Montenegro is a hidden gem of a country. Little known as a tourist destination, it is a small country of extraordinary beauty; vast mountains, inland lakes and beautiful beaches. Ancient walled towns and small stone villages untouched by the passage of time crowd along the waters edges. UNESCO protected Kotor Old Town sits at the far end of the dramatic Bay of Kotor, which is surrounded by mountains. Often dubbed a 'mini-Dubrovnik' because of its elegant Venetian architecture, Kotor has traffic-free marble tiled narrow streets opening up onto bustling squares where you can sit outside one of the many cafes, enjoy a drink and watch the world go by. The clean sea is close by, with both swimming platforms along the edge of the bay, and sandy and pebbled beaches close by.
Year Purchased: 2005
About the owner: I bought the apartment in Kotor when I was single living in Shropshire where I come from. Since then I have met and married a lovely man and now have a 5 year old daughter. We all live in Somerset, just outside Bath and I work from home as a self-employed consultant in planning.
Why the Owner Chose Budva: I lived in Zagreb in 1988 for 7 months as part of my Russian degree course and have many fond memories of a relaxed life in Croatia where inflation was so high that you only changed enough sterling for a few days at a time and the prices were so low that I felt like a millionaire! So when I decided to invest in a property abroad for my 'pension' I wanted to buy in that part of the world again. Although I was initially looking at Croatia, I was tempted to consider Montenegro at a property show. I loved this particular apartment as it had some great old features (high ceilings and large old double doors) and I could imagine myself coming to stay in-between contracts all year round - pottering round the market, sitting in cafes, being part of the life there - not just a tourist.
The Unique Benefits at this Apartment: My apartment was filled to the brim with a large family when I first looked around it - it didn't even have a bathroom - yet I loved the old feel of the place - it was like stepping back in time. If you want to feel like you are living in Kotor and not just a holiday maker, Kotor is great. And that is probably why I love the place. You can throw the windows open each morning and hear the gentle sounds of the town waking up, the voices of guides showing tourist groups around, watch the world go by.... You can walk down to the bakery to get fresh bread in the morning, potter around the outdoor market, wile away hours in one of the many cafes. I only speak a smattering of Serbian/Croatian now but I still can't help feeling a little bit at home whenever I go back. Monetengro is a bit rough round the edges, it surprises you yet it is so infintely beautiful that every time I visit I am blown away once again.
