This cottage really is unique. It's also the most perfect base for exploring beautiful Southwest Ireland. Kenmare Bay is 5 minutes away with spectacular ocean vistas, rugged mountain scenery, pebble beaches, fishing and quaint villages up and down the Beara Peninsula (30+ photos on request).
The countryside provides wonderful views; mountains, woodlands, heather-clad bogs, Celtic ruins, waterfalls (eg.Gleninchiquin 10 mins away) and beautiful valleys for viewing and hiking. Close by are fresh water lakes for trout fishing and inshore fishing with boat rental available, eg. Leo at 'Ait Eile' 5 minutes away at Coornagillagh Pier (opposite entrance to Gleninchiquin on road to Kenmare) & Sean at the Lake House Pub. Check out Star Sailing, the recently opened and very successful sailing and water sports centre only 10 minutes away (GOOGLE Star Sailing OR check out staroutdoors.ie)
You can step out the door and experience unspoiled, rural Ireland, yet there are many day trips to popular tourist sites and sophisticated yet inviting Kenmare is only a 15 minute drive away. A heritage Town, it is full of award winning restaurants, a Wednesday Market, wonderful pubs and exquisite shops. The Dingle Peninsula, Ring of Kerry and Mizen Head/West Cork are an easy day trip away. Some of the main sites include Killarney, Castletown Bere, Glengarrif, the Skellig Islands, Gouganne Barra, Muckross House and the Blasket Islands.
There are two golf courses in Kenmare and several more near Killarney. There are three local pubs within five miles (check out May 2001 Esquire magazine article on page 80 which features our favorite at Kilmackillogue!) - which have the traditional, country feel - and many more in Kenmare.
The house - our home from home - is fourteen years old and has the feel of a traditional cottage but with all the added modern comforts, eg. underfloor heating (downstairs), top quality cotton sheets & duvet covers, pure duck/goose down duvets & all new pilows (all dust mite/allergy free), mohair rug throws, newly carpeted upstairs, freshly painted inside (June 2010) and it's spotless.
It contains a fully equipped Kitchen (new 2010), open plan living area, and a beautiful Sun Room and slate Patio. The sitting area features an antique copper fireplace, oak coffee table and beautiful original artwork. All furniture has been recently upholstered (June 2010). Off the corridor (accessed through the side entrance on the right hand side) to the left there are two rooms: (i) a Utility room (that also contains the tank for our solar unit now), and (ii) a Bathroom with shower. To the right is the Study/3rd bedroom with a double futon, wardrobe, large bookcase and desk and chair and wonderful views.
Upstairs there are two large double bedrooms (Queen + Double) separated by a bright and modern bathroom (new shower 2010). We are delighted to announce we finally got our long wished for view from our upstairs bedrooms. We've converted our 2 Velux (roof) windows into 5 foot in length 'hip to head' height windows. Both rooms now have a large settle bed in their window area that can be comfortably slept on or just used to lounge on and look out at the wonderful views.
The Cottage is set on a one acre plot, overlooked only by the beautiful surrounding scenery. Depending on the time of year, our glass house is usually full of good things to eat. (UPDATE: This year we're giving it a good clean out and rest though. For this Summer we have decided to pave it and are using it as an outdoor Conservatory, it works! Watch the sun go down and the stars come out over a candlelit dinner in our cosy new outdoor room! We plan to put in new soil for next season).
If interested, we have many photos of both inside and outside the cottage. Just ask and we can email them all to you now. Don't forget to check out the 'COMMENTS from previous guests' link to see how happy people who stayed here were. And if there is anything we can do to make your stay more enjoyable, please just let us know.
This Cottage is a haven of peace and tranquility, so comfortable and tastefully decorated & finished that you don't have to leave the place to relax and feel like you're on holidays. Unlike most rental properties, we do NOT charge extra for heating, electricity or gas - none of those horrible meters to feed money to in sight!
Come and see what this really beautiful home and area has to offer. You won't regret it.

Why the Owner Chose Kenmare
My husband Joe has been coming here (from Westmeath) since a young boy, as his mother's father was born in Ardea, Tuosist. This man's parents - my husband's great grandparents - also came from Ardea and our Cottage is within 2km of both their original houses. Apart from the family connection, the beauty of the area is what swung it for us. We have both travelled extensively (Europe, South America, Africa) but there's nowhere we'd rather own a second home than here.
The Unique Benefits of this Cottage
A quiet, light filled, spotless Cottage, beautifully & recently (2010) re decorated and re furnished. Extraordinary natural beauty right at your doorstep.

Fantastic holiday experience - could have stayed much longer. Road in from Kenmare a little narrow until you get used to it, but great to have the seclusion. Lots of beautiful places to explore, but at the same time relaxing. Walking distance to a very friendly pub. Cottage spotless and very comfortable - everything you need is there. Owners extremely helpful both for booking and for supplying local information. We would love to return one day. Thanks from 4 crazy Canadians!
Owner response:Hi Chris and Dale, many thanks for your lovely comments on your stay at our Cottage in Tuosist last Summer. We're so glad you had a good time. We're actually just on our way back to Dublin after having spent a wonderful week there ourselves. Although most of the country was experiencing water shortages and burst pipes after the 'crazy snow' that arrived the end of November; our underfloor heating and solar panels thankfully kept our place snug and dry this Winter. We'd love to have you back at some future date. Please do get in contact if you're ever thinking of a return trip, whether or not you plan to stay with us we'd love to help you out in any way we can. Wishing you all a happy and peaceful 2011, Mary & Joe

Your 100,000 Irish Welcomes begin at Mary and Joe's Cottage. We have stayed at the cottage three times - every time we visited Ireland - over the last 10 years. Our last stay was the end of September 2009. We felt like we were at home - away from home. We could always relax from the hectic check in-check out at hotels and B&B's. The cottage is lovely and has always been meticulously clean. I could sit for hours and watch the mountains from the cozy eating area. It's a great place to relax, take walks and enjoy the beautiful scenery all around. For a great meal and good craic, as well as authentic Irish music, visit Sean Green's Lakehouse. Joe and Mary were always most helpful in making suggestions for activities in the area - and also had available manuals for the Irish appliances. We would definitely recommend Joe and Mary's cottage for your next stay in the "Wild and Wonderful" part of Ireland (our favorite part of Ireland) Dave and Prudy

A BEAUTIFUL, PEACEFUL COTTAGE IN A BEAUTIFUL AREA

We really loved this place. This cottage near Kenmare was our first stop in our 10 day vacation in Ireland. We stayed three nights. It was very, very clean & modern, but also cozy and quaint and very private and quiet. Our party consisted of two adult couples. One couple used the upstairs bath privately and we (the other couple) used the downstairs bath privately. The beds in the large bedrooms were very comfortable. The kitchen is awesome. The dining room table was a great gathering place for morning coffee or evening snacks. The yard is landscaped and very nice. It was rainy & chilly when we were there, so we unfortunately did not have an occasion to sit outside on the patio. Parking is right outside the side entrance door. The only problem we had was with the hot water. Our first day we ran out. But our engineer guys figured it out and it was OK for the rest of our stay. I would stay there again and hopefully we will have the chance in the future.
Owner response:Thank-you for taking the time to write a review for us, Marie Ann. We're delighted you loved the Cottage and are so sorry to hear you'd problems with the hot water. Sorry to hear you'd bad weather too. The new Solar Panel water heating system in addition to our oil fired boiler and our electric immersion heating element are more than sufficient to provide any hot water needed. I can only imagine that with the weather being bad the solar panels didn't produced as much hot water as usual and that if perhaps all 4 of you were showering within a hour or two or each other you would have needed to use the oil fired central heating system to supplement the Solar heating system. This just involves flicking the switch on in the utility room. A pity you didn't phone us but apologies if we didn't explain this clearly enough to you. Thank-you for choosing our Cottage. Warmest wishes to you all from Ireland, Mary, Joe & family

On a beautiful Irish summer day we meandered over rivers and down a country road where we discovered this magical cottage. Much to our delight we were greeted with homemade bread and soup that delighted the taste buds. Quiet with stunning views the cottage would serve as our base as we explored the region over the next week. Our kids loved the property and we found everything we could ever need to make our stay a memorable one. If your going to Ireland (and you should) you needn't look any further for the perfect accommodation.
Owner response:Thank-you so much Joe & Petra. We are delighted you enjoyed your stay so much. We're just back ourselves from yet another wonderful holiday there - this time all 6 of us (including our 3 year old) climbed Cnoc a tSí together for the first time. Will post some photos on Facebook soon. Warmest wishes to you all from Ireland, Mary, Joe & family
