Stony seaboard, far and foreign, Stony hills poured over space, Stony outcrop of the Burren, Stones in every fertile place ...
From "Ireland with Emily" (Sir John Betjeman)
Ballyreen Cottage can be found down a private road leading to the sea, where you will, if you look closely, come across evidence of our ancestors. The gorge of Ballinalackan Castle, the Aran Islands and the fertile rock which is the Burren, with its wildflowers, subterranean rivers, and boulders left when the Ice Age vanished are just steps from the front gate. Tread the path of those who came before us, from the inhabitants of the ringforts, to those who tried to flee the famine on the Green Road, but be careful where you walk. The Burren is a special place, sacred to some, protected for us and for our heritors.
Study the map so lovingly prepared by Burren expert, Tim Robbins, a copy of which is hung in the cottage, and get to know the rugged moonscape. The closer you look, the more you will see. On a fine day, you will want to reach out and touch the Aran Islands and Connemara, they will seem that close, and the view will take your breath away. Watch the sun set over Galway Bay, and then look up as the stars appear on a fine night, like some random jewels scattered across the sky. Go to sleep to the sound of the surf crashing on the coast, wake up to the birdsong, and start the day once again.
If all this sounds too isolated for you, rest assured that the village of Doolin is just a few short miles away and noted for its traditional music which can be heard in O'Connor's, McGann's, and McDermott's Pubs. Pub grub can be had, and there are several fine restaurants all within walking distance of the village. A championship golf course awaits in Lahinch, with its beautiful blue-flag beach suitable not just for sunbathing, but for surfing as well, and home to SeaWorld for the children. The famous Cliffs of Moher are just a few miles away, and can be seen in the distance from the cottage. Walking tours of the Burren are available, ferries run from Doolin to the Aran Islands from Easter till the end of the summer, fishing is just off the rocks and the area is known for its underground caves which are a favourite with potholers. The spa town of Lisdoonvarna is just down the road, and nearby Fanore, also with a wonderful beach, offers pony trekking.
The cottage can accommodate four adults, or two adults and three children. In addition to the two double bedrooms, there is a sofa bed in the living area. Smoking outside only, please. No Pets. |
