Location: Haleiwa, North Shore Oahu, Oahu, Hawaii, USA (40 minutes from Honolulu International Airport) View Map
Accommodations: Condo, 2 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 2 Baths (Sleeps 2-5)
Keywords: Condominium
Our condominium is probably the finest condominium on the North Shore and one of the very few two bedroom, two bath condominiums on the beach. This is our second home. The condominium is spacious (about 1000 sq.ft. plus 150 sq.ft. on lanai). It is nearly 50% larger than the one bedroom condos in our complex.
There is a surf and sunset view and 50 steps to the best swimming beach on the North Shore. Our beach is protected by three reefs so even in 40ft. surf outside, it is swimmable. You can snorkel for tropical fish and sea turtles as close as 30ft off the sandy beach. If you prefer shade you may sit on the grass just off the beach. For your convenience we have HI SPEED INTERNET AND FREE LOCAL AND FREE U.S. LONG DISTANCE, with two phones and answering machine and caller ID.
Since it is our home, it is not a bare bones "rental" condominium. It is attractively decorated with over 100 pieces of art. In addition, there are over 500 Hawaii books (including various tourist guidebooks) and many CDs, tapes, records, DVDs, and videos. It has been completely remodeled to the highest standards with Hawaiian decor with Koa accents and tiled floors. We expect guests to treat it as they would their own home.
This two bedroom, two bath unit is an end unit on the third floor (top floor-no elevator) in the only condominium complex in Haleiwa (50 units-2 buildings). Unlike the one bedroom units which have small bedroom windows, our’s has floor to ceiling windows and louvers in the bedrooms (this design provides increased light and cross ventilation with views in three directions.) Although this unit can accommodate up to 5 persons, it is extremely comfortable for two people with the luxury and privacy of separate rooms and baths. The condominium has surf and sunset views from the living room and the master bedroom (you can lay in bed and hear and watch the surf and/or sunset). The master bedroom has its own bathroom with tub and shower.
Another unique feature of this two bedroom unit is a double wide lanai (the one bedroom units are only single wide). This lanai is twenty-five feet long by six feet wide and is accessible from the living room or master bedroom. The lanai has additional seating and an outside dining table for a romantic sunset dinner.
There is a complete modern kitchen (stocked with condiments, utensils, plates and glasses) and microwave, coffee and espresso makers, blender, and toaster. We have installed an on demand water heater that supplies continuous hot water as opposed to standard rental units with a small 10gal. water heater.
The rear bedroom has a double futon with a high quality mattress (not the usual cotton batting) and a room air conditioner. It also has floor to ceiling windows with views in two directions (including sunrise) and has a small lanai (standing only). This bedroom has its own cable TV/VCR, DVD. phone, stereo and computer. It also has its own bathroom and closet.
The living/dining room has a ceiling fan, bookcases, Cable 27” TV with VCR/DVD and a VCR/DVD library. In addition there is a stereo, record, CD, cassette players, plus a large collection of CDs, records, and cassettes. There is a couch/daybed in the living room that can accommodate one person for sleeping.
Haleiwa is 30-40 minutes from the airport and 45 minutes to Honolulu but a world apart. This is the "Real" Hawaii with empty beaches and parks. The beauty of the undeveloped mountains and countryside is an ever changing panorama of colors and light. Next door (two minute walk) is a large beach park(Haleiwa Alii Beach Park. Next to this park is a marina with charter fishing, jet skis, kayak rentals, whale watching cruises and Haleiwa Joe’s restaurant. Haleiwa town is a ten minute walk and has many interesting shops and restaurants and a free Surfing museum. A mile away is Waialua with public library, recreation center with free lighted tennis courts and free swimming pool. There is a farmer’s market on Sat. 8:30am.
Waimea Bay is 10 minute drive away (across the road from this beach is Waimea Falls Park is a botanical garden and Hawaiian cultural center where you can swim beneath a waterfall. Sunset Beach is 15 minutes and the Turtle Bay Resort is 20 minutes. library, Saturday farmers market (8:15 am) and a swimming pool and lighted tennis courts (free). We have prepared a guest guide that includes other places of interest on the North Shore and Honolulu.

Map & Owner's Profile
Why the Owner Chose Haleiwa
We have been going to Hawaii annually for over 40 years and staying at the Hiltons but decided to buy our own place which provides more comfort and convenience than Hilton suites. Being very familiar with Hawaii, we decided that the North Shore was the last true Hawaii with an easy access to a major city, Honolulu.
The Unique Benefits at this Condo
Our condo beach is the best in Hawaii. Uncrowded and protected by three reefs. Great snorkeling and shade trees on the lawn next to the beach. Great walking beach with two municipal parks and yacht harbor next door. Great sunsets and moonsets over the ocean.
The condo is extremely comfortable with floor to ceiling windows in all rooms and bedrooms and bath rooms being separated provides each of us with our own space. The condo is airy and cool most of the time. The large covered lanai has great ocean views and provides the option of outdoor dining.
Owner's Map of Haleiwa
We met in the 60s, both in graduate schools at the University of Michigan and after graduation moved to Southern California. David is lawyer and was General Counsel for hotel operation and international development for Hilton Hotels. Mara was a third grade training teacher. Traveled extensively, mostly Eastern Europe, USA, for 15 years before having our two daughters. Moved to Whidbey Island, WA in 1990 where both daughters finished middle and high school, going on to graduate schools. Now travel limited to Hawaii and Europe. Both retired and do volunteer work.

My husband, two grown children (in their 20's) and I had a lovely week at the condo. The best thing was that the beach was so very close and practically empty, almost like having a private beach. We all liked Haleiwa, which looks like it is still in the 1970's, but friendly, not-showy and low-key which is to our taste. Come here if you like slow and easy, not if you want modern and fancy life-styles. It was nice to have all of the amenities including a computer and kitchen gadgets. Dave's tips were good. We particularly liked Haleiwa Eats, the Thai restaurant for unusual, but spicy food. El Chollo was fair in terms of food. I think people go there to drink and it was rockin' on Sat night. We had to call Dave once, and he was very friendly and receptive. There were others to call on his call-list if we couldn't reach him. The property is well-maintained and the other residents are friendly. If you go, you will meet Todd, the friendly resident manager. I was never sure what exactly his responsibilities were. Maybe it could be defined if he covered 'outside/common area' issues or indoor issues as well. The inside decor is rather 'busy', but only because there is so much art and so many books. My only suggestion is to sort out and upgrade the beach equipment in the box on the lanai. There was one sand chair, not three. The boogie board was broken, but we found one on a beach and left it. The surf boards don't have a leash so we had to rent, but the prices were reasonable. A good cleaning and sorting would be a good idea. I think the owner plans to do that next month and we were at the end of the cycle. All in all. we had a good time and would consider returning.
Owner response:I agree with and appreciate these constructive comments. It is actually a helpful reminder to upgrade and sort out the "beach toys". We have been away for 6 months and have had many guests during this period and things do get broken or misplaced. We use the condo ourselves from Oct-Apr, with a break during the Christmas/New Years holidays. When I return in Oct, I make an inventory of what is needed and what should be discarded. For guests particularly interested in surfing, they should bring their own boards or rent. I will look into the best place to rent and put that info in our condo and North Shore guide. David

Hi David. There is nothing I would change, because it was perfect for our needs. Our favorite part was the beach, it's fantastic and when I get stressed I take myself there in my mind. Our new in-laws own a fancy condo at Turtle Bay and have offered it to us to use in the future. My husband and I agree that we'd rather pay to use your place than stay there. It is so isolated and the beach at Turtle Bay doesn't come close in comparison to the lovely beach at your place. It was great that you offer so many beach toys that we could use and we loved how close it was to town. We really enjoyed reviewing your great books and enjoying your art collection. You had all the amenities and we didn't need anything. Even your shirts came in handy for my husband! No doubt about it, we'll be staying there again and thanks for everything! Hi David, We had a great time. I loved the location of your condo, at the beach. Thank you for the tips of places to go and things to do. I used to live in Hawaii years ago, I return every year and it is always an aloha homecoming. I have family in Honolulu although I prefer the north shore of the island. They come and visit me when I am on the north shore and they also like that part of the island. The condo was beautiful and I really liked your collection of Hawaiian history. As I laid in bed in the a.m. and p.m. I loved listening to the surf upon awakening and when I went to sleep. Thank you for making available your home, Aloha, Kim Stayed May 13-24, 2010 (N. Just wanted to drop you a line and personally “Thank You” for sharing your wonderful home on Oahu. The time spent on the North Shore wasn’t long enough, so we are hoping for a return in the near future. Your condo art amazed the girls, kept them entertained for awhile. Again thanks for sharing, we couldn’t have had a better, more relaxing time. Mahalo The Yims

Aloha Johnsons! We had a wonderful time on the North Shore , thank you so much for the use of your condo – what a wonderful location! We had a great time with our kids, and took in most of your suggestions, the Markets, the Waimea Valley , we surfed or should I say tried to surf!, snorkeled, hiked Diamond Head for the sunrise, and had wonderful walks on the beach, along with lots of other activities. Can’t believe we are back in this cold and snow already. Have a wonderful winter in HI. Thanks again. Mahalo! J McDowells.

We so enjoyed our vacation here at the condo. Everynight we slept with the windows open for the tradewinds breezes. We even got to catch those notorious 15-20 waves. So awesome. Total different vibe from downtown Honolulu, remember you are in the country, a chicken lives next door & is not shy to warn you of sunrise! The condo itself is exactly as the pictures show. But the art collection & books are a WOW! We brought our twins who are 17 & they were speechless. Hard to get from 17 year olds. Haliewa is a historic town which is a must for shaved ice & snorkeling & turtle watching are terrific. We were able to catch the double rainbow after a warm rain. But the sunsets are a must & very beautiful. We tried to catch one every night! We felt relaxed & caught ourselves laughing quite a bit on this trip! P.S. you need a potato peeler & you might want to turn the refer door to the opposite side to access the kitchen easier. But a total pleasure to have you share your place.
