Wake up to the View of Narragansett Bay
The Bay Voyage is located just across the harbor from Newport on peaceful, picturesque Conanicut Island. Once a private home, this Victorian-style resort was built in the mid-1800s and overlooks the beautiful Narragansett Bay in the quaint seaside town of Jamestown, Rhode Island.
With its Victorian elegance and character, this is a much sought-after destination by those looking for a stylish yet relaxing retreat. Romance abounds in the award-winning dining room, which is the perfect choice for dinner for two or Sunday brunch.
For a little excitement, Newport is just over the bridge, and down on the bay, guests can rent private boats and fishing equipment for a day on the water. Land lovers will enjoy Jamestown's exhilarating bike and horse trails. And not far from the resort is Beavertail State Park, which is known for its beautiful vistas along the New England coastline.
Tour Mansions of the Golden Era or go Yachting.
Newport is known for the lavish 60+ room summer "cottages" built by the barons of industry during the Gilded Age (circa the Vanderbilts and the Astors). Many of the mansions have been restored and are open to the public for tours. The opulence and beauty of these mansions is amazing. Money was no object for these individuals who thought nothing of bringing a whole room over from Europe or installing a hidden story between floors that only servants could use. Don’t forget to walk along the Cliff Walk, the waterside walkway that connects many of the mansions.
Nestled among the mansions on Bellevue Avenue is Vernon Court, an adaptation of a 17th century French Chateau. It was designed and built in 1898 for Mrs. Richard van Nest Gambrill of Peapack, New Jersey. Vernon Court is now the home of the National Museum of American Illustration which exhibits original artworks from the 'Golden Age of American Illustration' (1870-1965) featuring the greatest illustration artists of the time.
Experience the Yachting Life Style.
Newport is also known for the America’s Cup Yacht Races. There are many places to rent a boat or to sign up for a cruise. One of them, America’s Cup Charters, offers trips aboard classic America's Cup 12 Meter yachts. Their Twelves all raced for yachting's most coveted prize, and three actually won the America's Cup. Participation is welcomed but not required! Get involved in the sailing or just sit back and enjoy the sunset on picturesque Narragansett Bay. You will sail past Castle Hill Lighthouse and historic Rose Island, and the beautiful summer White House of JFK, Hammersmith Farm off Newport's shores.
More To Do.
There are vineyards nearby and blocks and blocks of restaurants and shops in downtown Newport. The International Tennis Hall of fame is also in Newport.
Beavertail Lighthouse is a few minutes outside of Jamestown. You will want to visit it not so much for the lighthouse, but for the surrounding views. A public beach is near the lighthouse. You can walk the two blocks from the Bay Voyage to the harbor or downtown. Downtown Jamestown, only a few blocks long, is packed with restaurants and shops.
