The perfect beach cottage getaway. Relax and play at a private beach just one block from Lake Michigan, this house on a quiet country road offers all the amenities you would expect of a cozy cottage in the woods. Surrounded by fresh air and trees in a beautiful setting, while relaxing in the screened-in porch, you will feel miles away from the hustle bustle of everyday life. Modern rustic, with 4 bedrooms(2 down, 2 up), two baths (up and down), and room for 10 or more, its a wonderful family get-away. The 2nd floor was completely remodeled in 2006 that includes a new bathroom, bedrooms with natural cedar walls, wood flooring, kids craft & game area, and more.
Central air, hardwood floors refinished last year, full kitchen with stainless steel appliances, front load hi-efficiency washer and dryer, large screened in-porch, firepit, and a private deck next to secluded outside shower (think hot shower after a cool sunset swim). These are just a few of the amenities you will find.
Located just west of Glenn, a sleepy little town known as "Pancake Town USA" where locals commemorate the "Storm Of '37" with annual summer pancake breakfasts at the community hall. Read all about it at the Glenn Restaurant about a mile away. Glenn is an easy two hour drive from Chicago. Saugatuck, rated 3rd Coolest Small Town in America by Budget Travel Magazine, is ten minutes north and offers excellent restaurants, galleries, and great shops not found in a typical town. South Haven, ten minutes south also has a wonderful harbor, with restaurants, beaches, grocery stores, and activities.
This is a summer $4000 weekly rental that rents for $2950. Why? I am my own property manager (much better if you do it yourself) and can save you the 25 - 30% fee.

Having purchased our "dream cottage" in 2005, we ask that you respect our place. If you want to party loud, light fireworks, invite lots of friends, keep late hours on the beach, etc., then this is NOT the place for you. Certainly we want you to have a good time, just do so with family, friends, etc with respect for the area and neighbors. This is one of just a few rentals in this beach area and yet it is pretty sparse... you may only see a dozen people on the beach at any one time..
Our renovations in 2006 just made it that much more special. We added all new stainless appliances, a new 2nd floor with added room (dormers), a new bathroom, new heating and central a/c, and lots more. We kept the rustic cottage feel with cedar walls, wood floors, and a Lake MI stone floor entrance hallway.
The guest reviews have been very positive (see guest comments).
In 2008 we added an outdoor small pond that's been coined the "Frog Pond". Kids love it and you will too, watching the frogs as the sunbathe on the rocks. New for this year is a gas burner type fireplace stove that flips on with a switch and keeps the place toasty on cool evenings. In 2009, we added a flag stone patio area by the firepit and outdoor shower. We just added a Sony Bravia flat screen in the living area and another flatscreen TV upstairs in the bedroom.
Oh, and we take pride in being CLEAN, CLEAN, CLEAN.. Be sure to read comments.
I also have 2 condos in Saugatuck/Douglas. see vrbo listings #25131 & #38891

Map & Owner's Profile
Perfect Cottage, Lake Mi Private Beach, Woods, Quiet, Clean
Year Purchased: 2005
Why the Owner Chose Saugatuck
Hidden gem in the woods by the beach.... with only a dozen homes spread out in a unique area with loads of wooded lots between cottages... association (more like the 12 homes that share the beach) are smaller, quaint homes..Other areas of older cottages are densely clustered and sit next to each other... Not HERE. We investigated why, and found out there is a common water well used by our small cottage association... and no new connections are allowed. Hence, no new homes can be built. WOW!, surrounded by woods with little traffic and lots of privacy and a private beach where you can walk for miles, hardly any people contact, and close to a nature preserve Wau-Ke-Na, translated, from the Pottawatomie Indian name means Forest by the Water. Its the perfect place for a getaway.
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage
The tranquil setting in the woods, private beach with miles of walking, lush sand dunes, nature preserve and hiking. Cleanliness with no surprises. The Frog Pond is a big hit, the hammock and screened in porch provide plenty of "relax time".
Earl's Berry Farm (1/2 mile north)has the best local berries as well as yummy pie and other goodies.
Glenn General Store.. yummy pizza, sandwiches, beer, wine, liquor, newspapers
Rasberries, Blueberries, Ice Cream, Pies, and farm stand. You pic available.
Wau-Ke-Na ("forest-by-the-water") is the largest of Southwest Michigan Land Conservancy's preserves, and includes forests, fields, streams, ponds, bluffs, and beaches. Beautiful area for wildlife, walking, hiking. No admission fee.

Enjoyable Experience in late Fall

Used in late October. Nice, woodsy feel (lots of wood) but very clean and tidy. Gas (wood)stove provided alittle firelight for ambiance. Modern force-air furnance kept us nice and toasty. Fully furnished, from kitchen and bath, to bedrooms (very nice). Quite comfortable for four adult couples. Two bedrooms on main floor + fold-out sleeper sofa. Two bedrooms upstairs. Large indoor dining table with bench seating provided ample room for family-style meals. Screened (mostly enclosed but unheated) porch provided useful space, as well as additional seating that we used indoors. Nice outdoor gas grill. Fire pit area and patio area (with water feature & mini-fountain) were also enjoyed. Most appreciated (and used by me) was the availability of the outdoor shower. Hot water doesn't last for long, but it was more than adequate for my brief use. Short, 5 minute walk to private, Lake Michigan beach access. View from platform at top of stairs partially obstructed by some of surrounding tree branches. 83 (fairly steep) steps down to beach and Lake Michigan. But viewing sunsets from shoreline worth the slow climb back up the 83 steps, to the top of the hill. We found Glenn location was ideal for accessing both Saugatuck and South Haven via Bluestar Highway (A2). Saugatuck has most of the shopping, wine tasting rooms, and afew restaurants. South Haven offers afew shops, but more of the better restaurants. Also, if you need a large store grocery or pharmacy, South Haven has them. Very much enjoyed the arts & crafts type businesses between Glenn and South Haven. Highlights included TWO stops each at McIntosh Winery, and the wildly interesting antique business (look for giant, yellow, upright plastic rat). If you are an "American Pickers" type of collector, this antique place is for you. Cold, wet, windy fall weather did bring some unexpected challenges, but overall, we had a most enjoyable weekend stay at Glennwood Cottage. Owner obviously puts much effort into making this an top-notch rental. I personally appreciate his effort and service. I wouldn't hesitate to rent either this cottage, or one of his other rentals. I look forward to that next time.

Beautiful spot, not very far from the beach steps and VERY clean! We had some beautiful sunsets, great cookouts and enjoyed the well-equipped kitchen. We would definitely stay here again. If you geocache, there are some great caches within five-eight miles.

Our family of eight adults enjoyed our stay at this well done, well maintained house in the woods. We took several trips to the nearby communities of South Haven, Saugatuck and Holland during our stay. Each trip we took introduced us to a delightful area of the country that we had not yet experienced. We took the short walk to the beach each morning and evening to soak in the cool breezes and beautiful sunsets. Fair warning though it's 90 steps down and 90 steps back up to access the beach so be prepared. All things considered it was a wonderful trip for all of us.

We had a small family reunion over Memorial Day weekend. The weather wasn't the greatest but the cottage more then made up for it! The large dining area was great for seating all 10 of us for meals. Listening to the waves roll in on Lake Michigan made for peacefull sleep. Everything was cozy but roomy at the same time. We liked all the little unique details around the cottage added interest to the place as well, discovering some little detail here or there. The cottage was as advertised, very clean and comfortible. I'd definately recommend as a place for my friends and family to stay when visiting. Thank you Rob for a great stay!

A home away from home. All the comforts we needed and more, very clean house, long sandy beach, close to South Haven and Douglas, totally relaxing. Made us forget our lifes temporarily left behind. Second time renting from Rob and we'll do it again! We've seen a bit of the world and will gladly return to beautiful Lake Michigan. Thanks for having us!

Our family (2 adults and 4 adult children) stayed at the Perfect Cottage for a long weekend this fall and everything was wonderful. We drove up the driveway and walked in the house... and it was so charming, clean and well maintained. We loved the huge screened in porch and went outside and followed the wooden walkway to the firepit where we had bonfires every night....I said 'This is just perfect!" This was our first time using VRBO....and it was so easy...and the 'listing' was accurate in every detail including the photos. We chose this particular cottage for it's ammenities and proximity to Saugatuk and Douglas- as well as Lake Michigan and also because the owner, Rob Joon is a Realtor and we thought he would be professional. If I had a question- either before or during our stay- we called Rob Joon and were able to speak with him right away. I even lost my favorite sweater and emailed Rob to see if I left it in the cottage...he found it and told me that he had already sent it to me in the mail- before I even had a chance to ask him to send it and that I would pay the postage! The Perfect Cottage was perfect, it had great ammenities-including an indoor fireplace, a kitchen with dinnerwear, utensils etc., comfortable beds, was very clean. I have already recommened the cottage to several friends and family member....we fell in love with the area and are planning on staying at the Perfect Cottage again next fall !

One of the most relaxing vacations in years. Cottage is cozy, comfy and very clean with all the amenities needed-there are no surprises when you arrive. If you want noise this place is not for you. If you want tranquil, a beautiful setting with Lake Michigan 5 minutes away, then it is for you and it's kid/pet friendly. The private beach is glorious! Getting down/up the stairs to the beach might be a problem for the elderly or someone afraid of heights, etc. They are steep and many. We looked at many vacation rentals before choosing this one and I'm glad we did. Our two Labs loved the lake and watching deer from the porch or on our many daily walks. The entire area (many towns on the coast) is easy to navigate as traffic is very light. We made daily excursions to Saugatuck, the Dunes, South Haven, Grand Haven, etc. Lot's of shops, farm markets and great homemade pies at Crane's. The weather was perfect for late September, very warm and breezy. Our stay was hassel free (except a power outage due to a wonderful Great Lakes storm) and we would rent this cottage again. Thanks, Rob, for allowing pets and sharing your lovely cottage with those of us who can't live this life year 'round. I'm jealous.

+ clean, conveinent, really close to the beach, good for kids + lots of room + great outdoor space with grill, fire pit, an screened in back porch + owner is profesisonal and great to deal with only watch-outs (related the the area more than this cottage): + bring bug spray if you are there in the summer (august), as its in the woods and the mosquitos are thick + the stairs down to the beach are over 85 steps. its a beautiful view, but a hike down and back up we had a great time, and would consider staying there again if we're in the area.

It's bigger than it looks, roomy! Clean! All the conveniences of home! Great location! Rob was fantastic to deal with. The weather was great....high 80's all week and it only rained the last day. The deer were beautiful. The walk to the beach was an evening event to watch the sun set or a storm come in the distance. We all played board games on the screened porch(mom, dad and kids ages19, 17,14,10) It is in the woods so bring bug spray for out back in the hot summer after dark. The Wifi helped us plan our days checking weather and distance to local attractions(and keep in touch while we were gone) Bring a movie for rainy days, there are two flatscreen TVs,DVD and Video player. We visited Oval beach and Saugatuck Dunes( 6/10 of a mile walk but well worth it! ) Ate at Saugatuck Brewery, Monroe's, Scooter's, Butler's. Earl's farm market, down the road a piece, pies(rhubarb) were great! Enjoy your stay!
