Keywords:  House, cabin, retreat, cottage

When you follow the secluded tree-lined driveway and see this charming country home nestled into 60 acres of expansive open views of the surrounding dairy and horse farms and panoramic views of the Catskills and Berkshire Mountains, you’ll know you’ve come to the right place. Smell the fresh mountain air, feel the cool breezes blowing through the trees, listen to the soft chirping of the birds passing overhead, or the occasional crowing of a rooster from one of the many nearby farms.

The house, originally built as a hunting cabin in the 1960’s, has been expanded and modernized for full year round comfort. A fully equipped open kitchen looks to a cathedral ceilinged living-area with French doors that lead out to a private enclosed porch.

Located just a 1/4 mile from the quaint village of Ancramdale, is where you’ll find The Farmer’s Wife’s Market & Catering Co., The Grainery, serving ice cream and yogurt from the local dairy, Ronnybrook Farms, and a post office. If a bigger town with a large supermarket is what you’re after, take a scenic 10-minute drive to Millerton by travelling east on Route 8.

Millerton, bordering on CT, has a movie theatre that offers both Indie and feature films and houses a café and gallery on the second floor. Explore the many antique stores, restaurants, and a great book store called Oblong Books that has a full floor dedicated to children’s books and games. There is a biking and hiking trail that begins at the old RR depot and winds south through 10 miles of lush paved trails to the town of Amenia.

Copake Lake is only a 10 minute drive north up Route 3 where you can motor boat, water ski, fish, or jet ski. If you take Route 22 north and fork east onto Route 344 you’ll be headed toward the Taconic Park and now a great swimming hole, which was once a quarry. This is a great place for families to cool off or soak up the sun. From here Bash Bish Falls is just a short drive or bike ride away. You can either walk down to an observation area where you can sit on the rocks and enjoy the falls. Or for the more athletic, park at the bottom of the falls and either hike up the path 3/4 mile or climb along the rocks and through the dozens of water pools to where the falls begin.

If you were to continue your drive north on Route 22, and then make a right and head east on Route 23, you will come to the town of Hillsdale. You’ll find continuous antique shops and restaurants along the way. Next, you'll see Catamount Ski Area and a well known 4 star restaurant called The Suisse Hutte. Catamount offers downhill skiing both day and night.

The next stop, and only another few miles further, is the turn-of-the-century New England town of Great Barrington, MA. This town is loaded with boutiques and eateries to satisfy a wide variety of tastes. Continuing through to the end of town and a little further northeast brings you to yet another great ski resort called Butternut Mt. Butternut offers dozens of beautifully groomed slopes, 2 lodges and a snow tubing park.

Open year round, Taconic Lake and State Park, is just 4 miles west of the house. This park has acres and acres of beaches, ballfields, and picnic areas with outdoor barbeque grills. Lifeguards are on duty all summer long in designated swimming zones. Pedal boats and row boats can be rented by the hour. Or if you prefer, bring your own kayack, canoe or windsurf board.

cozy new year's

Guest: Katie H.
Date of Stay: 12/31/11 Review Submitted: 01/03/12

My group of 6 friends enjoyed the house for a cozy New Year's Eve weekend getaway from NYC. The views from the house are beautiful and you feel truly secluded from the town surrounded only by nature. The house was clean and comfortable. The living room was a great size for the group to relax by the fire and play games in the evening. We enjoyed hiking through the woods surrounding the house. We also took a 15 minute drive out to Bash Bish Falls for a hike up the mountain in Taconic State Park to check out the water falls. The owner of the house was kind and communicative. We had a great experience.

A perfect retreat with gorgeous views!

We rented this house for July through September and loved every second of it. The pictures give a very good impression of the interior, which exudes warmth and coziness. It is a much loved and cared for space, everything worked perfectly and was spotless. The entire property is carefully maintained and gorgeous. Lorrie Snyder couldn't be more helpful and responsive, she is the perfect and a very generous landlady. What we loved most was that the cabin is located on top of a hill and has a beautiful view over the valley. It also has a porch where he had delicious meals watching the sunset. Our two toddler kids roamed the hill and were in heaven. You are completely secluded but not too far from the road. The house itself is a much cared for space with a great, wonderfully equipped kitchen and a cozy eating area. The living room is very homey, there is a fire place and a screened in porch (a big benefit during this summer with all the mosquitoes). All three bedrooms are great (the one in the rear of the house could eventually use a new mattress, but our toddlers didn't mind and slept soundly), the bath rooms are perfect. The house offers wireless internet as well. We couldn't recommend it more and will make sure to be back soon.

Breathtaking views!

8 crafty friends rented this place the weekend of the NY Sheep and Wool Festival and it was perfect! A cozy place nestled against the tree line with a spectacular view! The screened porch was by far our favorite spot for the weekend - it allowed nonstop chances to bask in the glorious canopy of autumn leaves. This was a great house for truly getting away from it all!

Charming Cabin

Guest: Justin (New York, NY)

We had a fantastic stay at this cozy home. The house is well appointed, well decorated, and very comfortable. We came across no evidence of mice or mold, and found the house to be very clean. We arrived just after the blizzard and the owner went out of her way to make sure the driveway was plowed for us. We had no problems driving up to the house. And the views are breathtaking! Everyone had a great time cooking, sledding, and relaxing by the fire. We were discussing a summer visit before the weekend was over.

hunting retreat

Guest: julier (long island, ny)
Date of Stay: 12/06/10 Review Submitted: 12/12/10

My husband and I rented this house for a week in December to do some hiking, hunting and relaxing. We weren't disappointed once. The house was exceptionally clean and inviting. The views from every room are beautiful. Hiking through the property was an adventure and provided a great workout with a mix of some meadow, hillside and seriously steep terain. While making coffee one morning we watched several dozen turkey right outside the front porch! The house is conveniently located near two towns- Millerton and Pine Plains. There are many restaurant choices and a few grocery store options. If you have the opportunity have brunch or dinner at The Stissing House. Service was very good and the food was surprisingly impressive.

Great views, Very disappointing visit

Guest: Zoey (NY, NY)
Date of Stay: 07/06/10 Review Submitted: 11/22/10

Terrifically gorgeous views from the deck and screened in porch(the best part of the entire house), but the house shows nicer in pictures than it is. A strong moldy smell throughout. Furniture is in very poor condition, fridge was full of expired food, and polyester sheets from the 70's on lumpy mattresses made this a very disappointing visit. Oh, and the kitchen has mice. Way over-priced for what it is. ** Beware renters with dogs or kids - trees closest to house are ringed in POISON OAK!** Driveway is very steep - could be icy and dangerous in winter - and on a very fast road, so no country walks from the house.

Owner response:This email was sent from Hillary to me, upon her leaving my home on Aug 16th after a 5 wk stay Hi Lorrie Thank you for a lovely stay. The tractor was returned two days ago. We think we left everything in order- if you see an item missing or out of place it is because we moved it out of our sons reach and forgot where it goes back. There are some items in the armoire in your room. Also, my son tripped on the rug coming from the screened in porch and put his hand through the fabric on the side of the couch. It ripped in a long rip straight down. I am so sorry about that. We also taped up cardboard on the lower part of the screen door so my dog would not scratch the screen when she went out the door. The tape left some residue on the door. Please let me know if you see anything else of concern. Hillary I find it very odd that this is the same woman that sent me that departing email. She didn't mention any of the things she listed in her review. The reason being she was angry when I told her I would have to deduct the cost to have my couch repaired from her security deposit. She became irate. She started to trash my home and complain about everything under the sun. I told her I would try and find an inexpensive solution to make the repair. She insisted that my sofa wasn't worth repairing. I finally found an upholsterer that was willing to come to my house, which was not easy to find, and make the repair at a reasonable price. I returned the remainder of her security deposit. She never said a word about being unhappy about anything during her entire stay. I found it unusual that she would complain so only upon leaving. In my defense: There are lots of sheets and towels in the house, more than enough sets of cotton sheets to go around,w/ extra sets of poly/cotton thrown in. The mattresses aren't new, but they're not lulmpy. There is no mold in the house. I also noticed an odor in the back bdrm.I bought an air freshner, within a day the smell disipated. It may have been a critter that got in under the back steps. We get that in the country sometimes. We also get mice on occassion, esp. if the house isn't kept clean. There may have been a few condiments or some butter left in the refrigerator.I was unaware of the poison oak.Her dog rubbed up against it and infected her husband. The driveway is steep, hence the great views but,it's plowed in the winter. My furniture is a mix of antique, art nuevo, art deco,an eclectic mix,in very good condition. The pictures don't lie
