Wabi Sabi Cottage, Circa 1919 - Restored, Private, & Romantic
- Minimum stay:Contact owner
- Internet:Yes
- Pets allowed:Yes
- Wheel chair accessible:No
Built in 1919, the Wabi Sabi Cottage was completely and lovingly restored in 2004. We changed the exterior as little as possible but once you step inside no detail has been overlooked. We added central air conditioning, used reproduction lighting, outfitted the kitchen and bath with modern conveniences - while keeping the cottage charm.
It is so special that Budget Travel magazine featured it in their September 2011 issue of Top 10 Coolest towns in America. Cedar Key was number 8.
Vintage photos and a mix of antiques with new furnishings complete the décor. There is off-street parking with room for a boat trailer. It is the perfect spot for a romantic getaway. We hope you will love the quiet, privacy, and charm as much as we, our friends, and our family do.
Historic Cedar Key is a nature lover's and artist's dream. Cedar Key is one of the few remaining fishing villages (mullet, redfish, grouper and trout) left in Florida and oysters, crabs, and farm-raised clams still being harvested the old-fashioned way. Nearby are outer islands with historic ruins to explore, as well as Manatee Springs, Homasassa Springs, and the Lower Suwanee Wildlife Refuge. We have numerous wonderful restaurants, fun shops, and art galleries.
We have two festivals a year - in April (the Art's Festival) and the Seafood Festival in October. You can also rent kayaks, bikes, boats, fishing guides, or golf carts to get around but do not forget to bring a camera, that book you have been meaning to read, and your fishing pole. You are in for a wonderful and relaxing time.
Only one hour from Gainesville, two hours from Tampa, and three from Orlando, Jacksonville, or Tallahassee airports. Please see the Chamber of Commerce Website Link for additional information.

Fun little cottage close to downtown and great restaurants. Comes equipped with everything you need. Spiral staircase leading to the bedroom may be challenging for some to navigate. Delightful swing on the porch - great for relaxing, reading and watching the world go by.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, sightseeing, adventure seekers.

If you want to visit the incredible funky town of Cedar Key make sure you stay a the funky WABI SABI Cottage. ( I think Wabi Sabi is japanese for "funky"!) This neat and clean little house is perfect for four folks wanting a central location within Cedar Key's downtown proper. There's lots of fascinating history thereabouts and this little house (circa 1900's) was certainly a part of it!Recommended for: Romantic getaway, age 55+, pet owners, families with young children, sightseeing, adventure seekers.

We spent an incredibly relaxing week at Wabi Sabi with our 3 year old son. It had everything we needed and he absolutely loved the spiral staircase. We picked up supplies at the local market for breakfasts and lunches, plus a couple of dinners. The small beach with large playground was perfect for us- I've never seen my little guy so comfortable in the water. We could walk to Dock Street from the cottage but mostly drove to avoid the killer mosquitoes (that everyone said was abnormal due to recent hard storms). Highly recommend this rental.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, tourists without a car, age 55+, pet owners, families with young children, adventure seekers.

My husband and I (and our dog) just got back from a lovely stay at the Wabi Sabi cottage. This is a great little cottage, perfect for a romantic weekend. Regarding the cottage, it doesn't look like much when you pull into the driveway, but it has been very nicely restored. The cottage is comfortable and really has everything you need. We slept so well, the bed is comfy and the area is quiet. We did not run the AC, but it has one if you need it. Kitchen wise, we ate out most nights, but did cook fish on the grill our last night. We had breakfast at the cottage, great to have a bagel and coffee at home. We had cocktails on the porch most nights, before we went to dinner. It was great to have the dog screens for the porch, as we just put the dog screens across the steps and left the doors open when we were inside or we all enjoyed sitting on the porch watching the world go by. Location, we parked our car at the cottage and could easily walk to downtown, to the water for sunset, to the little market and to dock street. We only drove once during our stay and that was to the marina for a fishing outing (and we could have walked but we had bags with us). The owner was great to work with and responsive and helpful.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, tourists without a car, pet owners, sightseeing.

We found the cottage to be perfect for the two of us. We spent a week at the end of June. We brought our bikes with us and I highly encourage everyone to do so. The location of the cottage is such though that you can easily walk most everywhere....downtown or down to the waterfront. We found Ada to be quite accomadating. We asked if there was a waffle iron which there was not but Ada offered to secure one for us which we declined but found quite nice of her to offer. I found it amusing that the horse drawn carriage tours in town stop at the cottage and tell folks about it. When we first drove up to the cottage the wife was a little hesitant upon seeing the outside as it still maintains that 'old cracker cottage' look. Ada met us at the cottage and filled us in on all the local stuff we had questions about and recommended local eateries and things to.I can say though that once inside we were quite impressed with Ada and husbands efforts in restoring....its a wonderful quiet place to stay at. Probably the only negative thing about our visit was the dishwasher was broke the entire week we were there. Of course this was through no fault of the owners.....it just happened. The best reccommendation I can make is we would stay there again. I would also suggest if buying food provisions for more than a day or two to stop elsehwere on your way into Cedar Key as the small market in town (just a couple of blocks from the cottage) is fine for odds and ends but I would not count upon it for a weeks worth of food. All the restaurants downtown are just a short walk away. We will stay here again when we visit. Thanks Ada for the hospitality!!Recommended for: Romantic getaway, tourists without a car, age 55+, sightseeing, adventure seekers.

We just returned from a 2 night stay at Wabi Sabi. The location is perfect, short stroll to downtown or to water front. The cottage is private, mostly quiet, and adorable! It has to be seen to be appreciated. What the owners have done to so lovingly restore this place is amazing! We found everything we could need or want, but mostly you just need that porch swing! We rented a golf cart one day & what a super way to see Cedar Key. I am plotting now when we may be able to return to that little Cracker Cottage. You gotta go & bring your dogs! Be prepared for folks to stop & take a picture of your cottage, it is that cute!Recommended for: Romantic getaway, tourists without a car, age 55+, pet owners.

Suprised my wife on her 50th with a weekend in Cedar Key - she was completely fooled. It was a fabulous trip and the Wabi-Sabi cabin was idyllic; perfect for the trip even with four of us (me, my wife and 2 children). The cottage is beautifully and lovingly restored (down to the tineist details - dishtowels match curtains, etc...) by owners Greg and Ada and seemed to have pretty much EVERYTHING despite its compact nature. I secretly brought a blender and other kitchen items for the b-day party only to discover that the place really IS fully furnished, there was no need to bring much of anything, even most spices. The owners also provded kayaking and restaurant suggestions whch were ery helpful. During the day(s) we kayaked and walked around town and in the evenings sat on the Wabi Sabi porch chatting and having a glass of wine or some margaritas. Although the cottage is small-ish, we never felt overly cramped even as a family of four, One evening we went up the street and purchased fresh clams and grouper. The shop owner gave us a tour of his clam nursury and facilty and sold us some of the best seafood we had ever had - again enjoyed on the cottage porch. To make a long story short, we HIGHLY recommend the Wabi-Sabi and Cedar Key and definitely have plans to return to both. The cottage was comfortable, well-maintaiend, in town so that we could walk everywhere and, according to my wife "charming and romantic". I'm not sure that I have ever seen her that happy and relaxed even after many years of marriage (that is not an exageration) and on the last morning of our visit my 14-year-old turned to me and said "Dad, MAJOR brownie points...". I have been to Cedar Key before on a variety of occasions but will never look at it the same again.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, tourists without a car, families with young children, sightseeing, adventure seekers.

This is the second time that my partner and I have stayed at Wabi Sabi. She had actually stayed here 2 or 3 times previously. Wabi Sabi is amazing! As a couple, we exude the essence of Wabi Sabi in everything that we are. Therefore, we cannot imagine staying anywhere else. Our favorite place is the porch swing! Mosquitoes? Use the large fan...mosquitoes don't like the wind! Pets? Use the fantastic screen enclosures on the porch...they're perfect. Looking for something really exciting to do? The porch swing! Good food? Annie's...our favorite. Want adventure? Ride your bike over towards the museum and look for the huge eagle's nest. The best place about Cedar Key and Wabi Sabi? Nothing to do, except relax and enjoy life. Wabi Sabi is US! Thanks Ada!Recommended for: Romantic getaway, age 55+, pet owners.
Owner response: Thanks Georgiann! I'm so glad you were able to come back again and look forward to seeing you again down the line. The best thing about Wabi Sabi is that it gets even better over time. Bye for now.............

Ada, our weekend at the Wabi Sabi Cottage was all we hoped for and more. The house was spotless and we enjoyed your incredible attention to detail-- from the historic photos of Cedar Key, to the well-outfitted kitchen and special spa soaps and lotions in the bath. It was also the PERFECT location for exploring Cedar Key-- we took a very short walk to dinner downtown both nights! Thanks again for your wonderful hospitality.Did you find this review helpful? Owner info

About the owner: We are in our late 40's and live on the island and worked as a General Contractor and Building Designer doing primarily custom homes and remodelings. While we are now involved in different endeavors, we still love the historic and natural beauty of Cedar Key, our pets and neighbors on the island and really appreciate the visitors who feel the same way we do.. Many times, those visitors have wound up being our friends and neighbors - that's one of the perks of sharing Wabi Sabi and Cedar Key with others.
Why the Owner Chose Cedar Key:
We bought Wabi Sabi because it was on 2 lots and there were people who wanted to buy it, tear it down and build a couple stilt houses. We decided to purchase, restore and share it with guests to who come to Cedar Key and want to stay in a one-of-a-kind cottage.
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
When we travel, we prefer to stay in historic or funky and unique homes and don't want to have to haul our own supplies or entire kitchen. When I out-fitted Wabi Sabi, I decided that if it was something I would want or need on vacation, it was going in. I think that our guests appreciate the attention to detail and extra amenities. Really, just about all you need to bring is your clothes and toiletry bag!
