Porticello is a small fisherman village being part of the municipality of Santa Flavia.
The origin and development of the little town comes from the Tuna fishing activity.
From the 16th century the fishermen settled permanently in this small seaside town that began to grow very quickly becoming an important fishing centre.
The town, called at that time 'Pirrera', which hosted in its pits generations of fishermen, was renamed 'Porticello' (small port) because of the natural bay called San Nicolicchio around which grew the new location and where you can still admire, almost intact, the older houses.
Porticello has so many secrets and stories. According to the legend, some fishermen found at the bottom of the sea the picture of the 'Candle Madonna' (Madonna del Lume). She became the protector of the village. The picture is still visible in the rustic church dedicated to the Madonna.
The geographical position, the beauty of the coast and its many spots overlooking the clear blue sea, the many restaurants offering the famous 'Porticello fish' still prepared according to traditional recipes, make this place a gem that survived almost intact during the centuries. Imagine, it is still possible to buy fish directly from the fishermen at the port, not in the market but from the boats, immerged in the sounds, shouts and phrases of the markets of the past.
Your journey to discover the beauty of Sicily can begin starting form this simple and authentic place! Discover the wonderful little coves where you can relax and enjoy the beautiful sunsets from the surrounding hills!
About: We are two very curious persons with the desire of discovering the world and its inhabitants, finding out the simplicity of small gestures and beauty beyond appearance. That is why, with our small business, we would like to give the opportunity to foreigners to discover our beautiful city, its secrets, our world, hidden corners, and the stories that are still whispering in the alleys, the ruins, the monuments and the markets ...
Why Casteldaccia: I decided to rent this house because I want to transmit the love, the passion, the courtesy, the simplicity and the warmth of the Sicilian land!
The Unique Benefits at this Apartment: Solunto : the Mount Catalfano offers a spectacular view overlooking the famous 'Conca d'Oro' which stretches from Capo Zafferano to Capo Cefalù.
This is where lie the ruins of the ancient Greco-Punic city Solunto where you can still see many examples of its magnificent past.
S. Elia: it is a small seaside town characterized by numerous small rocky coves and crystal clear sea. Unlike Porticello, located on the plain along the coast, S.Elia is perched on the rocks with a mosaic of narrow streets and small squares.
Solanto: it is a small town with a few hundred inhabitants and houses. Here the time seems to have stopped. You can still admire the old village ladies, sitting in front of their houses, repairing the fishermen’s nets…a real journey into the past!
S. Flavia: a small town which was built in the 18th century around the Villa Filangeri which is now the seat of the municipality and it is located next to a beautiful church.
Bagheria: it is a small town that dates back to the 17th century, built around the villa Butera. In its chaotic streets hides the most beautiful architectural Sicilian works of the 17th and 18th century: many splendid country villas built by noble people from Palermo who had followed the prince of Butera. Villa Palagonia (famous for its monsters sculptures) and Villa Trabia are very interesting to visit.
Cefalù: It is a small beautiful city, the seat of an important archbishopric. It is very famous for its beautiful cathedral and offers to the tourists one of the finest architectural examples of the Norman era of Frederick II. Cefalù is also famous for its red rocks beaches.
