Casa Zorro - Caribbean Beach Home in Puerto Viejo
Year Purchased: 2000
Why the Owner Chose Puerto Viejo
The Caribbean coast of Costa Rica is so rich in diversity with miles of unspoiled and uncrowded beaches. While certainly not remote and isolated, it is refreshing to visit a coastline that is unmarred with high-rise hotels and all-inclusive resorts. The area is stunningly beautiful, and the people are very friendly and helpful.
The Unique Benefits at this House
Staying in a private home is so much better than checking into a hotel that you may not be familiar with. And the house is so close to the beach as well as to the stores, restaurants, and shops. It is literally a 2 minute walk to the beach and a 5 minute walk to the center of town.
Owner's Map of Puerto Viejo
My very first trip to Costa Rica was on a cruise. The port of call was Limon, and I was so impressed, I thought if I ever retire, Costa Rica would be the place I'd want to call home. When I finally did retire, I moved to Costa Rica and fell in love with the Caribbean coast. I purchased land in Puerto Viejo and eventually built Casa del Zorro. I hope you love the area, and enjoy my home, which I happily share with you.

Attentive and kind host + Great beach house in the perfect location

By the end of this month (December, 2011) I'll have stayed here for 4 months with my 2 small children and my husband. When I first arrived I didn't have a bike, but that's ok because Casa Zorro is very close to town. It's also very close to a small beach that is great for kids as a barrier is formed by reefs to curb the occasionally very rough waves. I SCUBA dive here, but haven't tried surfing yet. During the course of our stay, I have encountered several situations I was unaccustomed to (some of which scared me) and Tony was very prompt in helping, sending help from the management company when necessary. We arrived in Puerto Viejo in August. The only things I didn't like were remedied while we had to stay somewhere else for the month of October. There were several changes when we came back with "new" couches and a security wall being the biggest ones. The only reason the place isn't perfect is because we had a bike stolen, there aren't enough towels and the cleaning lady really only comes once a week even when we confirmed twice with the property management that she would come every 3-4 days. It is our fault for leaving the bike out. The prowlers when we first arrived should be eradicated by the new wall. Granted it is less natural looking, but it beats having to shutter everything at dark and come inside at dusk. The noise from the clubs gets to me sometimes, but sometimes I like it :) I would return to Casa Zorro without question if I wasn't moving into my own place in Playa Chiquita. We're sold on the area- beach in the front yard, rainforest in the back. You can't beat it in my opinion!
Owner response:I want to thank Allison and David for their extended stay at Casa Zorro. They endured some major renovation work during their 4 month stay and never complained. I would like to clarify that the reason they had to move to another location in October was because the house had been reserved previously by another party. The bike was stolen because it was left out and unlocked at night. And just so no one misunderstands, the last part of the review about beach in the front yard and rain forest in the back is in reference to the property they bought in Playa Chiquita.

This was our third trip to Puerto Viejo and we specifically wanted to be within close walking distance of town and the beach. Staying at Casa del Zorro was perfect in that regard! Equally so, the owner was quick to respond to any and all our concerns -- the first couple of nights we had a huge number of flying termites in the house (which we initially thought to be mosquitos). Once reported, the owner had the property management fumigate and put up mosquito nettings over all the beds. Since there were more than a fair amount of mosquitos present as well, the netting was well appreciated and faithfully used. Other issues that popped up -- broken toilet handle and a fan that stopped working -- were dealt with quickly and efficiently. Tony, the owner, also provided us with cleaning service twice a week -- and the maid always did a very thorough job and was very pleasant and friendly. A most delightful surprise was the opening a new bakery just two doors away from Casa del Zorro, as well as, the close proximity to Stash’s Con Fusion. Also loved the young bicyclist who delivered fresh fruits and vegetables to our door each week. The only complaint we had was the condition of the living room furniture -- it really needed to be replaced. The couch frames were broken which made any prolonged sitting extremely uncomfortable and the numerous throw pillows weren’t so much worn as they was just dirty. For much of our stay, we draped clean sheets over the furniture. Safety is always a concern but I must say we felt very safe at Casa del Zorro. We had nary a problem using common safety precautions. Our recommendations for restaurants: Stash’s Con Fusion, Cafe Rico, Bread & Chocolate, Amimodo’s, Tex-Mex, and Las Carnidas Soda.
Owner response:I'm pleased to let everyone know that the living room furniture has been replaced with two sofas that are much more comfortable.

This house was perfect for at least 5 people and possibly 7. It is right around the corner from the main road through puerto viejo and is minutes to many beaches. It was very well kept and had everything you needed, kitchen supplies, towels, sheets, and cozy items such as fans throughout the house and TV and sofas. We all felt at home and were safe and comfortable. We plan on staying here again! Thank you Tony!

We just came home from the beautiful Puerto Viejo and had to adjust back to real life. We loved the house, it was spacious, comfortable, and we had everything we needed. The location is great, there is a bakery around the corner, close to town, surrounded by wildlife/plants, all in all it was just an amazing place. We recommend this place to anyone who would like to be within walking distance to anything in Puerto Viejo, including the bank, shops, restaurants, etc. Also, it is quiet and no one is making any loud or distracting noises. It is a very calming place that one can actually take the time to relax themselves. We would do it again if we had the choice to come back so soon! Tony, thank you for sharing your house with us!
Owner response:Thank you for your kind words about Casa Zorro. It is great being so close to the conveniences of banking, shops, groceries, and restaurants, yet in a quiet and peaceful part of Puerto Viejo.
