The rear bedroom has twin beds, step-out balcony windows overlooking the pomegranate tree, a walk-in closet, and tiled bath and shower. The house, Casa del Granado, takes its name from this tree.
Both bedrooms have private stairways to joining rooftop terraces with extraordinary views of the Parroquia and town, lake, mountains, and sunsets. Lie in the sun on chaise lounges or sit in shade under the tiled veranda set atop four cantera columns.
You’ll love your choices for relaxation and enjoyment throughout this thoroughly modern home with 18th century walls. In the living room you’ll find overstuffed sofas and chairs, a hand-built fireplace, and thick, warmly colored walls. In the dining room you may gather for meals at a round parquet-topped table. The brightly tiled kitchen is ready for cooking or for being served.
A winding path from the entrance foyer leads through a bamboo grove to a stone patio under the spreading pomegranate tree, by a sprinkling tile and stone fountain. Sit outdoors at stone tables or in the cool shade of the outdoor sala with its overstuffed sofas and chairs and private fireplace.
The sleeper study (sunroom) off the outdoor sala features a twin trundle bed along with desk, half bath, desk, TV/DVD, and views of the patio and fountain. Another half bath is found by the entrance foyer.
The home was designed by Eliazar Torres to combine 18th century charm with 21st century convenience; professionally decorated by Carl Selph to delight the senses; plantscaped by Tim Wachter to create an oasis of rest and calm. This home is in the best area of town, across the street from the home of actress Margarita Gralia, close to buses and within short walks to everything, only three blocks from the Jardin. There is parking on the street and a supervised facility is close by.
Ariana, the maid, comes to clean and change the linens. She can also cook for you. The property is also professionally managed by an English speaking manager who is always on call in case you have any problems. Susan Page, noted author, San Miguel resident, and founder of the SMA Authors' Sala, calls this house one of her top five favorites in town! Centro Colonial Charm - Stunning Views - Rave Reviews!
Year Purchased: 2004
Why the Owner Chose Centro Historico
The home was a ruina when we bought it, and it was an adventure bringing it back to life. Building in Mexico is so magical. The house is like a work of art to us that we get to walk through and live in! San Miguel de Allende is a UNESCO World Heritage site full of beauty and history. We walk everywhere, and love our property's privacy, quiet, and stunning views.
The Unique Benefits at this House
The house itself is a sweet place to enjoy any time, and it changes through the day as the light and temperatures change. We love walking to the Jardin in the evening to join in the "paseo," and visiting the nearby Parque Juarez. Walking the streets, and visiting the town's many shop and restaurants, is great fun. We love the vibrant cultural life of San Miguel. And visits to the Charco, the botanic garden, and the hot springs, are also treat!
Owner's Map of Centro Historico
We three "ran away from home" to San Miguel de Allende for a six month "sabbatical" in 2004. We picked San Miguel for its beauty, history, and vibrant arts community, and because it reminded Stephanie of the neighborhood in which she grew up - San Angel, in Mexico City. The house location is Montes de Oca 12 in Historic Centro.

The pictures on this site do not tell the whole story. This is a great place to relax and enjoy a slower, more gracious way of life. My two favorite spots in the house were the outdoor salon with a fireplace to start and to end the day and the roof top terrace to enjoy a book, be entertained by beautiful birds and to have a cocktail at sunset. The owner was helpful and prompt in answering questions and making sure that everything was in the ready. San Miquel de Allende is a charming UNESCO heritage city with friendly, caring people and food that was just plain yummy. There are many things to do including theater, house walks, cooking classes, art galleries, walks of the historic district, yoga classes, etc as well as day excursions to other nearby cities and archeological sites. I would definitely recommend this charming home and city to anyone. PS Do not miss the ginger margaritas and delicious food at The Fat Mermaid, just a block and a half away.

This is a beautiful home with a spectacular rooftop view of the lovely city of SMA. Very comfortable master suite and lovely attached bath made for a relaxing stay. Location was very convenient to all the sights of SMA, restaurants, and cantinas. Hummingbirds visited the rooftop every morning. Experiencing Day of the Dead was a wonderful experience, and we recommend it strongly -- it's an immersion in Mexican culture, replete with color and music and energy. Thank you for a wonderful week!

Owner response:A previous guest at Casa del Granado was in San Miguel at the same time as this couple, and wrote us to say: "The weather here is perfect, still in the 80s during the day and not too cool at night. It is our first experience in SMA in November and so far we really like it. Also, no tourists to speak of."

Two weeks in the "wonder " that is San Miguel de Allende and at Casa del Granado and I am in love. Travelled to San Miguel de Allende for the first time with three girlfriends and will definitely be going back. Jay and Stephanie have done a magnificent job of combining old world charm with modern comfort in their beautiful home. The home is well-stocked, has comfortable beds with good linens, a 360 degree view of an enchanting magical town and, among other things, a cozy outdoor sala which was a quiet and warm place to sit with a fire blazing during a couple of nights of rain. The house was immaculately clean due to the efforts of Ariana who came three times a week and always had a warm smile on her face. We were able to walk absolutely everywhere and were charmed by the delightful cobblestoned streets, the restaurants, the people and all the activity at night in El Jardin. Montes de Oca, the street where the house is located is a little on the steeper side, but if four middle-aged women can master it I think anyone can. As Jay and Stephanie have noted - San Miguel can erupt in noise for apparently no reason but this only added to the charm of the city. The rooftop patio is large and a wonderful place to start your day with a coffee, a book and a blanket. This was a very different vacation from the beaches of Mazatlan where I have spent a lot of time over the past 12 years and I will absolutely be spending more time in San Miguel. Thanks to Jay and Stephanie for creating such a beautiful oasis.

We had the best vacation ever in your house this year, and we've been to San Miguel 10 times. We really enjoyed being so close to centro. Ariana was delightful--she and I laughed a lot because my Spanish was about as good as her English, and we never stopped talking. She cooked some good things for us, probably not what her guests usually ask for. We doubled her tip for five weeks and gave her a gift. On our last day we got to meet the middle two of her children, and we talked to her husband twice. Lovely family. Dick always takes a new basketball to San Miguel to play at Juarez Park, and he gave it to her children with a Texas State T-shirt. Thanks for a wonderful month.

Honestly, we felt that San Miguel might be a little to tame for us. We wanted to see art, culture and dive/dance bars. After a week in Mexico city we were ready. But this city tamed us. This house was a respite. So much space for three friends. Long afternoons spent napping. Long evenings watching sunsets and sipping tequila. I hesitate to say more because I would prefer to keep it a secret. But, honestly you would be lucky to spend time here. Next year house, see you next year.

This was our second visit to San Miguel in the last 3 years. We loved every minute of it and know we will be back again and again. Casa del Granado was perfect for us and ideally located in Centro (a 10 minute walk to El Jardin). The house has been lovingly restored and provides all the modern amenities we are all used to but has all the charm of a lovely colonial casita, complete with courtyard, outside sala and outstanding views of the city. The sunsets were AMAZING! San Miguel de Allende offers so much, it is hard to say all in a short review. Suffice to say that it has restaurants, culture, art, color, music, sports, and a carefree relaxed environment. My husband and I are not artists but it is easy to see why writers and artists of all kinds would find inspiration in such a lovely place. The Mexican people are a joy to be with if you are interested in imbedding yourselves in their rich culture. Can't wait to go back next year!

We were so pleased to vacation in this beautiful home. Lovely town, home, people! We so enjoyed exploring the neighborhoods and eating out at some very good restaurants. The views from the top terraces are quite spectacular and I will remember spending many hours pleasantly looking out at the town and listening to the church bells. Ariana was very helpful and we enjoyed meeting her. The only drawback is that a week is too short, so we will have to come back
