My parents died when I was in my 20s, and my mother asked my uncle to take over her parenting responsibilities. He was very artistic and in the 1950s became very involved in the Instituto Allende. I never got to San Miguel, though. I was a young lawyer, always working.
When my uncle died, he left me his paintings. Seeing them opened up a longing in my heart. I took my family to San Miguel, and the connection was instantaneous. Four days later, I bought a house there.
This house, which is historic, is three stories but very tiny. The furniture had to be constructed off site and then assembled inside. The true pride and joy of my restoration is the roof garden. When the sun comes up, you hear the church bells toll, dogs bark, and roosters crow. Squealing with delight, kids burst from their houses to play or go to school. And a golden light spills over the buildings. It is in those moments that my uncle is so alive to me. I hear what he heard and see what he saw. In short, I understand.

This was my first visit to San Miguel, so I didn't know quite what to expect. But what I found was an amazingly beautiful city filled with art, culture and activities. This property is great. It is spacious, well maintained and I loved the brightly colored decorations! The location made the trip--close enough to walk to everything in town without all the noises. The view from the rooftop garden can't be beat! My boyfriend and I discovered the most fantastic restaurant up the hill called Sicilia in Bocca. The food was incredible, as was the view! There is a corner market that sells fresh tortillas and we got hooked on them. We rented bikes and rode to the Hot Springs, which I highly recommend, it's a short cab ride and a scenic bike ride away from town. We also got to see a Flamenco dancing show at the local theater. The botanical gardens was also a favorite of mine. By far the best vacation I've ever had. The owners of this property were very easy to work with and accommodating, I definitely plan to go back!

I recently spent a week in this lovely house with 3 friends . The house has a fully equipped kitchen and two bedrooms. The house overlooks the city and is only a 6 block walk from the town center. There is a lovely roof garden and terrace where we spent most of our days relaxing and enjoying the view. It is truly one of the most beautiful views in the world. San Miguel is a completely safe location with no history of drug violence. We thought this was the best value and safest location that we had ever experienced. The town has numerous historical churches and sites from the 16th and 17th century. San Miguel is a Unesco World Heritage site that should not be missed.
