Why the Owner Chose Isle of Palms

My family is from Summerville SC which is 30 miles away. Before the days of air conditioning (I know--it was a long time ago!) lowcountry folks picked up stakes and moved to their beach houses or their mountain houses to escape the suffocating heat of the towns and cities.

We would move down looking like the Okies in my dad's green pickup truck, carrying all of our bedding, towels, beach chairs, the family dog and a nurse for us children.

In those days high tide came so close to the house that my mother could sit on the porch, watch 2 of the children playing the the gully and hear the baby when he woke up from his nap. Today you have to walk the length of a football field to get to the beach but it is certainly worth it!

The Unique Benefits at this House

Time on the beach and watching the ocean are always a great joy. Look for orange tape marking sea turtle nests and find out when they are expected to hatch. It's well worth staying up all night to help the little ones race to the open sea.

For families with young children we are a 5 minute walk from the IOP Recreation center with its tennis courts and play ground and gymnasium. They have many activities for families including Yoga classess for adults.

A
Wild Dunes Golf

Two wonderful public courses for local golf. One course has ocean view holes.

B
Fort Moultrie

Historic revolutionary war site

C
The City of Charleston

The Port City of Charleston has a charm all its own. Enjoy strolling in the Market Place or along High Battery. Visit some of the finest museum houses in the south and enjoy Charleston's unique cuisine at some of our delightful restaurants.

D
The Aquarium

There's nothing like the Charleston Aquarium to delight young and old alike, especially on a rainy day.

Owner's Map of Isle of Palms

Stanley Reahard is the oldest child of the original home owners: My parents bought this property when my Father was on a 30 day leave during WWII. After the war they built a small bungalow with a side porch. They later added a front porch, and a second floor with a large deck for enjoying the views in the evening. When hurricane Hugo destroyed the house in 1989, they rebuilt the current house which we have all enjoyed for the past 20 years. With 6 bedrooms, a wide front porch and two living rooms it has served our growing family very well.

In 2011-2012 the house has undergone a major renovation, updating the kitchens, the bathrooms, adding a huge deck upstairs.

In spite of all that it maintains its comfortable family feel and is great for multi-generational gatherings--the kind we alway enjoy each year with our own family.

Blue House Family Vacation

Guest: B-Daddy (Knoxville, Tn)
Date of Stay: 07/01/07 Review Submitted: 01/12/08

We had an absolutely wonderful time. My wife and I, with our entire family consisting of two sons and two daughters, along with their spouses or friends spent a week enjoying each other and the beach in July. The house was very comfortable and spacious. The screen porch is enormous, and provided us hours of pleasure. It also was secure enough to let our 2 year old grandaughter roam about freely. The house was very clean and homey, without being too pretentious, The owners are very friendly, and greeted us upon arrival. The waves were great for playing in, and the beach was clean. I will definitely be renting this place again. I have stayed in numerous rentals on the IOP for the last 15 years or so, and this ranks right at the top.

Owner response:Thanks for your kind words about the Blue House! We love it too and look forward to our return in the spring every year.

Family vacation destination

Guest: Mike & Diane R (Hendersonville, NC)
Date of Stay: 08/20/11 Review Submitted: 09/20/11

After some 7 rentals on Folly Beach, we decided to try an IOP rental. No regrets...should have done this sooner. The area is quieter & more refined. Our family has grown since the first group vacation. The "Blue House" was ideal for our 3 generations. Each family had their own full bath...a nice touch of privacy. The bathrooms are all new; beautiful ceramic tile, trim, granite countertops, Kohler fixtures & glass shower doors. The furnishings are beach house 'eclectic' but clean & comfortable. The kitchen was well stocked with equipment. The beautiful, expansive screen porch + our toddlers meant we cooked many meals here. We usually came to Charleston in May; this was our first Aug trip =weather hot but AC / ceiling fans worked fine & surf was like a bath. Hurricane Irene passed offshore=some riptides, rain & some performances by daring surfers. The house is built to post-Hugo code & is impressively sturdy in its construction. Even forced indoors, the house has 4 TVs so all were happy. The "Kids Charade" game was so funny /an absolute delight playing with the tots. The linens were all pre-wrapped & of a nice quality. The towels were plush and plentiful. The two nice outside/under house showers have both hot & cold & were appreciated when sweaty & sandy & coming from the beach. The bedrooms are nicely decorated...lovely hand painted / crafted items in each & even homemade quilts in half of them. The negatives: There are ants in the dunes, back yard & under house patio. While annoying, they should not deter you from coming here. The only other criticism would be that the lower 'king' bedroom needs a small chest of drawers. Considering that 2 adults would be in here, clothing storage space is needed. We were a tad disappointed with the restaurants. Huck's, while not picturesque, does have fine food (have the homemade ice cream sampler). Luke & Ollies has some nice pizza. Acme Low Country was a major disappointment & our group is easy to please. The grandkids loved the "Splash Island" water park at the Mt. Pleasant county park / playground. It was clean & lifeguards everywhere. Also enjoyed was the beach, nearby Rec. Dept playground, the beach, the aquarium (pet the baby stingrays=feel like velvet!), the beach, the waterfront park, the beach, the Children's Museum of the Lowcountry & did I mention the beach. We are formerly from Long Island, NY & are now in the western NC mountains. We need our 'beach fix'. For all this was the best family trip ever!

Owner response:Dear Michael--thanks so much for your kind words about your stay at the Blue House. Glad you all enjoyed it. Just sorry about the restaurants. I should have recommended some to you. The Long Island Cafe in the Red and White shopping center has the best fried oysters on the planet (no great atmosphere but good food) Morgan Creek Grill is also usually good--it's on the end of the IOP by the marina and overlooks the Inland Waterway. So maybe on your next visit you can try those. Again, thanks for your gracious comments. We plan to redo the kitchen and a few other thing this winter. We combat those ants every year and nothing seems to work! I hate them too... Best regards always, Stanley Reahard

A Family Vacation to Remember!

Guest: Kitsy (Lawrence, Kansas)
Date of Stay: 12/27/09 Review Submitted: 01/30/10

This was our first time renting a beach home and we were very pleased. We took our children, their children, and my mother-in-law for the week after Christmas and we had a fabulous time. The two floors each with their own living area and three bedrooms were perfect for our situation. Everything we needed in the kitchen was there and more! The large screened in porch was perfect for the grandchildren to run and play and for the adults to sit and enjoy. The view of the ocean is breathtaking! We loved watching big ships come and go in the distance and the sunrise in the mornings was incredible. We loved walking across the long grassy back yard to the beach and playing with the tide was great fun for those of us from Kansas! Isle of Palms is a lovely community and very close to Charleston where we spent time doing the "touristy" things. The end of the week came far too soon and we look forward to when we can return.

a perfect family week

Guest: Maggie and Terry (Chatham, NJ)
Date of Stay: 04/04/09 Review Submitted: 04/13/09

We were looking for a place to meet family, and have the children enjoy some family time, but have the freedom to ride bikes on their own and walk to the stores, restaurants. We found it all at the Blue House, and were more than pleased at the house and location. We hope to be back very soon, and are so grateful that the Reahards shared their home with us.

Awesome ocean views!

Guest: Gwennie (Evansville, IN USA)
Date of Stay: 03/21/09 Review Submitted: 03/30/09

Older beach home with character. Great view of ocean! One can watch an angry sea or one that is smooth as glass from the screened porch. Views from 2nd floor rooms are terrific. Would have liked a deck. Lots of beds and 2 living areas. New gas grill. More than enough cookware, dinnerware and flatware for those who like to cook. Back yard is great for kids and affords easy access to the beach. It is a short trip to shopping, sightseeing, the Aquarium, great dining and more. Would stay here again.

Good location

Guest: papa-one (colorado)
Date of Stay: 11/03/08 Review Submitted: 11/18/08

This property is good for access to the beach and has nice views. The housekeeping was lacking a little as we arrived late into the evening and there was not even any toilet paper in any of the bathrooms. Not knowing the area and being after 11pm it made for a challenging night for 8 people. We called the property manager, but received no call back until about 11am the next day. By then, we had driven around town and found a store to get basic necessary items, including soap for the bathrooms, which there was none of in the house. Home is nice but not excellent. For off season rate it is a fair value. No propane gas for the grill and few towels for the guests made for challenges that one would not have expected to encounter in a luxury home. We would stay again, but our expectations would be different.

Owner response:Thank you for apprising me of this situation. We make every effort to make sure that bathrooms and kitchens are well stocked and are sorry you had a problem. We have discussed it with our managment crew and have been assured that this will not happen again.

Love The Blue House

Guest: LesW (York, SC)
Date of Stay: 06/28/08 Review Submitted: 09/18/08

We have stayed at The Blue House for our vacation for the past 3 years and have it already booked for our 4th. We have been vacationing at Isle of Palms since 1997 and find that this house is in a great location. It's a good size with plenty of room for our family of 9 - parents, 2 sisters, 1 brother, 2 husbands and 2 teenagers. :-) We love the porch with the large tables which we use everyday for our breakfast and dinner. The space underneath is great for storage of chairs, coolers, canopys, etc. as well as just hanging out with family & friends (we missed the hamock this year!) Location on the beach is great which is where we spend our days. Everyone in our family loves the beach and having this great house to call "ours" for a week helps to make special memories that we will cherish forever!
