Yes, our Condo UNIT ITSELF is Actual OCEANFRONT (unlike 80% of the other so-called 'oceanfront' listings wherein they count the condo building as oceanfront, but their unit is located on the side of the building, affording ONLY A VIEW of the ocean). Make sure any other condos you are considering are IN FACT RIGHT ON THE OCEAN. Consumer group research showed OVER 80% of condos advertised as 'oceanfront' or the like, were NOT. The building was on the ocean, but the units advertised as “oceanfront” either faced the back side, or offered just a view of the ocean. Our unit IS RIGHT THERE, literally fronting the ocean--just 50 feet away.

You will have the peaceful sound of the ocean crashing ashore just 50 feet from your fully-equipped, lighted lanai; a restful sound that resonates throughout the spacious living and dining areas. You will breathe in the gorgeous unobstructed daytime view of all of Maalaea Bay, Molokini crater crescent, Kihei, and Mount Haleakala. Stunning sunrises over Mount Haleakala (for those few willing to get up at that hour, it is worth it).
The evenings are just as special; enjoy the soft romance of warm breezes, the tiki-torch-lit shoreline, the sight of a CLEAR MOON-RISE over majestic Mount Haleakala, the light shimmering across the bay.
You will appreciate this one-of-a-kind location. Our Maalaea Bay Home is on the one and only residential street in Maalaea Harbor; it is called Hauoli (Hawaiian for happy or delightful) Street. Enjoy strolling down this quiet tree-lined street, listening to the birds, and inhaling the delicate fragrance of plumeria blossoms.
At the end of the road is Heycraft Park, just a short walk from our home. This is where you will either enjoy swimming in sparkling clear waters or start your walk along four miles of beautiful, uncrowded, sandy beach bordering the Kealia National Wildlife Refuge. Condo to park is 1/4 mile walk, or drive since there is a small lot at the park.
The wildlife refuge was established in 1992 and is home to endangered native water birds, and hosts migratory ducks and shorebirds in fall, winter, and spring. This refuge provides 700 acres of some of the last remaining natural wetland habitat in the State of Hawaii. Kealia Pond is nearly 250 acres when full. The refuge is adjacent to Kealia Beach, which is a nesting ground for the endangered hawksbill turtle.
More than 31 species of birds, such as the endangered Hawaiian stilt and coot, and migrant waterfowl and shorebirds such as the Pacific golden plover use this refuge. You can approach the refuge from your walk along the ocean, or use the roadway to access an interpretive kiosk and boardwalk along the beach and refuge mudflats.
In summer months, the Refuge Pond shrinks, and many more shorebirds congregate here to take advantage of food exposed as the pond recedes. As the pond shrinks, fish are crowded into the remaining water, making them easy prey for black-crowned, night herons.
Another advantage of the CENTRAL LOCATION OF MAALAEA BAY is the proximity of so many attractions, all within easy walking distance. The AIR CONDITIONING is brand new, and ducted from outside to BOTH the front and rear of our condominium, with INDIVIDUAL REMOTE CONTROLS for each room, affording desired, quiet comfort. FREE BROADBAND Internet plug-in cable hook up is provided for your convenience. Compare to all other one bedroom units: most have a single 'window shaker' machine air conditioning only.
We have maintained our home as a SMOKE-FREE, pet-free environment for the enjoyment of our guests. Please do not smoke on the lanai inasmuch as the smoke travels to other units. There is no smoking on any of the grounds.
Note on booking: Please email us and do NOT RELY upon the VRBO automated pricing or booking system as it cannot be programmed properly (e.g. it cannot decide upon which of our three alternatives for cleaning costs). We MUST have it on site b/c otherwise VRBO penalizes us in our search rankings if we took it out. Same for using VRBO emails. Gwen has her psychology practice in Alberta--and while she generates her CDs and articles and books in Alberta, MUCH of her inspiration is drawn from the dose of spiritual refreshing she enjoys during each visit to our peaceful paradise getaway. We trust that our condo--and your experiences here--will work their magic on you as well.
Why the Owner Chose Maalaea:
We loved this peaceful, quiet setting--away from the tourists who crowd the better-known areas such as Lahaina, Kaanapali, Kihei, Wailea, and so forth. And yet, with this panoramic view and four miles of undeveloped beach nearby, we are peacefully isolated on a dead-end road just a short walk away to a park that adjoins a wildlife refuge that is your upland 'development' all the way to Sugar Beach. Very few on our beaches, other than the locals, who use the park on weekends and vacations. Maybe best of all, our condo unit is TRULY OCEANFRONT--a strong arm could toss a rock from our lanai into the ocean. Who could ask for more? By comparison, we recently took 29 minutes to drive through Kihei--and some parts of the day it is like a rolling parking lot to get in the line of cars headed for the ever-popular (and always over-populated) spots of Lahaina and Kaanapali. When you see us on the map, you can see how easy it is to get out and about on the island. We are close to the main highway, yet tucked away on a dead-end road with no traffic. Plus, Maalaea Kai has a greater percentage of owner-occupied units, which means fewer crowds doing the tourist thing. Our land is owned by our owners, unlike many other condos on our roadway (e.g. the two buildings on either side of us) where the condo unit 'owners' must pay rent each month to the land owner. Bottom-line of this is that we, as owners at Maalaea Kai, are much more likely to vote to put money into building & grounds improvements and maintenance. Hence, our building is in top shape, and likewise for our grounds.
The Unique Benefits at this Condo:
On our first visit to Maalaea Kai, we were renters. Nearing sunset, the condo manager lit all of the Tiki Torches along the ocean bulkhead. Waving palms, the torches, the ocean, and the colors of the sky. With the sun setting on the clouds and on Haleakala, and just the sounds of the ocean, it was PURE MAGIC for us! We know you will love it too.
