Luxurious Double Room with a Seaview, Between Nice and Antibes
- Minimum stay:N/A
- Internet:Yes
- Pets allowed:No
- Wheel chair accessible:No
Le Refuge offers bed and breakfast in an elegantly furnished double room, with a large and exclusive bathroom. The building, that used to be a monastery, is situated in a quiet street in the medieval village of Haut-de-Cagnes. Some say it is 'magic', coming here is like walking a couple of hundred years back in time. Yet, the village has around 10 restaurants - one of them with a Guide Michelin star.
The 'Le Refuge' B&B guest apartment is part of a larger home. The room has a beautiful sea view and a separate entrance. There is a very comfortable double bed (160/200 cm), a dining table for two, an armchair, and a television.
The spacious bathroom is equipped with a bathtub, a shower, 2 wash basins, a bidet and toilet.
There is no kitchen, but the apartment is equipped with a refrigerator/freezer, a microwave, and a kettle. Continental breakfast is included, other meals possible on demand.
There is a parking in the village (euros 42 per week). There are also free parking places available around the castle (car is not needed).
Haut de Cagnes, a medieval hilltop village between Nice and Antibes. 12 min to the airport. 20 min walk to the beach. 5 min to grocery stores, banks and post office in Cagnes sur Mer. 10 min by car to St Paul de Vence and the medieval city of Vence. 20 min to Nice, Cannes and Antibes. 30 min to Grasse and Italy. 17 golf courses in within 30 min drive. 1.5 hours drive to skiing.

Never been to Nice, France and looking for a nice place to stay which was convenient and affordable took a little bit of a challenge. My desires were all met when I found the write up for "Le Refuge." A few email exchanges between myself and Willy-Maria, and I was all set for a nice apartment in which to stay while my wife and I visited Nice and Cannes. Willy-Maria was a delightful person and her breakfast treats were nice to begin the day. The apartment is on top of a hill with a beautiful view. The free shuttle up and down the hill was very convenient. From the bottom, for 1 euro, you could travel in all directions very easily. I would recommend the restaurant Jimmy's at the top of the hill, the breakfast was good and Willy-Maria was able to answer all our questions. The apartment has a nice shower and bath...to include a washer and dryer for longer stays. My wife and I would stay there again for when we return to Nice. Thanks Willy-Maria for the opportunity to spend two days in the apartment....Recommended for: Romantic getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: Thank you for your nice review, I am glad that your stay was pleasant! Willy-Maria

We stayed two nights in this memorable place. The room was comfortable and especially the big bathroom. A fridge and washer/dryer are included and the internet worked well. The village is amazing - a preserved slice of 16th century life. It was wonderful to walk to restaurants (we ate at Jimmy'z and at the restaurant near the B&B). Both were very good and had great atmosphere. Willy-Maria was very hospitable and responsive. Her breakfasts were the best - yummy bakery goods, jam, butter, cheese with hot coffee and juice. It was so convenient to pick it up from just outside. We hope to return again to this magical place. The only caution would be I would not recommend driving to the B&B. We did so once and it was very stressful - very narrow and winding. If you have a car, I would park in the convenient underground parking garage at the beginning of the hill village and walk through the village (about 10 minutes) (or take the free bus). We did this (walked) with our luggage on the way back and it was much easier than maneuvering the car through the hill top streets. The other caution is that there is a spiral staircase to the apartment so you must be able to get your luggage up that. Only an issue if you have very big suitcases (like we did :-) ).Recommended for: Romantic getaway, tourists without a car, age 55+, sightseeing.
Owner response: Dear Alice, Thank you for your nice review. Once you get use to our narrow roads it is not a problem any more but I can well understand that it can be for people who are not used to narrow streets. As for your suitcases in futher I would suggest to take less luggages with you as there is a washing machine and a dryer in "Le Refuge". It was nice having you both and may be we will see you again in Haut-de-Cagnes! Willy-Maria

My husband and I stayed in this lovely flat for a few days on our three-stop journey through France, and Haut de Cagnes was definitely the crowning jewel of our stay. The village is a little gem seemingly from a fairy tale, and our stay at Le Refuge was just fabulous. The rooms were the most spacious and comfortable, yet our stay was least expensive here, even including a lovely breakfast basket outside our room each morning. Being able to laundry here was also highly advantageous, and super-convenient. I would advise against bringing a car to this area because with a free shuttle up and down the hill, and super-economical bus fares putting you within a hour's ride to pretty much anywhere you want to go for only 1 euro, why would you want to travel any other way? If you're planning on visiting the Riviera, this location can't be beat, the price is right, and the ambience is magical. And did I mention the awesome food? All the restaurants we tried here had great food and were well-priced, but we visited "Le Jimmy's" at the top of the hill by the Chateau Grimaldi twice for the best pizza we've ever had. Missing every minute of our trip in Cagnes as I write this!Recommended for: Romantic getaway, tourists without a car, sightseeing.
Owner response: Dear Lance and Erin, Thank you for taking the time to send me such a nice review. It was nice having you both here. You forgot to tell about our bicycles in Cagnes-sur-Mer, which you can rent to go to the beach and back or to Nice and Antibes. Hope to hear from you again. Greatings from sunny Haut-de-Cagnes! Willy-Maria

Le Refuge is a perfect setting for enjoying the ambience of a truly medieval village. Located a five minute walk from the Grimaldi castle, and surrounded by a photographer's dream, Le Refuge provides a serene and comfortable home base for exploring the Cote d'Azur. My husband & I spent almost two weeks over Easter this past month enjoying the hospitality & personal attention provided by our gracious hostess. The spacious rooms and extra amenities were most welcome as was the abundant breakfast basket awaiting us daily and accommodating our travel plans! The nearby parking was secure and convenient. The restaurants in the village were excellent..We especially enjoyed "Entre Cour et Jardin", and "L'Etalier"..but a glass of wine on the bench in our little square at sunset (our hostess' recommendation!) was wonderful! Thank you for making our trip so memorable! We will recommend your lovely bed and breakfast to all our friends!Recommended for: Romantic getaway, adventure seekers, tourists without a car, age 55+.
Owner response: Thank you Joe and Vee, it was a pleasure to have you both as my guests and am very pleased that you like Haut de Cagnes and "Le Refuge".. I try always to make the stay of my guests as pleasant as I can for them. Thanks again for giving me a nice review in the website. Best regards, Willy-Maria Tellander

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Le Refuge. The apartment is clean and well-maintained and has all the amenities, including an ample, delicious breakfast each morning. The owner is gracious, knowledgeable about the area, and very accommodating to special requests. The village is lovely and quiet and a perfect starting point for visiting all the wonderful area attractions. In addition, there are a number of excellent restaurants within easy walking distance so you can end a day of site-seeing with a great dinner in a cozy, convenient atmosphere without journeying far from your bed! I recommend a stay at Le Refuge for anyone wanting a quiet haven to relax and escape while still being close to Nice and other attractions. The bus system is extremely convenient and there's no need to rent a car.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, tourists without a car, age 55+, sightseeing.
Owner response: Thank you for your review and am pleased to read that you liked Haut de Cagnes and my B&B.

My husband and I stayed in this lovely place for 2 1/2 weeks in May 2009. We fell in love with it the minute we arrived. In addition to having the bountiful, delicious breakfast basket arrive at our chamber door each morning at the time we requested, we loved being in the heart of Haut-de-Cagnes. We felt like we were living in this wonderful medieval village. The little set of rooms is a great bargain and has a very lovely ambiance. One can look out the very French shutters and see the sea in the distance over the beautiful tile roofs. The light changes and makes evening a magical time. The bed is very comfortable and there is a little table for eating. The bathroom is even more spacious than it appears in the photos. In addition, there is a separate little room with a microwave and refrigerator. It was very economical to stay here and there were enough good restaurants right in the medieval village that we ate there most nights. The village itself is very convenient for exploring the neighboring area by bus. It's only one euro for the bus including a transfer. We took the bus from the airport and then the free Navette that stops at the same bus stop. We explored the entire area from Nice to Cannes to Grasse to St Paul de Vence as well as many of the other tiny perched villages. The proprietor is a very gentile woman who was helpful and assessible. In the room there was a basket full of travel information for nearby towns as well as tour books for France. There were also CDs and DVDs but we spent most of our time right there in the beautiful village. Haut-de-Cagnes is now on our short list of retirement locations.Owner response: Dear Lyn, thank you for your review and I was very happy to have you both staying in my B&B. Hope you do not forget to go on with your French lessons!

My husband and I stayed in this charming B&B for one week in August 2008.It was very clean and well appointed with washer and dryer (also used by the owner, but not inconvenient), heated towel racks, iron and hair dryer. Our host provided an ample continental breakfast each morning in a basket outside our door, with a variety of goodies each day. Although the house is situated at the top of Haut de Cagnes and it is a steep climb up from the main town, there is a free shuttle bus every half hour, which we took advantage of daily!! Haut de Cagnes is very quaint with narrow cobblestoned streets and a main square with several restaurants, an art gallery, bocce pad and Grimaldi Castle. The location is excellent for visiting the surrounding area of Nice, Cannes, Monaco and transportation is very reasonable. We hope to stay there again one day.Owner response: Thank you for your review it is nice to hear that you enjoyed your stay. By the way the free Bus/Shuttle goes now every 15 min to Haut de Cagnes and back to Cagnes sur Mer.
