'Cherche-Midi' sits off the well-known street of the same name, sandwiched between St-Germain des Prés with its vibrant street and café life and the Monumental Sixth and Seventh east of Les Invalides - home to some of Paris' oldest and grandest families. The result is an interesting blend of the two. An area that is 'chic' without being pretentious, that offers a perfectly preserved example of Parisian neighbourhood life.
For the sixth, that, we assure is pretty unique! The authenticity and quality offered by neighbourhood cafés, food shops, and restaurants make for a very special area that typifies the Parisian urban village against a backdrop of chic. After all, this is the sixth and to paraphrase Nile Rogers, "le 6th c'est chic." The myths of Paris café society and intellectual life were born here. Verlaine and Rimbaud drank here; Sartre and Camus scribbled and squabbled here. Existentialists may have surrendered berets to fashion exhibitionists and street artists, but this side of the Seine is still gritty, glossy, and very (rive) gauche. No surprise then that it remains so popular.
The property does not disappoint. A fairly non-descript door leads you off the small (and very quiet) rue Mayet, through a stunning and profoundly peaceful garden to the apartment's building - a fine example of elegant 19th century architecture. On the fourth floor (with lift), the apartment's aspect is predominantly South-facing, with a number of rooms also facing East and West. All windows look onto surrounding gardens. This is calmness itself.
It has only just been fully renovated (June 2005) and offers the highest standard of accommodation. A lot of thought has been put into the choice of fabrics and furnishings that make the most of the great light in this South-facing property and fit well with the traditional yet contemporary feel.
The apartment sleeps up to six. It comprises three-double bedrooms (one British King-Size double, one French double, two singles), one en-suite shower room, one em-suite bathroom with tub, separate water closet, drawing room/dining room, fully-equipped kitchen with dishwasher as well as a washer. The third bedroom can easily be used as a separate dining room for parties of four or less in which case the 2 singles are removed. The double doors have been removed from this third room for pure aesthetic reasons without in any way compromising the sense of this room being a separate space (with in fact the ensuite bathroom).
The property's exact address is on rue Mayet in Paris. Most major tourists sites are accessible by foot. You can walk through St-Germain des Prés to the Seine river and the Musée d'Orsay in ten minutes. Straight across the river from here is the Louvre, the Tuileries Gardens, and the Palais Royal. Transport links are excellent. Closest Metro stops include Sevres-Babylone, Duroc, and Vaneau and bus routes going all over the city pass within minutes of the apartment. And if you forget to get some shopping in, fear not - Le Bon Marché, Paris' oldest, prettiest, and swishest department store is just down the road. Just next door is La Grande Epicerie where you'll rub shoulders with the city's rich, seeking out fab foodstuffs from all over the world.
