Vila Nova de Famalicao farmhouse description

Beautifully restored stone farmhouse set in the countryside but only 15/20 minutes drive to the historic towns of Braga and Guimarães. The farm makes its own red and white wine and there are fruit trees surrounding the property.
The accommodation consists of the entire ground floor of the farmhouse and is very spacious and tastefully decorated. All mod cons in the kitchen.
The owners with their 3 children live on the first floor ( but you'll have the place to yourselves from March 2013-14 when we're having an away year) and have their own entrance. They buy in wine, bread and cheese for guests' arrival.
The sitting room was the original stone wine house and its double doors open onto a wisteria covered pergola with table and chairs. Next to this is a barbecue area.
There is Wi-fi if guests want to bring their laptops, ipads etc.
The gardens are extensive and walled in. Guests are welcome to wander through the vines and fruit trees.
Behind the house there are many woodland walks
Food: There are lots of excellent restaurants in the area and the sitting room has an information file for guests, pointing out the price range of the various restaurants, BBQ take aways and giving directions how to get there.
There are hundreds of fruit trees on the farm - oranges, lemons, clementines, plums, kiwis, peaches etc - guests can help themselves, use the juicer in the kitchen to make fresh orange or lemon juice. Please note the citrus fruits and kiwis are at their best between December and March !
Eat well, walk lots, swim, visit historic towns: The owners of the farm have an up to date information file for guests and in the sitting room there is a DVD of the places of interest near the house
There are lots of walks around, swimming pools and playgrounds in Taipas ( 5-10 mins away). Lots of water sports at Geres national park, 40 mins away. A new fun swimming complex with slides into the water at Guimarães, 20 mins away.
There is an excellent adventure park, Diverlanhoso, for teenagers, 30 mins away.
Lots of places to visit such as Braga and Guimarães ( hisoric towns), Porto, the Douro valley, Viana do Castelo ( seaside) and Esposende ( seaside ).
The area abounds in monasteries ( Tibães), cathedrals ( Braga ), churches, parks and gardens.
For those interested in history there is Citania de Briteiros which is a Celtic settlement, 10 mins away.
There are restaurants and cafes in Longos, Taipas and of course Braga and Guimaraes.
Portugal itself has excellent wines- the reds from the Douro and the Alentejo are sold in the local supermarkets and are definitely worth trying ( and enjoying ).
Vinho verde ( can be red or white ) is very regional - most people who are new to the area love the white and are not too keen on the red. The locals drink the red out of bowls ( 'malgas') !
We have a dog, cat and friendly geese and ducks.
Every month of the year we have some sort of fruit ready for eating - plums in July, kiwis, oranges and lemons from November until April, chestnuts, apples and pears in September/October. We can never eat everything so guests are encouraged to eat as much fruit as they can !

It was the detail in the description and the thought that had gone into providing the extra touches that first attracted me to this property. When we arrived we continued to be very impressed. There was a welcome pack in the kitchen & Virginia & her family made us feel at home immediately. The property was very spacious, clean & equipped to the highest standard with good quality items. Virginia had prepared a comprehensive list of local ameneties & directions to the nearby attractions. The property is ideally placed for visiting several attractive cities(Porto, Braga, Guimaraes) along with beautiful countryside destinations such as the national park at Penedas Geres & the Douro Valley vinyards. The approach to the property is initially a bit challenging because the road is very steep, but after the first couple of times of driving it you will become more relaxed. I would not hesitate to recommend this property. It lived up to & exceeded our expectations.

Recommended for: Romantic getaway, sightseeing, age 55+, adventure seekers, families with young children.

Owner response: Thanks for this review - we try our best to make sure our guests feel comfortable and at home. Our aim is not to be too commercial but to make sure everyone has a super holiday. So far so good ! The north of Portugal is all windy roads and pretty mountainous, which adds to its charm but also makes sure the driver doesn't fall asleep ! When we first bought the house in the year 2000 I wondered if my old Honda Civic would make it up the hill - once I'd done it once or twice I actually got to enjoy the drive - it's like a long private avenue and you rarely meet any cars. Most people, when they get here, say it's like paradise on earth and ask me how I can bear to leave the place - it is indeed a very inspiring place to live and I don't intend to ever sell up and move on ! With three young children it's the ideal place for them to grow up. Lovely countryside, surrounded by vines and fruit trees but only 10 minutes from Braga and 20 minutes from Guimarães. We think we've got the ideal location...

We spent one week at this Quinta and we love it!! It is a beautiful stone wall farmhouse exactly like in the pictures. We were only 2 couples so each of us can have our own bathroom, which is a good treat as well. Rooms are spaceous and well decorated with a lot of nature light. and the ground is big so you can walk around and we ate fresh plums from the tree which are so juicy and fresh herbs for our BBQ meat and salad. Even though Virgina and her family were not there, she still has her friend bought in some cheese, meat, bread and vinho verde to welcome us! It was a good treat to start our stay after a bit of challenging drive to the farmhouse. ;) We BBQ most of the nights and eat all our breakfasts and dinners outside on the patio as sunlight lasted almost till 10pm every night and it was really comfortable to be outside and listening to church bell music every 15 min. on the background. And since we were there by ourselves, we felt very free to stay up late outside and chat till stars in the sky. My husband doesn't drive manual car very well, so it was a bit challenging to drive in this part of Portugal as roads are quite hilly and narrow. and road signs are not 100% clear especially going around towns. But Portugese are very friendly so we got a lot of help along the way. it is great at the end of the day when we drove through the gate of the farmhouse and totally could de-stressed with wine and food and the tranquil surrounding at the quinta. We enjoy staying out so much, not once we turned on tv ;) but we wish weather was cooler so we could use the fireplace inside the living room! Thank you Virginia for checking on us via email everyday and made sure we were comfortable in the house and we did. We wish we could stay longer! Lynn and Wayne Toronto,Canada

The four days we six (three couples) spent here were too short by a long way. The farmhouse has been lovingly renovated and great care has been taken to make it comfortable and welcoming to the (perhaps weary) traveler. Virginia and her family are so charming you feel immediately at home. Surrounding the house on every side are orchards and grape arbors, trees and shrubs make it so cozy, it's hard to make yourself leave. The beds are very comfortable and the mountain air makes for wonderful sleeping. Nearby religious retreats, castle/fortresses and world heritage sites made for marvelous day trips...and then you get to come back to Quinta da Tapada to unwind and compare notes on the day's sights and treasures. We spent five weeks driving around Spain and Portugal, staying in many different towns and villages. This stop was our absolute favorite, and we would love to come back here someday.

Owner response: Well, what can I say- many thanks! We do try our best to make sure everyone has a fantastic holiday here. So far so good. My aim is to give guests what I would like to arrive to when I go on holiday with my husband and three children. Renting out the ground floor apartment of our farmhouse is sort of a hobby for me - making sure it looks cosy and inviting, modern but not out of keeping with the look of the house. I always buy in food for guests' arrival so they don't have to go off shopping as soon as they put their bags down. I also send them a list of ideas of what there is to do and see in the area - before they come so they can plan in advance. In fact, I'm full of lists - best restaurants in the area, good food and wine guide etc! It is fantastic to be able to meet people from all over the world, a real delight! Best wishes, Virginia

A bucolic setting; a spacious, comfortable, tastefully decorated apartment; immaculately clean rooms; fully equipped kitchen (even with plenty of food to start the week!); a garden full of fresh oranges, lemons, plums, apples, nisperos, etc; a warm welcome from Virginia who will do anything to make you feel at home (and even provide daily nice and crisp vinho verde from their winery). Can’t ask for more! I give five stars because I can’t give it six!

We could not have wished for more pleasant surroundings, accommodation and generous hospitality. We all enjoyed all aspects of the region from coast to the mountains in the National Park. We were spoilt by Virginia and José and charmed by their lovely children and pets. To pick a lemon off a tree for gin and tonic and sit in the wonderful garden was a real treat. Thank you so much for the wine tour and most of all....the wine.

Thank you for being absolutely the best hosts we have ever had the pleasure to meet. You seem to have thought of everything from the directions and guide of things to see and do to the food pack on arrival. We all loved the apartment and the oh so tranquil setting. Sammy and Yvonne particularly loved the Nespresso machine but the apartment is well equipped in every way. We have had a wonderful break and hope to come back to see you again soon.

What to do around Santa Cristina de Longos" zusammengestellt. Es war für uns alle eine wunderschöne Woche! Herzlichen Dank an Virginia und José für ihre Gastfreundschaft!

Guests pay half the amount due at the time of booking and the other half 6 weeks before the date of arrival. If guests are only coming for 3 nights (in low season) the property is rented out at £300 for 3 nights. The price covers the price of diesel for the central heating and logs for the woodburner. A welcoming snack is provided for your arrival.
We have bikes for children and 2 bikes for adults, a swing and slide - but this is not great cycling country. We regularly take the childrens' bikes in the boot of the car and take them to the park in Taipas, Braga or Guimarães, where the terrain is flat. We have a large wooden baby's cot, which is perfect for babies up to the age of two. We also have lots of books and DVDs for children and their parents.

                                      Owner info

                                      Year Purchased: 2000

About the owner: Hi there. My children tell me to pass on this information: I'm very important, I have red hair, I do translations. I have 3 children., their names are Freddie, Emma and Olivia. I've been living in Portugal since 1999. My husband is Portuguese and I'm N.Irish. I like walking, hydro-gymnastics, cinema, eatiing out, holidays.... I'm now a translator but have been lots of things - a lawyer and a teacher. I speak English, Portuguese, French and Spanish. My husband is a scientist (and a bit of a linguist too!). We're all very sociable.

Why the Owner Chose Vila Nova de Famalicao:
It's well located, has great views, is very peaceful and has endless possibilities. We restored it from nothing and so if we don't like what we've created it's our own fault! The view cannot be criticised, looking out over greenery and mountains, knowing Braga and Guimarães are so close.

The Unique Benefits at this Farmhouse:
It's set in beautiful countryside, near two historic towns. You arrive to a glass of wine and traditional Portuguese tapas. I have a list of places for you to visit and if you'd like I can put together a little itinerary for you. We live on the first floor of the house, but our entrance is separate to the guests. I have a file with a list of retaurants and their price range, so you'll know where to go and won't be shocked at the price. There is a restaurant near the house, about 5 mins drive away/20 mins by foot - very traditional and very reasonable. Lots going on here - walks, gardens, churches, swimming pools, a spa with a beautiful indoor pool, different treatments, so no bad backs here! Make as much noise as you like - only one other house is within sight, and we don't hear a thing through the thick walls. This is a great place to enjoy Portugal from and is also good to just sit back and do nothing. This is a great place for nature lovers - walks behind the house, spot the mushrooms in the autumn, fresh eggs from the owners' menagerie of hens, ducks and geese. If you want gastronomic delights at home, Virginia can ask a good Portuguese cook to come in and cook you something traditionally Portuguese, with Virginia interpreting. Easter is an exciting time to find the eggs and bunnies, hidden around the garden.
