Puako neighborhood and reef - our house in center, surrounded by trees
Location: Puako, Kohala Coast, Big Island, Hawaii, USA (Just minutes from world famous Hapuna Beach State Park) View Map
Accommodations: House, 2 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 2 Baths (Sleeps 5)
Pau Hana means finished with work - this is where to go to relax! Our two bedroom, two bath home by the ocean in this quiet beachfront community on the Kohala Coast is right next to the best snorkeling reef on the Big Island. Swimming, snorkeling and scuba in clear water with amazing sealife is right across the street, or just bask with the turtles on the sandy beach.
Puako is truly an Old Hawaiian Beach Town which feels far from the resorts and tourists, but is an easy drive to "Civilization." (Kona Airport is only 25 miles away.)
Puako Beach Drive is a quiet, 3 mile long dead-end road along the coast between Hapuna Beach and the Mauna Lani Resort area with about 100 homes, one condominium building, and a well-stocked general store. There are beach access areas about every one-quarter mile along the road with areas for swimming, easy kayak and diving access, and an extensive reef and tide pools to explore. Our home is on the quiet end of the road with a sandy beach access directly across the street. You can see the ocean from the yard.
The house has open floor plan: living room with high vaulted ceilings, skylights and ceiling fans, a modern well equipped kitchen, and a dining area. The living room and dining area open onto a covered lanai with a barbecue and a large landscaped yard. Spacious bedrooms both have queen beds, air conditioning and ceiling fans. The master bedroom has private bath, the second bedroom and bath are on the opposite end of house for plenty of privacy. We have added a queen sleeper sofa in the living room. We have high speed cable for ethernet or wireless internet access.
You can swim, snorkel, or scuba right across the street; this summer we have seen mantas and eagle rays as well as our regular abundance of fish. Visit the turtles in the tide pools while having morning coffee and watch magnificent sunsets with your evening cocktail. We are about 1/4 mile from the end of the road and Paniau beach with super easy scuba access, and a surf break in the winter. Walk 15 minutes along the coastline to Mauna Lani and Orchid resorts, or take a 5 minute drive to Waialea Bay, a quiet protected sandy beach without crowds just around the corner. Also close-by, Hapuna, Mauna Kea, and Waikoloa Resort("A"-bay) beaches are considered the best in the state.
Upcountry Waimea Town is just a 15 minute drive, but be sure to bring a sweatshirt. Hiking into Polulu Valley is a great warm up for Waipio. Drive down to Kona to tour - a great day trip but you'll be so happy to get back home. You can even drive to Hilo and on to tour the volcano- every visit holds new adventures!!

Why the Owner Chose Puako
We discovered Puako on a weekend dive trip. On the boat dive with Kohala divers we got to swim with a whale shark for 1/2 hour!!

When you aren't at the beach, our house is super clean and comfortable, lots of light and breezes, big rooms and everything you need to feel at home. And NO roosters to wake up to! High points: -mornings and evenings by the beach -walking to the end of the road with snorkle gear to commune with the fishies and turtles -having a coffee grinder, espresso maker and a coffee pot to enjoy Kona'sfinest brew -having the plastic and glassware to enjoy Kona's second finest brew -extremely comfortable beds -nice artwork, esp. the ceiling fish -glorious sky viewing, stars and sunsets -wonderful breezes blowing through the screens I highly recommend this rental property and will be suggesting it to others.
