If you'd like to experience living in Hawaii, not the usual canned tourist experience, then this is the way to go. A darling plantation style beach cottage on a calm stretch of beach, centrally located on the island. A typical day: wake up to the sounds of waves, bird song, and roosters make fresh Kauai coffee and watch sun come up from the front porch stroll down bike path to breakfast at either Ono Family Restaurant or Kountry Kitchen rent beach bikes and cruise down the path for a day at the various beaches bike home for BBQ grilling on the porch sunset beach-combing for shells on the beach in front The grocery stores are nearby and the local food wagons serve fabulous specialties. You may find that you don't want to leave to see the rest of the island. Pack light as there's laundry machines and clothes lines. There's plenty of beach toys, towels, lounge chairs, coolers, books, hair dryer, toiletries, sunscreens.... all that you need. Just bring your swimsuit and a change of clothes. The place is clean with not one bug.... this is very hard to achieve in a tropical environment. You'll enjoy the authentic South-seas patina that a beach house acquires over time.Recommended for: Tourists without a car, age 55+, families with teenagers, girls getaway, sightseeing, families with young children, romantic getaway, adventure seekers.

This beach cottage was a good, affordable choice for us. It is clean, has all the basics in place - comfortable beds, well equipped kitchen, nice little porch to sit and enjoy the ocean. Being in the town of Kapaa was very convenient. This location makes traveling to the north or to the south convenient. The roosters at times were annoying but that seems to be often the case on Kauai. The photos accurately reflected this cottage. The owner was available and helpful in every way and not bothersome. We would recommend this propert to a friend or relative. We found the restaurants we tried to be ordinary and felt it was better value and product to buy our own food and prepare it in the well equipped kitchen.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, sightseeing, families with young children, romantic getaway.

A home away from home with a tropical twist. Sit on your lanai and watch the sun come up in the morning, then stroll down the road to the walking path into Kapaa for some local shopping and eats. A perfect spot to come home to every night or just wander across the street to the beach and watch the wind surfers. Perfectly located on the Coconut Coast for travels North and South. Enjoyed our stay immensely and we will be back.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with young children, romantic getaway.

We just returned home yesterday and already miss this place. "Cottage on the Beach" is a perfect title for this rental. It was one of the best vacations our family has ever had. The cottage is quaint and right across the street from a beach and the ocean, so it wasn't far to go to get up in the morning and lay out. We got up early almost every day to watch the beautiful sun rise! The cottage is well equipped with kitchen items and beach supplies (towels, toys, chairs, etc). There is also very nice grill on the deck. The location is centrally located on the east side of Kaua'i, therefore it was short drive to explore other sites and beaches of the island. Larry is a very gracious host, had information about the island on the table, was very willing to answer questions, or willing to give as much privacy as we wanted. If we vacation in Kaua'i again (which I know we are all hoping we do), we definitely would look up the "Cottage on the Beach" property again. Mahalo!!Recommended for: Age 55+, girls getaway, sightseeing, families with young children, romantic getaway, adventure seekers.

The cottage was ok. Living room furniture was a bit run down and uncomfortable to sit on. Kitchen was not what I would call gourmet quality, but there were a fair amount cooking tools and pots/pans. The floor rugs were hard on our bare feet. It was nice to be able to lay in bed and watch and listen to the ocean. It was also nice to have access to a washer and dryer. There were plenty of towels, coolers, and other beach accessory items that we didn't have to buy for our beach trips.Owner response: There are two chairs in the seating area that came from the famous Coco Palms Hotel that are relics and have been in the cottage for awhile. They have since been replaced. The rug is a jute rug which is intended to give the cottage a natural feel, for most people provides a grassy feel to the feet. It also has been replaced. The kitchen is not intended to be a “gourmet kitchen” is a clean, well stock kitchen with all that is needed to cook any meal. Gourmet cooking is about cooking skills not the quality of the items in the kitchen as we cooks know.

We stayed at the Moanakai beach cottage last week during our honeymoon. We showed up late at night and Larry made sure to leave the lights on and the keys were inside on the table. We very much enjoyed our stay there. We recommend keeping the beach-side windows at least cracked open to keep the inside fresh. There is always a trade wind blowing in from this side so the A/C isn't necessary. There is corrosion on a lot of the external metal parts as a result of being right next to the ocean. (that's what you get for being right on the beach). The roosters are loud starting at about 4:30am, but if that bothers you there are plenty of ear plugs in the house. Note that chickens are literally everywhere on the island so you can't avoid them. We chose this place because of the central location -- giving us access to the north and south shores. BEWARE OF TRAFFIC JAMS BETWEEN KAPA'A AND LIHUE though! Also, beware that parking fills up early at Ke'e beach at the end of the road on the north shore. It is best to leave early to avoid traffic and parking issues. Kauai needs to stop building more tourist lodging until the infrastructure catches up! It is important to note that this place is very well equipped! It has every kitchen gadget imaginable, a huge assortment of beach towels, some beach toys, as well as about 20 dvd's, and all of the relevant Kauai guides (including the "ultimate kauai guide" which he placed on the table). This combined with the washer and dryer in the shed next door means you could pack very light -- wish I'd known that before packing for our trip! :-) While we were there, Larry was restoring the house next door, but he was extremely careful not to make any noise while we were around -- we wouldn't have known he was there if his truck wasn't parked out front. He was quiet as a mouse. Before we left he made sure that we wrote down all of the issues we had with the place (which were few and minor). Overall we liked the place and would stay there again. It isn't the Hyatt, but we felt that it gave us an authentic island experience and wouldn't want it any other way.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, girls getaway, families with young children, romantic getaway, adventure seekers.

My wife and I stayed at the house for a week. The house was extremely clean and well maintained. It is located a few hundred feet from the beach walk/bike path that travels along the beach for miles. It was easier to get to the stores by taking the path than driving. The food was great at all the places we ate (The Olympian Cafe in the middle of town, Scotty's for the breakfast buffett, the Bull Shed had excellent steaks). If you are planning on going to a luau, the Smith Family luau is an excellent choice. The food and entertainment were excellent. Our host, Larry Gardner, was always just a phone call away. It was nice to have a washer and dryer available. We did not have to pack as many clothes. The roosters start to crow at around 4:00 in the morning. The locals say this has been going on since the hurricane in 1992. Just carry some ear plugs and you will not even notice them. There are chickens all over the island...they even joked that a new law was being passed that every tourist had to take two home with them when they left. The baby beach was great. You could sit on the beach all day and talk to the locals. Most of the mornings, there were parents with small children playing. Everyone was nice and interesting to talk with about places to eat, places to see and especially for directions. We rented a car and went 287 miles during the week. The Waimea Canyon was a site to see. It is called the Grand Canyon in Kauai. Be sure to take a good camera with you and plenty of sun screen. We hope to return some day and will definitely be calling Larry. If you plan on cooking or going to the grocery store, sign up for the store savings card before buying anything. It will save you a lot of money. Larry...thanks for a great time and we will highly recommend the beach cottage.Recommended for: Sightseeing, families with young children, romantic getaway.

This was a great property with all the amenities we could wish for ... one could even listen to the ocean at night. It was clean and cozy and well maintained and a good place to be near restaruants / beaches etc but not in the middle of a town. The owner was available and very helpful. Beautiful ! We were very happy with our stay.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1
