Located one mile outside the bucolic village of Clinton, Harding Farm was built by Samuel Kirkland, in 1794. With counsel from his good friend, Oneida Chief Skenandoa, Kirkland built his home on the Western banks of the Oriskany Creek where the "grass is first green in Spring and the leaves stay on the trees longest in Fall."
At the same time, Kirkland, the missionary, was beginning Oneida Academy to educate the "Indians." The school was later renamed and chartered as Hamilton College in 1812. During its long history, the "Kirkland Mansion" was a welcome stop for the Oneida Indians, travelers passing through the Oriskany Valley and day-strollers from Utica who traveled to Clinton to walk through its beautiful Orchards. Its owners have included Elihu Root, Theodore Roosevelt's Secretary of War and the Harding Family since 1851.
They don't call it Central New York for nothing! The Farm is located near the Adirondack Park, Finger Lakes Region, Erie Canal, Oneida Lake and Cooperstown featuring the Baseball Hall of Fame, the Farmer's Museum and Glimmerglass Opera. Syracuse, Turning Stone Casino, its three PGA golf courses, the Soccer and Boxing Halls of Fame are all within a short drive.
