Biggar farmhouse description

This lovely stone-built farmhouse dates from the 19th Century and forms part of a working farm, built on the site of a Roman encampment.

The two storey, fully centrally heated property has large rooms providing comfortable, spacious accommodation. The big farmhouse kitchen is well equipped for large family dinners and the dining area provides a more formal setting. The lounge has a log burning stove for extra cosiness in the evenings and three sofas for relaxing. Satellite TV is included.

The charming, good sized rooms easily accommodate 5 adults and there is a family bathroom up-stairs and a shower-room/toilet downstairs.

Kirkhouse Farmhouse is surrounded by beautiful Scottish countryside only 30 miles from Edinburgh on the edge of the hamlet of Dolphinton - between West Linton, one of the most beautiful villages in Scotland - and Biggar, a small market town full of history and character. A large private garden leads directly onto the estate, which offers 300 acres of mixed woodland, heather hillside, wildlife habitat, picturesque streams and farmland grazing - a miniature of the Scottish Borders landscape.

The location is ideal for visiting central Scotland and guests day-trip to the Borders, the Dumfries coast, Glasgow, Edinburgh and up to Stirling and St Andrews.

Carbon Offsetting: White Hill Estate contains a wide variety of woodland and we are happy to discuss dedicated tree planting to offset the impact of our guests' travel.

Horse Accommodation: White Hill is home to several horses, and those wishing to bring their own horse with them to enjoy quality hacking with spectacular views are very welcome. 20 x 40 m outdoor, all weather arena. Please contact us to discuss grazing and loose box arrangements. *Full groom's service also available*.

Falconry: For those with their own hawk or falcon, the estate provides a rich and varied hunting landscape. Please contact us to discuss your specific requirements.

We have now stayed 3 times in this fantastic farmhouse. It is so peaceful and relaxing that we find it the perfect place to de-stress. The farmhouse itself is very spacious, there is a wonderful log burning stove in the comfortable and tasteful lounge (lots of interesting books to dip into) its huge – there are 3 full size sofas around the fire, and even with the big formal dining table at the other end of the room there is still loads of room to spare. The bedrooms are large and very comfortable. One of the best features is the kitchen which has a big chunky kitchen table so it’s great to open a bottle of wine and do a bit of cooking together. We enjoy hanging around the farm (built on a Roman camp), watching the horses and sheep. The views all around are stunning onto hills and big skies – lots of birdlife to see. On a clear night the stars are fantastic. The kids love paddling in their wellies in the stream. There are some lovely walks around the farm estate. There is even a challenging walk followed by a scramble up onto White Hill (owned by the farm). At the summit there is a 360 degree stunning view (and you can understand why the Romans chose this location). There is a town (Biggar) close by with a good supermarket, pubs and restaurants and interesting shops and galleries. The owners are a pleasure to deal with. We will be going again. Thoroughly recommended.

The old farmhouse lies in a beautiful setting among the hills and pastureland of the Scottish countryside. The owners have done a terrific job of restoring and modernizing. The house is clean and comfortable with a large farmhouse kitchen. The living area has two sofas, a dining room table and a nice fireplace that we enjoyed on a cool rainy day there. A nice touch on our arrival was finding a bottle of wine and some snack crackers on the kitchen table. Located about 30 minutes from Edinburgh the farmhouse is a good location for using as a base for touring the area, walking or just relaxing. We enjoyed our visits with the owners Sam and Deborah. They are a go od source of information about dining choices and also about the surrounding area. We enjoyed our holiday there and highly recommend it. We live in Texas so I don’t know if we will be back in this area again but if we are we will certainly want to stay here.

Recommended for: Romantic getaway, pet owners, sightseeing, age 55+, families with teenagers.

Absolutey amazing holiday! Perfect location, house extremely homely and comfortable. Huge garden, ideal for young children as my children were never out of it! We only spent £40 all week as did not need to venture far . . .the estate itself offers enough for an ideal holiday if you like the countryside, walking and outdoor activity. We took our childrens pony and we were pleased we did, the hacking is fabulous and every day we walked for miles, enjoying the breathtaking scenery, wildlife (we seen deer, many birds of prey and other birds, squirrels etc). So peaceful! We also took oor mountain bikes and biked for miles along the remote country roads and through little villages. Local towns biggar and west Linton were lovely and have good play areas for children. The people are friendly. Deb and Sam were great hosts and could not have been more welcoming and helpful, especially given that we took our pony. Nothing was a problem. Our dog tess came with us too and she had a great time and had a fantastic time, ideal for dog walkers. Would recommend to anyone who enjoys the countyside and outdoors, it is like a different world. We will definitely be going back very soon!!

This property is one of the best self-catering units we have ever rented - and we have rented many in all parts of Europe and North America. It was better than we had expected - impeccably clean and comfortable. Close to Edinburg, to golf courses in the Borders and East Lothian. We enjoyed the casual elegance of the place, the wonderful large kitchen and the hospitality of our hosts, Sam and Debs, who answered all of our questions about the property and the region. We thoroughly recommend Kirkhouse Farmhouse. Great Scottish hospitality and we hope to go back soon.

My family and I immensely enjoyed our stay in this beautiful, remote place - a 19th century cottage with mod cons (dishwasher, etc.) , very well equipped , clean and comfortable, with great attention to detail (e.g. curtains and matching cushions, etc.). White Hill Estate, which Kirkhouse Cottage is a part of, provides excellent possibilities to roam around the countryside. Sam and Deborah gave us a warm welcome and were always of service, their dog Tallis is a favourite with all guests. The cottage - though away from it all - is just a 40-minutes drive from Edinburgh, about 10 minutes from Peebles, a busy market town on the River Tweed and about 50 minutes from St. Mary's Loch ( another place we would recommend ). All in all, we would highly recommend Kirkhouse Cottage and hope to spend another happy week there in the not too distant future.

We have just returned from a wonderful week staying in Kirkhouse and we were all sad to say goodbye. We were made to feel very at home and very welcome by the cottage owners - nothing was too much trouble. Our daughter is 21 months old and she loved exploring the enclosed garden and seeing all the animals on the farm. The cottage has everything you could wish for including amazing views and comfortable beds! The cottage is only approximately half an hour from Edinburgh and was in a perfect location for visiting all that the area has to offer - Rosslyn Chapel, Edinburgh Zoo, New Lanark were all great places to visit (although Rosslyn Chapel was not really the place for a young child). Our friends stayed with us overnight and they were also very impressed with the cottage and the estate. I would recommend this cottage to friends and family it was truly a magical place to stay.

Recommended for: Romantic getaway, pet owners, sightseeing, families with young children.

About the owner: We are both business people and have also become farmers. We keep and train horses and we love living in such a wonderful rural setting, but with very easy access to the city for work and getting a 'cultural fix' every now and then.

                          Why the Owner Chose Biggar:
We first visited this farm on one of the worst winter's days in ages. We walked up the hill in a strong wind and horizontal sleet - we came back down the hill totally exhilarated and in awe of the beautiful setting. Since we fell in love with the place in the worst of weathers, we realized that it would be amazing in good weather and it is. There is something special about White Hill. Guests call it 'magical'. Being here is relaxing, calming and fun. Many of our guests come back again and again and think of it as their special retreat to unwind from busy lives.

The Unique Benefits at this Farmhouse:
We do not allow pesticide on our land, so there is abundant wild-life. Its an ideal location for nature lovers, ecologists and for children to explore and learn about the natural world.
