Dewees Beach Retreat: Charlotte's Pearl; Ocean Side of Island
- Minimum stay:3-7 nights
- Internet:Yes
- Pets allowed:No
- Wheel chair accessible:Yes
Charlotte's Pearl is a pristine barrier island retreat with one of the most beautiful beaches in the southeast. Our home is one of only 60 houses on this 1200 acre island. Our house is located near a beach access path which allows for an easy walk to the beach or a short golf cart ride. Most of the two and a half mile long island is untouched by development and over half in permanent conservation. You are often the only ones on the beach. Wildlife abounds on the island and includes deer, water fowl and migrating birds. The two tidal lakes on the island provide great fishing, crabbing, clamming and shrimping. However, just because you feel like you are worlds away from the stress you left behind, you are only 20 minutes from shopping, great restaurants, golf and the romantic city of Charleston via our comfortable Dewees Island ferry. Dolphins often escort the ferry to and from the island.
The custom built elevated second row home provides a wonderful private two acre oasis on the edge of a maritime forest with lake and marsh views. The sights and sounds of nature dominate. You feel like you are staying in your own private tree house with the closest visable home on the other side of the lake. The floor plan is inverted to allow maximum advantage of the marsh and lake views from the living areas and wrap around covered screened porch on the top floor. Each bedroom on the second level opens to a covered screened porch. Both master bedrooms have thier own private screened porch. From the rooftop observation deck, the views of the ocean and intercoastal waterway are magnificent.
As our guest you are able to use all the ammenities of the Huyler House such as the wonderful pool area and tennis courts. The Huyler is a magnificent lodge that serves as the center of the community.
Ferry rides cost $16/round trip/person.

This property is nested between the colorful greenery of the saltmarsh and the sea. When you walk into the house, you will be drawn to the second level's great room and open floor plan. It is surrounded with floor to ceiling glass doors that open onto large screened in porches. The rocking chairs and hammock invite you to open a cold drink, take a deep breath and RELAX while becoming a part of the colorful landscape. This home is very clean, well equipped with kitchen supplies, serving pieces and clean, crisp linens. It is perfect for entertaining a crowd, and there are many seating areas inside and out. There is a large, comfortable hammock on the porch, and in the mornings we saw deer walking through to the marsh area. This is also a great observation area for bird watching, and we saw a bald eagle, an osprey, and many other grand birds. The rooftop "crows nest" is also a great lookout to get a 360 view of the island. The bedrooms are on the first level and the two master suites have their own private porches, while the other two share a porch. The beds are very comfortable and the master suite has a cute little outdoor room with a rug and futon. This home is located a short walk from the beautiful beaches. There are two golf carts that accomodate exploring, fishing trips, or traveling to the pool or tennis courts. We love this house and will be back. It is a good place to rejuvenate your soul and the owner was trustworthy and very kind.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, people with disabilities, tourists without a car, age 55+, romantic getaway, girls getaway.

Our visits to Dewees and Charlotte's Pearl (#51)have become somewhat of a tradition. We love so much about this special place; we love its natural habitat, the quietness of the island, the uncluttered and unspoiled beaches, the long walks most often seeing no one and the opportunity to gather my family in a week where we can forget yesterday and tomorrow and focus on living today. We come to relax, to join hands and to catch up with each's busy lives. Good food, good coffee, good books and good music - life is good. We love having our children and grandchildren share this week with us. Despite there now being eight of us, we never feel crowded and we enjoy being together, in small groups for play, for games or quiet time spent reading and reflecting. One of the very special qualities of Charlotte's Pearl ( #51) is it's ability to be open for gatherings such as our family meals; intense privacy as well as shared times for play and conversing is always available on the many screened porches. We are a family of cooks and meal times have an even more special meaning. Charlotte's Pearl is beach casual and yet she has a touch of class. I sometimes feel she is smiling from her vaunted peaks. We enjoy her character and her ability to make each of us a part of her history. Most of all - we love the ability to escape our daily lives and to enjoin with our spirits and souls, rejuvenating and renewing until we can gather again. Though we do not know the Plemmons family, we appreciate their hospitality in making our respite at Dewees an extraordinary time.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 2/2

We all had a great time on Dewees Island last week! It makes it quite hard to get back to the grind here in Atlanta when thinking about relaxing on Dewees. You certainly went well beyond what any other leasing agents have done before acting as concierge, fishing guide, naturalist, social director, tour guide, and even bellhop! Jack, Edward and I will definitely return to visit soon!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

Dewees Island is an Amazing place to stay. The Charlotte's Pearl is by far our favorite vacation spot. The home is lovely with nice large bedrooms and plenty of space to relax. The home is very clean and modern. It has everything you'll need for a perfect vacation. We enjoyed riding on the golf carts, fishing, swimming in the pool, and visiting the private beach. There is an abundance of Nature to behold on your visit. We saw Gorgeous Sunsets, Deer, Raccoons, Birds, Alligators, Hermit Crabs, and Sand Crabs while exploring the Island. My 5 year old son loves Dewees Island. He enjoys looking for Mud Minnows and Visiting the Nature Center. Staying in the Charlotte's Pearl is definately a little piece of Heaven on Earth.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 3/3
