Owner's Profile
Owner Description
Year Purchased: 1997
I'm retired from the City of Toledo where I was the Registrar of Vital Statistics.
I love to travel, garden, feed the birds, read and relax with friends. I've always had animals and work with many various animal groups, particiulary spay/neuter groups.
I've explored all the little cities around here but never tire of returning. I especially like the state parks and beaches, the festivals, the winetasting,
the shopping......just about everything around this area! There are so many great places to explore.
Why the Owner Chose Lake Leelanau
My family always vacationed in and around this area when I was a kid in the 50's. I love the area because it's in the country and I never grow tired of seeing the rolling hills and the changing scenery. I'm not here all the time, but sure wish I could be. It's away from the noise of the city. I personally don't like staying in motels when I'm in an area like this. I much prefer the quiet of the countryside to the hustle and bustle of a motel/hotel or camp site. Usually there is a nice breeze from the lake which discourages mosquitoes.
The Unique Benefits of this House
My property is almost 1 acre in size. The house is about 200 feet from the road and down a hill. There is a small sandy beach with 3 steps downs to the water. Small children can handle the steps but babies should not be left alone on the beach for their own safety. I realize that most people know that...but this is just a reminder. We see an occasional deer and fox as well as the ducks. Since we're on the east side of the lake, we get to enjoy gorgeous sunsets. Occasionally we're fortunate enough to view the Northern Lights if you can stay awake long enough!

The previous review summed it up nicely. We, too, were VERY surprised to find that owner lives on upper level, but luckily I put the pieces together two days prior (so we were at least mentally prepared)...I called asking for directions to cottage. Realized the address was the same as the one I was told to send deposit check. I asked if owner lived next door, and then it was revealed that she actually lived in upper level. It is a duplex of sorts. I was really surprised, because during initial inquiry I asked outright (because I got the impression during conversation that owner lived on Lake Leelanau), "Oh, do you live near the rental cottage then?" and she replied simply "Yes". I wish I had inquired further :( The owner was very sweet, and it seemed she wanted to be accomodating...so I have reservations even posting this review. By the time we realized the situation, was too late to find a new vacation spot. We went, stayed, and very much enjoyed the day trips around the area. We enjoyed a couple of campfires at the cottage in the evenings, wood provided (thank you). I had to keep a very careful eye on my 3 year old, the slope is quite steep and he has no fear. We could see by the pictures, though, that it was probably pretty steep. Also one night someone was walking around upstairs-- and then going up and down the outdoor steps outside our bedroom until 2a.m. or later. It sounded like someone was packing up and leaving in the middle of the night??? We did not get very good sleep while there. One last thing...the beds appear to be full-size, not queen? minor, but still...sheets Our big problem here is that in NO PLACE in the description does it mention that the residence will be shared. It IS misleading.
Owner response:I do not stay at the cottage every week, but there are times that I do. Unfortunately, a friend who had stayed with me had a death in the family and had to leave unexpectedly during the night and could not wait until the next morning. He did try to be very quiet. I assure you that the beds are all queen size; the pullout sofa is also queen size and queen size sheets fit all the beds. I was surprised by this review as I thought she was very satisfied with the accomodations and seemed to enjoy herself very much. I have very little contact with the people who rent. I do not use the yard or beach...I usually read or watch TV or take daytrips; I try to give my guests as much privacy as possible to ensure they have a great vacation. I have many repeat guests who find their stay here very enjoyable.

Upon arriving, we discovered that this is not a private 2-bedroom home. It is the lower level of a house and the owner stays in the upper level with her dog. There is no mention of this anywhere on the listing or any of the times I talked to the owner before arriving, so we were quite surprised. Also, the sandy beach area is very dangerous for young children. It is on a steep hill that slopes down to a four-foot drop to rocks in the water. There was no way we could let our 15-month old play freely in the sandy area. The cottage itself could also use a thorough cleaning and updating. Due to these reasons, we decided to leave halfway through the week, and the owner readily gave us half of our money back, which we appreciated. We wanted to write a review b/c we felt like this listing was misleading, especially concerning this being a shared residence.
Owner response:I am sorry that these people were not happy with my cottage. I have rented this cottage out for almost 15 years with no complaints. I agree that a baby should not be left to play alone on the beach...when a baby is playing by any water, it should be supervised. Almost all of Lake Leelanau has rocks, but the bottom is sandy. Small children have no problem playing in the water...water shoes are helpful and I have a small supply that people can use. I expect guests to leave the cottage clean when they leave. These people left a poopy diaper unwrapped in the kitchen wastebasket plus a supply of used beer bottles. Fortunately the cottage IS cleaned after every guest by my cleaning lady plus I look it over to make sure there are proper supplies. These are the only people who have ever left my property in this condition. My appliances and furniture are no more than 5 years old and I don't feel that any updating is necessary at this time. My cottage is reasonable priced; the brand new cottages may be more appealing, but they cost much more to rent. I have had many repeat guests over the years who find my place very charming and love the surroundings. One former guest stopped by to tell me they had tried to rent again, but the week they wanted was already taken. I take it as quite a compliment when former guests come back year after year.

Thank you Carole for sharing your cottage with us! Our family of 4 adults and 4 children (and dog porter too!) had a really enjoyable time. The cottage is very comfortable and the view is beautiful. The kids loved playing in the water and beach area. The lawn and firepit area are well maintained, as are all of your beautiful flowers. We were pleased at how clean the cottage was and we felt very welcome and at "home". Thank you for being so caring to our little ones as well. Everyone really enjoyed talking with you and getting to know you and your dog too! I believe great and lasting memories were made :) Fondly, Laurie
Owner response:Laurie, thank you for your wonderful review. It always makes me feel good to know that you had a great time. I enjoyed meeting all of you....you're such a fun family! I quite appreciate how clean you left my cottage, even raking the sand where the kids made holes so no one would trip in one. By now, I hope Jon's thumb is fully healed. This was Pike - 1; Jon - 0. But I know there's a bigger and better fish out there just waiting for his return! Cheers, Carole

Dear Carole...Thank you for the lovely place! We all had a GREAT time! The dogs loved swimming in the wonderful waters of Lake Leelanau! Just beautiful! I appreciate your sending me back my deposit check. Even through we had 6 dogs, we would not leave any place in "bad condition." You and Spencer have a wonderful summer! Bobbi
