We understand. You need a hotel but want a home. You'd like a historic B+B, but don't want to have to rub elbows with Mr and Mrs Innkeeper at breakfast. You want privacy, a beautiful in-town stay, understated luxury and comfort, a classy kitchen with high-end appliances you may not even have at home. You want room to spread out, with space to sort through your maps, guidebooks, history books, cameras and coffee, checking email via WiFi. Comfortable bedrooms, new bathrooms with granite countertops in a yesteryear 'mansion' home you can rent like a hotel so your family can play tourist without getting stuck in a forlorn motel chain. Think of it as a London-style townhouse similar to one you would rent in Kensington to visit the Victoria and Albert Museum.
Here is the lovely note left by our latest guests from Great Britain, "We knew instantly when we spotted Cushman Place on the VRBO website that it was exactly what we were looking for. However, on arrival we were even more impressed. Your extremely tasteful decor and furnishings made it an absolute delight to stay here in Plymouth. Add to that the location so close to the waterfront, restaurants, etc, and it was outstanding. Thank you so much for a fantastic rental; we will certainly tell all our friends about Cushman Place. With our thanks and best wishes"-- Steve and Jane L. UK.
Cushman Place Residence is a beautiful 2-story, 2.5 bedroom townhouse apartment, divided many years ago from a 1900s grand Colonial Revival home located at the edge of the Historic District. Once part of a distinguished 6000 square foot manse which had a boxwood maze garden and servants galore, this private in-town 2 bedroom apartment has its own entrance and easy parking. Cushman Place living room was the formal dining room of the original manse, with its fine fireplace, crown mouldings and wainscott. Wood floors, inspiring light, delightful details, not the least of which is classy kitchen with SubZero refrigerator and Miele cooktop and dishwasher, Bosch convection oven, honed granite countertops, and sleek euro range hood ... a nice break from your conventional lodging. You'll find a powder room under the attractive staircase leading to second floor, where two gracious bedrooms (one with a view of the old garden) and a luxurious renovated bathroom, let couples, a family, a bridal party, or space-loving singles, sleep comfortably, then foray ambitiously into the exciting world of historic Plymouth, Cape Cod and the Islands.
We have now made available for rent a third-floor bedroom, adding an ocean view bedroom and old-timey bathroom with footed tub. This makes Cushman Place Residence a 3 story, 3 bedroom 2.5 bath Townhouse for larger families wanting to explore exciting downtown Plymouth.
One flight below the Townhouse dining room, you can toss a load of vacation laundry into the modern HE laundry, the new LG Tromm Steamwasher, and have visions of a by-gone day, where servants scampered about taking care of such mundane tasks such as undies and lunch.
You can rent for days or weeks, enjoying amenities we today consider 'necessities' in the privacy and comfort of home. Your own front door, just a short walk to the waterfront, Plymouth Rock, whale watching, historic sites, ships, antiques, boutiques and restaurants.
Recent guests from Nottingham noted "This is really a separate home, isn't it? On the Internet it sounds like it is part of something else, but it really is a separate home." Yes, I thought, and wondered if other guests are thinking it isn't. I decided to reiterate that.
Consider reserving Cushman Place as an alternative to a cramped hotel stay, whether for a night or two to see the historic sites, or if flying early into Boston or Providence for your Cape Cod vacation rental. In town too early to check into your vacation rental? We are here to jump start your vacation. As most waterfront vacation properties are on strict Saturday-to-Saturday, or Sunday-to-Sunday schedules, we wanted to be able to offer our incoming guests a refuge and opportunity to explore the area if their travel plans brought them to Cape Cod earlier than the check-in day. Cushman Place provides our incoming guests a place to rest, refresh, explore, and catch up with email.
Having a wedding? Brides will find this a lovely and convenient place for preparing for that special event.
Please peruse our Pleasant Places Group, waterfront wonderlands, gracious estates, romantic cottages, and chic hideaways. We consider it an honor to be chosen as your vacation home, and we work diligently to see that your trust is rewarded beyond your expectations expectations.

Luxury Townhouse/Apartment Historic Downtown Plymouth/Cape Cod
Year Purchased: 2006
Why the Owner Chose Plymouth
When Cushman Place came on the market, we were awed. The glorious architectural detail, impressive fireplaces, high ceilings with elaborate crown mouldings, glowing wood floors, boxwood maze in the back yard, servants quarters, master's chambers, charming rooms, the great condition of the home, the tree lined street, the short walk to the waterfront and restaurants...what a fun place to be! We embarked on the improvements of the Townhouse portion of this little 6000 sq foot mansion on Cushman Street and called it Cushman Place Residence. Why? well, it reminded us of the interesting townhouses we stayed in in London, Knightsbridge and Kensington. The improvements took effort, for sure, and obviously, this was the first Sub Zero ever installed in its dignified lifetime. Years ago, servants scurried all over the house, serving the Master and Mistress, and how they might have wished for the 21st century, where they'd be able to withdraw to a sleek and stylin' kitchen or state of the art laundry. For a two decades, the larger portion of the mansion was "The Mabbett House" Bed and Breakfast. It may be again some day. But we believe that modern travellers prefer privacy, first class amenities, serenity – and may I repeat, PRIVACY? Our idea is that you enter your own luxurious private space, no need to chuckle up the Innkeeper or mingle with strangers over that first good cup of coffee. But if you ever need help, we are just a quick phone call or email away.
The Unique Benefits at this Townhome
Most travelers just don't realize they do NOT have to stay in a hotel or B+B when they come to Historic Plymouth. (We'll get the word out some day, when we aren't so busy making our places spotless, serene and beautiful.) We hope that as vacationers, business travelers, re-locaters, retirees, brides & grooms, writers & artists search the Web, they'll find this townhouse at the cost of a "suite" at a downtown hotel (where their bed overlooks the sofa, and their kitchenette is merely mundane.) The mammoth ForeFather's Monument (Plymouth's Statue of Liberty) is just a half block up the hill, the Whale Watch Boats just two blocks to the waterfront, Plymouth Rock and the Mayflower Ship just two blocks more. Antique shopping, boutique hopping, bistro bopping (ok, enough) you'll love the lively, historic, fun and fascinating downtown Plymouth area.
We have just decided to rent a 3rd floor bedroom for larger families and travelers needing extra accommodation. From the elegant dining room, there is a staircase to the 3rd floor, where we can offer an ocean view bedroom and a bathroom with a clawfoot tub. We'll admit, it is a 100-year old bathroom with its original fixtures which have been refinished and added a $1000 tub-filler/hand shower to dress up the beautiful tub with gilded taloned feet. It is a charming Parisial garret, full of light and old world charm.
Owner's Map of Plymouth
Dear prospective Cushman Place Residence guests:
To me, creating the perfect getaway home is an art form. My past career had been as Art Director, designing publications, and later as an illustrator, creating magazine illustrations (google "robin jareaux" to see some examples) and painting expressionistic works on canvas. My first waterfront home was "SandyToes" vrbo 14418 -- I fell in love with SandyToes, and as perfect as it seemed, I expanded and improved it and brought out even more of its wonderful qualities with gardens, balconies, skylights, ponds and paths, drama and comfort. At that time, I was still illustrating, doing software box artwork for "Norton Utilities" and "C++" from my studio at SandyToes. When another cottage became available for renovation (Timberframe Cottage number 25445 ) I discovered this would become my work and my passion. Working in two dimensions was challenging and rewarding, but creating vacation homes that themselves are 'works of art' is on sizable 3D scale. My goal with my homes, as with my work before, is to create a setting that exceeds your expectations, and in turn, your patronage lets me continue my art form a few more years. Please read the guest comments to see the generous and enthusiastic compliments received. Please look at "all my rental listings" to see what I've been doing (yes, it has been a huge amount of endless expensive work!) to make unique and extra-special vacation getaways. It is a labor of love... for you.

My husband and I stayed here recently and the experience surpassed our expectations. I felt like a queen in the gourmet kitchen. We were so close to everything in the town, but enjoyed the the lovely and comfortable townhome so much, we stayed in more than we planned to. I don't want to rave too much because we definitely plan to come back and I'm afraid this best kept secret in Plymouth will not be available once word gets out how great it is.
Owner response:Thank you so much for your generous comments, we appreciate these kind comments and would be delighted if you could return! Again, our sincere thanks and best wishes.- R

We are pleased with our choice of Plymouth and The Cushman House for our first week on the east coast. Everything about the Townhouse has been perfect. John and Robin have been very helpful. All the furnishings are first class, and we just liked sitting and enjoying our surroundings. The location has been excellent---for walking to get the morning paper to walking down to the waterfront or down "main street". Lots to do here from Pilgrim Hall to Plimouth Plantation to the Mayflower 2. Some activities not open until after Memorial Day---but we had less crowds. Also, Martha's Vineyard Ferry about 45 minutes away. This is our first experience renting through VRBO---and we are very pleased.

The owners did not introduce themselves to us. We stayed 5 days. We talked once on the phone as we needed extra driving directions once we got into town.On the most part the property was clean but dusty.Close to town and the water front. The bedrooms were good size but the upstairs bathroom had little counter space for any personal items to sit out. Shower was good. The dining room was cramped with a small TV and a chaise lounge in the same room as the 4 seat dining table. The lounge was pushed up against a heat radiator that was wrapped with blankets.???? The blankets smelled hot when the heat was on. Very disconcerning. It was frosy at night so we used the heat every day. The front living room with the fire place was nice but we didn't use it. The kitchen was ok, very tight, enough for 1 person to cook. I would recommend family and friends to look @ other townhouses to stay.
Owner response:"JUST OK" ... ouch. T.S.Eliot wrote "April is the cruelest month," and here's proof with this review. These comments bring to mind a situation where someone buys a luxury sports car and then realized they wanted a station wagon. It happens. These ladies, I assume, looked at the listing before booking, and knew it was a Townhouse, and not a Colonial or a ranch. The pictures on the Internet show you what you are getting with Cushman Place Residence: quality, luxury, privacy, affordability, location, history, townhouse-size. Your own front door, no innkeeper or front-desk clerk (or nosy owners.) Consider the photos: You can see fairly well the size of the sleek galley kitchen (20' x 8') the dining room is (20' long x10' wide) and the upstairs bathroom. Need more space on the vanity? Just stow the amenities (like the Caldrea lotion and hand soap, fingertip towels, soap dish and paper towel holder) under the sink and voilå, more space. Cushman's is a 20" flat screen TV.( Is a bigger TV really necessary?) We have homes with bigger TVs and bigger kitchens, so when shopping for your getaway, please choose accordingly rather than pointing out that the place your chose is somehow deficient because it is the size it is advertised to be. "The kitchen was ok." Not sure how getting a granite/stainless/Sub Zero/Miele/Bosch/ hardwood floor /antique cabinets kitchen (for $30 more than a room --with no kitchen-- at the Radisson.) As for the dust, mea culpa. Our well-paid, detail-oriented cleaners and I will be that much more diligent, but thank you for saying "it was clean." As for the steam radiator behind the custom loveseat: we will rethink that before next winter. Sorry it was 'disconcerning' and we would have jumped at the chance to help you if you had phoned. There are lots of ho-hum 3-star places around, but honestly, we are not one of them. In fact we strive to be, and honestly think we are, one of the few (maybe three or less) high-end, short-term luxury stays between Boston and Nantucket. And as much as it hurts to be reviewed this way, it is a great impetus for us to do better, work harder, and make our guests happier. Wish we'd made these sisters happier, if such a thing was even possible.

Plymouth was very enjoyable - quiet but with lots of places to visit, see, and eat! We particularly recommend Plimoth Plantation. We've really enjoyed our holiday in this home away from home. (from our guest book) "A very comfortable stay indeed. The house, contents, and location are ideal. Robin and John are on hand for help and advice. As newcomoers to the US, the use of such a prized townhouse cannot be overstated. We will be back in the US next year and Cushman Place (on Jareaux Street) will be high on our list for a vacation rental. With regards" Alan and Karen

(from our guest book) "We have had a really great holiday here, thanks to you and your hospitality and your lovely home. All we needed – and more!– was here. We so enjoyed (being here) on our Ruby wedding anniversary. It was great to go out to your beach at Manomet Bluffs and park there. The restaurant you arranged in Brewster (Chillingsworth) was the best. Our next best meal was in Plymouth at Patrizia's (walking distance from "Cushy." And we had surprisingly excellent Chinese food in the food mall in Providence !! Had interesting visits to Plymouth Museum, Plymouth Plantation, Martha's Vineyard (saw Michelle Obama and daughters buying ice cream there.) We have many brilliant memories to take back to London with us. Anyone who stays here in Cushman Place is very fortunate in both the house and in its owners!" - Fredwyn, Brian, Corin, Monica, - London
