The pictures on this site do not tell the whole story. This is a great place to relax and enjoy a slower, more gracious way of life. My two favorite spots in the house were the outdoor salon with a fireplace to start and to end the day and the roof top terrace to enjoy a book, be entertained by beautiful birds and to have a cocktail at sunset. The owner was helpful and prompt in answering questions and making sure that everything was in the ready. San Miquel de Allende is a charming UNESCO heritage city with friendly, caring people and food that was just plain yummy. There are many things to do including theater, house walks, cooking classes, art galleries, walks of the historic district, yoga classes, etc as well as day excursions to other nearby cities and archeological sites. I would definitely recommend this charming home and city to anyone. PS Do not miss the ginger margaritas and delicious food at The Fat Mermaid, just a block and a half away.

This is a beautiful home with a spectacular rooftop view of the lovely city of SMA. Very comfortable master suite and lovely attached bath made for a relaxing stay. Location was very convenient to all the sights of SMA, restaurants, and cantinas. Hummingbirds visited the rooftop every morning. Experiencing Day of the Dead was a wonderful experience, and we recommend it strongly -- it's an immersion in Mexican culture, replete with color and music and energy. Thank you for a wonderful week!

Owner response:A previous guest at Casa del Granado was in San Miguel at the same time as this couple, and wrote us to say: "The weather here is perfect, still in the 80s during the day and not too cool at night. It is our first experience in SMA in November and so far we really like it. Also, no tourists to speak of."

Two weeks in the "wonder " that is San Miguel de Allende and at Casa del Granado and I am in love. Travelled to San Miguel de Allende for the first time with three girlfriends and will definitely be going back. Jay and Stephanie have done a magnificent job of combining old world charm with modern comfort in their beautiful home. The home is well-stocked, has comfortable beds with good linens, a 360 degree view of an enchanting magical town and, among other things, a cozy outdoor sala which was a quiet and warm place to sit with a fire blazing during a couple of nights of rain. The house was immaculately clean due to the efforts of Ariana who came three times a week and always had a warm smile on her face. We were able to walk absolutely everywhere and were charmed by the delightful cobblestoned streets, the restaurants, the people and all the activity at night in El Jardin. Montes de Oca, the street where the house is located is a little on the steeper side, but if four middle-aged women can master it I think anyone can. As Jay and Stephanie have noted - San Miguel can erupt in noise for apparently no reason but this only added to the charm of the city. The rooftop patio is large and a wonderful place to start your day with a coffee, a book and a blanket. This was a very different vacation from the beaches of Mazatlan where I have spent a lot of time over the past 12 years and I will absolutely be spending more time in San Miguel. Thanks to Jay and Stephanie for creating such a beautiful oasis.

We had the best vacation ever in your house this year, and we've been to San Miguel 10 times. We really enjoyed being so close to centro. Ariana was delightful--she and I laughed a lot because my Spanish was about as good as her English, and we never stopped talking. She cooked some good things for us, probably not what her guests usually ask for. We doubled her tip for five weeks and gave her a gift. On our last day we got to meet the middle two of her children, and we talked to her husband twice. Lovely family. Dick always takes a new basketball to San Miguel to play at Juarez Park, and he gave it to her children with a Texas State T-shirt. Thanks for a wonderful month.

Honestly, we felt that San Miguel might be a little to tame for us. We wanted to see art, culture and dive/dance bars. After a week in Mexico city we were ready. But this city tamed us. This house was a respite. So much space for three friends. Long afternoons spent napping. Long evenings watching sunsets and sipping tequila. I hesitate to say more because I would prefer to keep it a secret. But, honestly you would be lucky to spend time here. Next year house, see you next year.

This was our second visit to San Miguel in the last 3 years. We loved every minute of it and know we will be back again and again. Casa del Granado was perfect for us and ideally located in Centro (a 10 minute walk to El Jardin). The house has been lovingly restored and provides all the modern amenities we are all used to but has all the charm of a lovely colonial casita, complete with courtyard, outside sala and outstanding views of the city. The sunsets were AMAZING! San Miguel de Allende offers so much, it is hard to say all in a short review. Suffice to say that it has restaurants, culture, art, color, music, sports, and a carefree relaxed environment. My husband and I are not artists but it is easy to see why writers and artists of all kinds would find inspiration in such a lovely place. The Mexican people are a joy to be with if you are interested in imbedding yourselves in their rich culture. Can't wait to go back next year!

The house is well designed and perfect for 1 or 2 couples as the separate access to the bedrooms and decks provides plenty of privacy We like the location and not only as it is only a short walk to the main plaza but also there are great views from the roof deck Overall it was a great place to stay and we would recommend it for short or long stays in San Miguel de Allende, a wonderful small city where you can walk to shops and restaurants

I,my husband, sister & her husband spent a week this past November at Casa del Granado in San Miguel- What a wonderful experience to stay in this beautifully restored home that lived up to every single thing we had been told to expect from owner Jay Vogt- Every comfort was included ( don't forget the capable, friendly housekeeper) & we felt that we truly were sharing their lovely home- The surrounding city, restaurants, shopping, people, & safety in walking around the area were absolutely what the owners had told us to expect-We look forward to renting this lovely home again-- Pat- Swampscott, MA

We were so pleased to vacation in this beautiful home. Lovely town, home, people! We so enjoyed exploring the neighborhoods and eating out at some very good restaurants. The views from the top terraces are quite spectacular and I will remember spending many hours pleasantly looking out at the town and listening to the church bells. Ariana was very helpful and we enjoyed meeting her. The only drawback is that a week is too short, so we will have to come back

I'm just back from two weeks stay at 12 Montes des Oca in San Miguel Allende. It was a wonderful experience. Your home was representative of the inside/outside style of architecture in San Miguel that makes the houses feel virtually endless. Spread over three floors and several courtyards, the Mexican plan made a two bedroom facility into a mansion! Furthermore, the way in which you've appointed the home with wonderful sculptures and period furniture added to the sense of elegance the entire property. There are many things that one could say about how lovely San Miguel and its surrounding are, e.g., the many things to do, the experience of the Mexican people continuously celebrating themselves, the shopping, the day trips to the hot springs at La Gruta, or the way in which the Bibliotecha functions as such a phenomenal cultural center, especially for gringos. But, I think the feeling of great security I had in San Miguel might be most noteworthy. I rode into town from the Leon airport with a guy who is a drummer for Van Morrison and other stars. Rick described the relief he felt in being in San Miguel, a "place where I can roam around anywhere at any time of night or day and feel safe." I decided to test out this assertion to the full extent my sixty five year old body and mind desired, and I found it to be absolutely accurate. If the only thing one knew about the US came from sensational news story, one would never come here or leave the house. And the spate of scary stories coming out of Mexico might make one even more concerned. But, here's the word from someone who was just there, "The scene is cool." There is some weirdness with Federalis walking around armed with machine guns and achieving no discernible objective. Just remember the same set of cats are sitting behind one way glass in limos all over the US. And, I would say that one such as I with a sensitive stomach needs to be particularly cautious because there are lots of little ameobae waiting to chew up your guts, but that shouldn't put off the adventurous. Let SMA take you back in time 200 years and let Jay and Stephanie help you do it in style.

The house has charm and plenty of character. Everything we needed was there and more. The combination of historic elements and modern amenities is terrific. There are plenty of places to relax inside and out. The town [and all it has to offer] is very accessible on foot and yet there is a special feel in being up in the hills. The views from the roof included fireworks one night during our visit.

We stayed in the house for the month of July 2010, and were very disappointed. When it rained, it took 2 people to open the front door because the door swelled. Also, the street is so steep taxi's do not go up or down it during the rain. The bathroom on the bottom floor flooded and caused a sour smell which permeated the downstairs. On the up side, the city was lovely and the maid was pleasant and accommodating.
Owner response:We regret any difficulties the rains caused. Locals say 2010 was an unseasonably strong year for rains. Normally they fall hard briefly in summer afternoons, and then the sun returns. We offered this guest 24-hour access to our property management company to adjust the doors. The street to the house is not steep, but the street above is, and perhaps for those few minutes of rain some taxis choose not to enter the street at all. We wouldn’t know, as we enjoy the walk.

Your lovely home has fallen straight from heaven. Our days in SMA could not have been more enjoyable, I walked the many hills, rested in the Jardin, heard mariachis and had margaritas. It is a precious, flavorful city - now I understand perfectly your decision to have there a nest there - so nice and well located. Though we leave this beautiful city and the oasis of your house we will remember the sunsets - most particularly the last, when the sky looked like it wanted to break. Also Ariana has been very kind, and the bed was great. Thank you for letting us spend unforgettable days in your home and city.

The four of us arrived at Montes de Oca, Number 12, with great anticipation. The old cobble stone street and the colorful walls of the houses surrounding "our new house" were just the beginning of the beauty that would be part of our seven day stay in San Miguel de Allende. The entry with the candles, the greenery and the fountain was one of the first "Ohhh how beautiful" words out of our mouths. There were many more to follow. One the most beautiful sights was on the rooftop patio when the sun was going down directly behind the cross on the church. It looked like the cross was illuminated by red and pink and blue rays. It was a very spiritual experience. But, of course, there was also the food, the stores, the music, the art, and some of the friendliest people we have met. I hope there are still some things left in the stores after Yvette got through shopping! Laura walked on the cobble stone streets as if they were all flat -- she could have been walking a marathon. Phyllis was the calm one who kept us in line and was especially happy being in the Jardin or staying at the Casa de Granado reading a book. As for me, well, I couldn't stop dancing to the mariachi groups that play around the Jardin. Thank you Jay and Stephanie for sharing your beautiful house. And thanks to Aurelia for the gourmet food she fixed.

We had a great time in San Miguel. It is a quaint and beautiful town. We had a lot of fun and even our Spanish improved. We really liked your house. The only problem (not really a problem) was that we were there during the rainy season and we had to wait for the rain to pass to walk from one part to another. None of the rooms are bad to hand out in! Ariana was great and everything was fine. We had no problems at all.

We have very much enjoyed staying In Montes de Oca #12 enormously. The house works very well and we have got good use of all of it including the outdoor sala that has become one of our favorite spots. The neighborhood is also very nice and the neighbors very pleasant. The only thing that needs a bit more adaptation on our part are the dogs at night. At the same time we know this is also part of San Miguel life. Thanks also to Lucy who has been a great help. San Miguel won our hearts last year and living in this beautiful nest has made it all the more enjoyable. We learned this visit that one month is not enough, and will double our stay in the future.

We had an amazing time in your lovely warm house. The roof patio must have one of the best views in San Miguel and we spent sunsets there eating and drinking and relaxing. You have done such a great job decorating the house, and we felt instantly comfortable there. The location is easy (just a walk down to the central square which is always alive with events and folks just hanging out, to the market, etc.) but it is also secluded, quiet and private. What a sweet place. If we get out act together we will be back there soon.

We adored your beautiful home. It was by far the best equipped house we have ever rented. You must have had fun decorating - it was so pretty. We loved the ancient feel with all of the modern conveniences. The 2nd story patio was used daily and most days the rooftop. We were careful and got used to the stairs. It is a lovely location! Your maid was delightful. We can't think of anything we wished for. We always appreciate it when there are a few spices and salt and pepper so we don't have to buy basics like that. You can use us for a reference anytime. Probably coming back next year!

It was really great to get to know the spot you've chosen as a place to get away--San Miguel de Allende--even just a little. I can really see why you chose it. Secondly, I just love what you've done with your place. It's just fabulous. I just love every nook and cranny. The entry, the living room, the kitchen, the exterior hallway (with the bamboo plants) to the back where you have that seating area and office space, the patios, the roof garden--I just loved them all. The roof garden was reminiscent of the roof garden at the place in Florence we stayed last summer. And, I love the found objects you used to decorate. You've done a great job. I've mentioned the town to several people, many of whom knew about it. I've told them about your place just in case they are ever looking for a place to rent down there. Thank you so much for sharing the town and your home.

From the moment we entered San Miguel de Allende we were intrigued. That intrigue heightened as we open the door to 12 Mont de Oca. We stepped into another world of mystique and beauty that is difficult to put into words. The Casa at 12 Mont de Oca is just enchanting. The views from the upper patio are spectacular and calming to the soul. The rooms, decorated superbly in traditional Mexican decor, transport you to another culture in another time. The sound of the garden fountain, the hominess of the kitchen, the comfort of the sitting rooms, the inner garden with it's chill chasing fireplace all combine to make your stay at San Miguel so comfortable you will feel as if you have lived there for years. San Miguel itself? It is quaint and calm and beautiful beyond description. The Jarden calls to you each day where you are free to shop, dine, snack, sleep with the sun in your face, or just be among the local population. There are just too many good experiences and wonderful memories of San Miguel to list them all. If you go (and you should) be sure to walk the stone inlaid streets and pay heed to the architecture of the centuries. The doors of san Miguel; amazing. San Miguel de Allende is a magical wonderful experience and we can honestly express that we have only have one regret from our entire 8 day stay. We regret that we had to leave.

We had a great stay. I loved the San Miguel locals. I got to know a few of the neighbors-especially the older woman who lives across the street to the right a house and the kids next door. The church bells and garbage calls took a few mornings to get used to (we aren't morning people!), but I loved feeling a part of a somewhat local neighborhood. Next time I return, it will be to study more Spanish and drive outside the area more with some time in Mexico City. We were fortunate to see the New Years fireworks from the rooftop. I could not ask for a more perfect setting. Thanks.

I just returned last night to Vancouver after a very rewarding trip to Mexico. I am writing to convey my thanks for making the trip that much more enjoyable. Your home in San Miguel is fabulous! I enjoyed it immensely. Your home has, most obviously, been a labour of love. Not only will I be personally interested in renting the property in the future, I have many clients and friends who would be most interested as well. And if you like, I can also ensure that your property is on our agency recommended list. The only downside of being on that list is that you may receive more calls/contact/interest than you want or can (or want to) handle. Let me know if that is of interest. Regardless, I look forward to staying in touch and to renting your most beautiful and historical home in San Miguel de Allende sometime soon.

What a wonderful October we had in San Miguel. One of the best parts of the trip was staying in your lovely, colorful home at Montes de Oca #12. We cooked in your well-equipped and charming kitchen. In the evenings we studied our Spanish lessons on the covered downstairs terrace, then went to the roof for a glass of wine and enjoyed the amazing view of the Parroquia. We met our friendly neighbors and stopped into the handy little store at the foot of the hill for things we’d forgotten at the market. The short walk to Jardin was a huge plus as was your charming housekeeper who always seems to smile. We loved our large, comfortable bedrooms and all that hot water! We learned that Montes de Oca is somewhat famous: artists seem to favor this street as a subject. All you have to do is step out the door to understand why. It’s truly a special place.

We learned that Montes de Oca is somewhat famous: artists seem to favor this street as a subject. All you have to do is step out the door to understand why. It’s truly a special place.
