a refuge of comfort and tranquility. There is care and thought in every last detail, from the garden plantings to the spice collection! We especially loved the Finnish wood stove, Japanese hot tub and the upstairs bath. We shared beautiful meals at your home as Cafe Beaujoulais to ring in the New Year -- an excellent recommendation, thank you. We will surely return and will recommend your home to our families and friends -- Best Wishes, Kate and Andrew (Oakland, CA) PS We saw a seal playing in the surf and eating fish down from your house on the bluffs!

The past four days have been extremely relaxing and joyful because of your lovely home. When walking in for the first time, I automatically got the sense of comfort you should feel in a house. Your garden was beautiful as well and my mother and I took many pictures of it and enjoyed all the different kinds of flowers you have. Thank you for letting us stay and we hope to rebook! -- Leah, Nancy and Michael (Pleasanton, CA)

We thoroughly enjoyed the extremely well-appointed house and exquisitely varied garden. As our days were mainly spent exploring the surrounding areas, coming home to a nice log fire whilst playing board games and enjoying the tranquility was most welcome -- Alison and Charlie (Ipswich, UK)

To begin, our weekend stay at this charming garden get-away was spectacular. The romantic ambiance was stunning, but it was the details that made this stay incredible. Whether it was the charming piano, the antique fireplace, or the view from any given window, this home away from home is certainly a place we hope to visit again.

Wow! That pretty much sums up in one word what the last week was to Diane and me. Your home is beautiful, relaxing, and well put together. We very much enjoyed the whole experience! While we have visited the Mendocino area before and knew what to expect, your home provided so much more than we could have imagined. The last night at the house, Diane and I were laying in the beautiful upstairs bed looking out of the window at a once-in-a-lifetime view of the moon surrounded by trees setting on the beautiful almost fog-free ocean. All in all a great experience. We’re already talking of booking next year’s vacation to the exact same spot, only this time for two weeks. We couldn’t get enough. Thank you once again for the opportunity to relax in such a wonderful environment. . Sincerely, Len & Dianel
