Private Homes house description
Spectacular views and 8 miles to downtown...
The moment you enter this unique desert home you will see the magnificent Santa Catalina and Rincon Mountains through a wall of glass.
Located on the WEST side of Tucson in the Tucson Mountain foothills, the home is convenient to Downtown as well as freeway access. The nearest cross streets are El Camino del Cerro at Tortolita. You may map quest the intersection for an approximate location.
Built in the territorial style of adobe brick on 1.4 lush acres, this 2100-square-foot home embraces the indoor/outdoor style of desert living.
Beautifully integrated into the landscape, this special place provides an unusual degree of privacy without isolation. It is located in a quiet neighborhood very convenient to I-10 (three miles) and downtown and the University of Arizona and downtown (eight miles.) Just up the street a few miles is the El Camino del Cerro Trail Head for hiking. Several public and private golf courses are nearby. Day trips to Kartchner Caverns, Tombstone, Bisbee, The Sorona Desert Museum are a cinch.
The terraced and fully enclosed yard and garden feature a deep, black-bottom pool and spa, a covered outdoor kitchen (gas barbecue, refrigerator, sink), lots of native vegetation.
The three bedrooms are arranged on one side of the home. A dining room that seats six, well-equipped kitchen, and den with a 42' flat panel TV with DVD is on the other side of the home. In between the two wings is the living room with a high, pitched, and beamed ceiling, wall of glass with French doors to the patio, and wood-burning fireplace. There is original artwork throughout the rooms.
However, the 'room' that is most used is out-of-doors and is accessible through sets of French doors from the den, master bedroom, and living room. This outdoor living room - enclosed by the house on three sides and open to the view, patio, and pool on the fourth - is fully covered by the roof and lit by three skylights. You can enjoy being outside all year and take refuge from the harsh desert sun. There are four wonderfully comfortable patio club chairs with ottomans and a travertine dining table that seats six. It is truly a wonderful place to relax.
As day becomes night and the suns sets behind the Tucson Mountains, you will marvel at the magnificent play of reflected light on the Catalina, Rincon, and Tortolita Mountains to the north and east. As the desert night settles in the twinkling lights of the city below will mesmerize you.
The master bedroom is adjacent to the patio and is stylishly furnished with an oh-so-comfortable upholstered leather king-size bed. The bath is attached and has a walk-in closet and tiled shower.
The guest bedrooms each have one queen-size bed and share an adjacent full bath. The beds are all made up with high quality linens and pillows. The home accommodates a maximum of six guests.
Hand-made, Mexican clay, saltillo tiles cover the floors throughout the home. There is an additional half bath adjacent to the den. The two-car garage is attached and has direct access to the kitchen as well as a washer and dryer.
We know you will enjoy your stay at our special desert home. We have tried to think of every detail possible to make your time here comfortable and memorable.
We have owned and operated Catalina Park Inn Bed and Breakfast near the University of Arizona since 1994 so we have a long record of providing guests with a high level of hospitality.

We spent a week at this wonderful home, and it wasn't enough. The view from the patio was spectacular and the home delightful. It is by far the best vacation property we have ever rented. We came with another couple and they were as delighted as we were. We would love to return.

I rented this home for the week of Thanksgiving for my family and we had a wonderful relaxing time. The owners were wonderful to work with and the place was immaculate. The home was pretty close to everything we set out to do ie: Sabino Canyon, Arizona Sonora Desert Museum, San Xavier Del Bac Cathedral. We also enjoyed the trails near by as a good walk!

Private Outdoor and Pool Area
This house exceeded my expectations. It was spotless, warm and inviting, well appointed with flatscreen televisions, a stereo system both indoors and outdoors, and high quality linens and towels. The outdoor space was amazing with excellent furniture, a clean pool and hottub and great bbq area with mini fridge. The bedrooms are far enough away from each other to give privacy for two couples travelling together. I would rent this home again!

Could not have been more perfect...
Could not have been more perfect...
My 10 day stay in Tucson could not have been more perfect, and I have this property (and its awesome owners) to thank. Before I booked my vacation, Mark worked with me to address all of my questions and concerns. Upon my arrival at the property, he gave me a tour of the house, showed me all of its ins-and-outs, and ensured that I knew how to contact him if I had any further questions. Mark was helpful from beginning to end without ever being intrusive; I really felt like it was "my" home for the duration of my stay, but I knew that if I needed assistance he was only a phone call away. As for the property itself...it was ideal. While the pictures accurately reflect the rental's appearance, they do not do justice—you really have to see it to believe how lovely it is. I spent the majority of my time at the property enjoying the outdoor living area and the pool. Although it is very close to town, the outdoor area is unbelievably private, and I honestly felt like I was enjoying my own personal resort (complete with my own soundtrack, thanks to the outdoor speakers). The only drawback is that this property has forever ruined the idea of staying somewhere with a shared pool :-) The home was quite clean, well-maintained, and well-stocked, and I was pleased to find a guest book for easy reference on the operation of everything from the air conditioner to the heated spa (and even a handy-dandy guide to what wildlife one should be aware of in the Tucson area). While I felt that I had truly gotten "away from it all" at the property, "it all" was close by and convenient when I needed groceries, wanted to go shopping or see a movie (or even rent one—though Blockbuster has closed down, there is an excellent video rental store, Casa Video, just a few miles away), or felt like going out to eat. (FYI, I have a gluten intolerance and there were plenty of fabulous options for dining gluten-free—or free from other allergens—in the area. I referred to www.glutenfreetucson.com regularly and was never disappointed.) I used a GPS to find my way around town, and it seems that nearly everything I wanted or needed to access during my stay was between 5 and 15 miles from the property. All in all, this rental encompassed everything I was looking for in a vacation. It is beautiful, serene, private, and convenient, and the owners are just wonderful. I would most certainly recommend this property to friends or family, and I will definitely be going back again, myself.

Owner response: Thanks so much for your wonderful review! We are glad you thought the place looked better than the pictures and not the other way around. The pictures will be redone soon. Everyone loves to spend time in the outdoor living area. It is just a great place to relax and enjoy the mountain view. And thanks for leaving the place in squeaky-clean condition. You were the perfect guests! Hope to see you again sometime. Our Best, Mark and Paul Casa Amapola Tucson
Exceeded our expectations!
Exceeded our expectations!
Our stay at Casa Amapola exceeded our expectations in every way. The setting and views are more beautiful than the photos could possibly show. The home is furnished with beautiful, unique artwork and crafts in ever room of the home. Linens, furnishings were stylish and comfortable. Every household amenity was provided and in working order. The location was great for heading out for hiking or heading into town. The owners were attentive and flexible about accommodating an additional stay of two days when our flight was canceled. Perfect, perfect, perfect.

Fabulous Home and Location!
Fabulous Home and Location!
We enjoyed this great home for a short two weeks. The pictures don't do it justice, and Mark and Paul were great, providing local information and restaurant ideas. We were only two people, so we didn't use half the house, but the outdoor living area is the main attraction. The kitchen was well stocked, and the BBQ area great. A very comfortable place to live, very private ( except for the hot air balloon suddenly appearing overhead), with great grounds where you have your own private desert garden. The location is perfect as there is easy access to everything because you are so close to the I-10 without the noise, in a quiet neighbourhood. The view is fabulous and sunrise over the mountains spectacular! We could easily live here for the winter (would have to heat the pool in the winter though)! We booked a larger house than we needed in order to scope it out for a future visit with family. We will definitely be booking again! Thank you so much Mark and Paul!

I spent a week at Casa Amapola but could easily have moved right in. The home enjoys a beautiful setting in a quiet neighborhood, and the grounds resemble a miniature botanical garden being nicely landscaped with a variety of desert plants. The home is clean and provided with all the amenities, but nothing can beat the outstanding view from the outside living room and pool area. Watching the full moon rise over the Santa Catalinas was the perfect way to end each day of hiking. There’s plenty to do in the Tucson area, including hiking in the immediate neighborhood, and the house was well-stocked with information regarding attractions and nearby sites. Mark and Paul were perfect hosts, both gracious and informative, and they made the rental process extremely easy and hassle-free. I’d happily recommend Casa Amapola to others and look forward to staying again.

From Trip Advisor: Mark and Paul were perfect hosts and their home was warm and inviting and a pleasure to be in for the two months we were there. We especially loved the patio and pool area and the killer view of Tucson. Mark and Paul were ery gracious and quick to respond when we had any questions or needed a visit from them. We would definitely rent from them again. Five stars!!!!

A great vacation home!
A great vacation home!
After a few days at Casa Amapola, you'll want to own it -- the house is that nice. We spent most of our time outside -- which is where we ate all of our meals. We watched the sunrises, the hot air balloons, the rain as it crossed the city (yes, we were lucky enough to be there during a thunderstorm), and the glow on the mountains at sunset. The neighborhood is quiet and the house is quite private. We did not bother to heat the pool -- it was not so cold after all -- and really enjoyed the spa. The kitchen is well-equipped. The house is nicer than the photos show it to be. This would be our first choice on any return trip to Tucson.

We loved our stay at Casa Amapola. The pool and hot tub were wonderful, and the outdoor patio (lanai) was huge and very comfortable with a great view. One of the highlights was watching the sunrise over the desert and the distant mountains. The villa was beautifully decorated and everything we needed was to hand. The location was excellent, very private on the edge of the desert, but still convenient for local shops and downtown Tucson. We would love to stay there again, and thoroughly recommend it to anyone. The owner was very friendly, accessible and approachable at all times. Many thanks Mark!

About the owner: We bought this property in 2005. We are innkeepers and have owned and operated Catalina Park Inn Bed and Breakfast since 1994.
Why the Owner Chose Private Homes:
Our inn is in town by the University of Arizona. We love to come up to the house when it is not rented to enjoy an escape from the city. We purchased this place with the hope of living in it full time one day. The view is amazing and the area is very quiet. The house has a very 'desert' feel to it and has an excellent layout. All our guests just love the feel of the house and often remark that they did not see as much of Tucson as they had planned as they just enjoyed hanging out and not going anywhere.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
Peace and quiet. Hanging out in the big, comfortable lounge furniture and enjoying the sky and mountain views. The house does not feel like a rental as it is so comfortably furnished and has lots of original art throughout. A full moon rising over the Catalina Mountains is especially beautiful...
