About this property

The Karoline: Old World Charm In A 2 Bedroom 2 Bath Beauty By The Charles Bridge

This newly renovated, fully-equipped 2-bed and 2-bath apartment with a living room able to be converted into a bedroom on the 1st floor(2nd floor US) of a historical neo-gothic building just around the corner from the Charles Bridge is for up to 8 guests, and at the same time caters to a smaller, more demanding group or family that wants to have Old World style but in a modern, functioning flat. There are three connecting rooms: the master bedroom with king-size bed(180 cm wide), the living room/sitting room with fireplace(bio-ethynol means real flames but no smoke), cable TV, and a large pull-out sofa, and then the large bedroom with two king-size beds. These rooms all have their own entry/exit doors, so privacy is not a problem. The large master bathroom has a tub/shower, toilet, his and her vanity sinks, and a washer and dryer concealed behind a decorative side panel. The second smaller bath if also fully equipped, with a small sink, shower, and toilet, and both have heated floors. Complementary WiFi works throughout the flat. The fully-equipped kitchen is perfect for making large meals, or even just for a coffee and small breakfast in the morning. Iron and ironing board, all towels and washcloths, and extra bedding are of course provided. Smoking is not permitted in the flat, but we have a small balcony which is perfect for that.
We think that you will appreciate the level of detail that Mark & Mirka put into the flat, from the choice of linens for the beds and selection of furnishings (we have two art nouveau chairs in the kitchen) to the extensive restoration of the ceiling décor and the matching chandeliers. We have really focused on trying to preserve and enhance as many elements from the original construction as possible.

Lovely apartment in Old Town
Apartment is just as listed. Photos are very accurate. Beds were very comfortable. Communication with host was seamless and included a personal guide to get into the apartment and orient us. Host very thoughtfully included some nice "starters" - e.g. bottle of wine, butter for cooking, etc. Overall this was a lovely apartment in a very safe and quiet neighborhood within easy walking distance of all the major sites in Prague.

Outstanding rental in one of the world's most beautiful cities
We loved our place and appreciated all the touches that made it special by the owners. The location is ideal, just a few blocks from the river and the hub of the old town. It's a well-equipped, updated and beautiful apartment where you can tell a lot of care has been taken on the details. We were a family of four with two young adults and so the large BR with two beds worked great, along with the two bathrooms. The generosity of the owners to provide more than a few provisions in the fridge and even some homemade coffee cake upon arrival was exceptionally gracious. You can't go wrong booking this lovely place as your temporary home in Prague. Highly recommend.

Prague Old World Charm
We loved our stay in this beautifully decorated Prague apartment. It was conveniently located and was an easy walk to many attractions. The tram was nearby which was easy to use to get around the city. Our host was very helpful setting up our transportation to and from the hotel. The apartment was clean, beautiful and very comfortable. We would stay again and definitely recommend.

Beautiful location to experience Prague
The Karoline is a beauty in itself that nods to the overall spectacular views of Prague. The flat is very spacious and is in a great location for easy walks to everything you need - grocery, shopping, trams and local sights. The amenities provided make it very easy to have meals in the flat while also having great restaurants within walking distance. The security of the flat is very good and the building is quiet. Mark and his team are great with their communication both prior and during the stay and will arrange transportation both to and from the airport if needed. The reviews and pictures of this flat are what made us choose it for our trip and the reality of our experience was one of the best traveling both abroad and domestically in the US. The beauty of the architecture and furniture felt more like home for us than just staying in a rental.

Beautiful Stay in Prague
The apartment is spacious and beautiful. I felt like I had stepped back in time when buildings were built by artisans. The ceilings were spectacular. Thank you so much for the homemade apple strudel, it was enjoyed by all of us at breakfast. The owners left us some drinks, local breads and such to start our visit on the right foot. The apartment is kept warm and toasty on these cold winter days; just what you need when you visit the sites all day. Love the fireplace! Thank you!! I will stay here again when we come to Prague.

About the host

Hosted by Mark Grein

Host profile image
Mark Grein is originally from the U.S., but on a chance trip to Europe back in the nineties, he was enchanted by the magical allure of Prague and decided to set up shop here, right in the middle of central Europe not long after the Velvet Revolution. He and his wife Mirka are filmmakers, but decided to try their hand at renovation when they bought this beauty in the heart of the Old Town last year. They did much of the renovation work themselves, especially in restoring the original ceiling stucco decoration, spending many hours up on a ladder covered in wet plaster and paint, and with Mirka handmaking much of the decor, like the floral patterns on the fireplace mantle and cabinets.

Why they chose this property

We knew we had something special when we first set eyes on this diamond-in-the-rough. All of the doors in this residential building have wooden entrance doors or portals that are decorative pieces unto themselves. One inside the flat, we saw that the elaborate but faded ceiling decorations were just screaming to be restored, and the original owner had left many of the original details in this old place, such as doors, door handles, parquet floors, windows(including original glass in some of the windows-- look closely and you'll see the tell-tale 'waviness' in some of the panes). The layout was perfect--- three connected rooms, but all with their own entrances/exits, a large and separate kitchen, along with a small balcony. Located on the 1st floor of a neo-gothic buliding just around the corner from the famous Charles Bridge in the heart of the Old Town, but on a side pedestrian street, it just felt like the right place. We think you'll agree :)

What makes this property unique

As with all properties, 'genus loci' is the most important thing, and this flat has got it in large amounts. It is the perfect place to begin and end a walking tour of the beautiful city, and the quaint street has many great cafes, fantastic wine bars and restaurants, and even though it's close to the famous bridge, it's managed to hang to a lot of its local character.
