What a perfect place to stay when you go to Oahu! We had everything we needed & it was an easy walk to a beautiful beach! Rick & Tam were the perfect host & hostess because they were only there when you needed them. They had beach stuff for you to use and that made it so easy to just take a couple of chairs, beach towels & mask w/snorkel jump in the car & go...how nice! This was my 1st trip to Hawaii & would stay there every time we go back!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway, families with young children, sightseeing.

Kekailoa Cottage is a small studio, equipped with everything a visitor would need for a relaxing, almost-on-the-beach experience. We stayed for eight nights and were delighted by the Shemas' welcome to share their patio, grill and local knowledge. Everything in the studio was clean and well-kept: the bed is comfy and all the appliances in good working order. We made ourselves at home and probably should have stayed another week! We went to Waikiki, thinking we'd be closer to some of the tourist sights, but they are an easy drive from Kailua. This is a great spot in which to relax -- but it also provides the proximity to the things we wanted to do. We visited the Bishop Museum, Queen Emma Summer Palace, Punchbowl cemetery, and the North Shore from here. And it was great to be able to walk to Bob's Pizza (taking our own beer, of course!) for a great taste treat! Buzz's is a 'must do' and very close to Kekailoa -- we drove, but if you feel ambitious, head down the beach! And the beach! This listing accurately describes the proximity to what a Honolulu friend described as 'the best beach on Oahu'. We walked over every day -- and when the winter winds kept us from sitting there for hours, we walked the beach and watched the kite sailing instructors and students having a ball. Kailua has a wonderful feel to it -- it's a real community. No hotels, no motels, just small friendly places to stay -- and this has to be one of the friendliest. The Kalapawai Market is just down the road, but there are plenty of big supermarkets in which to stock up and lots of wonderful places to eat and indulge. Thanks, Tam, for the Baci Bistro recommendation -- the food was terrific and the staff friendly. Agnes' Portuguese Bakery is a great spot to satisfy your sweet tooth (and your day's calorie intake)! The two weekly farmers' markets are fun to visit, even if you don't want to buy any of the lovely fresh produce, jams and flowers. Will we come back? But of course! Not going to Waikiki again -- but Kailua's at the top of the Oahu list.Recommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, families with young children, sightseeing.

Recommended for: Families with teenagers.
Owner response: Wow! I'll have to translate this one! We have had international guests before, but this is the first visitor review in French indicating our growing clientele worldwide. We have had visitors from Switzerland, UK, France, Germany, Italy, Canada, Brazil, Australia, and of course Japan, and China. Kekailoa Cottage is the perfect place to spend your entire holiday or a stop over for a few nights between vacation spots. We have everything you need for an enjoyable vacation.

We just returned from a fantastic week in Kailua at the Kekailoa Cottage. The Cottage worked out perfect for us. Thanks to Rick, Tam and son Jack for helping make our stay possible. The Cottage is nicely furnished, in a great location, and we highly recommend it. Easy on site parking, and the short walk to beautiful Kailua Beach made us feel like we were at home. The Cottage came with access to beach chairs, ice chest and beach towels making it so easy to spend the day on the beach. Plus there is a down stairs outdoor shower to rinse off beach sand. We also had access to a washer & dryer which was great. Kailua town is a fantastic place full of fun places to shop & dine, and great people. Our favs for dining included Moke's Bread & Breakfast, Buzz's & Mike's Huli Huli Chicken Truck in Kahaluu just a short drive past Kaneohe, & Big Country Bar & Grill in Waimanalo. Also enjoyed Happy Hour on the outdoor patio at Big City Diner. For a special morning treat try Agnes' Bakery for da best Malasadas on da Windward side. Did some shopping at Kimo's Surf Hut (really nice Guys). The Windward Coast is a beautiful place, and the Koolau Mountains are truly stunning and majestic to gaze at. Be sure to take H3 when you can for a spectacular experience with the Koolau's. We hope Kailua never loses it beauty & charm, nor it's friendly residents ever changing. They do live in paradise for sure. Mahalo again Rick, Tam & Jack for a fantastic week in your Kekailoa Cottage, we look forward to a return stay. AlohaRecommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, tourists without a car, romantic getaway, families with young children, sightseeing.
Owner response: We are always very pleased when we can share some of Hawaii's beauty and culture. And when visitors are as friendly and nice as Al and Jerry, that makes it all the better. Winter is fast approaching, so make your Kekailoa reservations soon.

The place is described as a "detached studio having a separate entrance to the second floor accommodation." I wasn't sure if this would be on the second floor above someone else's living space or not. Not to worry - it is the second floor above a carport, so it is totally separate from the main house. The condo is very nicely appointed and comfortable. The many windows provided a constant cool breeze - we never had to turn on the air conditioning system. This is a perfect rental for a couple. The beach is a quick 1 minute walk away down a private path and is stunning. No negatives. I will be recommending this to anyone I know who travels to Hawaii.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway.

This property is separate from the main house. So many great things to share. The living quarters are above the garage. Off-street parking with a remote control gate to enter premises from street. Downtown Kailua within a mile or two with everything you would need: Whole Foods, Foodland, Safeway, frozen yogurt store, coffeehouse, Maui Tacos, Pepper's, California Pizza Kitchen, several more restaurants, shops, etc. Private access to beach within several hundred yards...sooo close and beautiful...great place to run on beach. Kitesurfing, kayaking, etc. Full-size frig/freezer. Comfy bed. TV even has a DVD player integrated into it. Free Wifi. Beautiful surrounding yard too with an awesome mango tree...tasted awesome! Outside patio table and chairs to use downstairs. So many great things! We are so grateful for your place and we plan to be back, Tam and Rick!!! The free massage by Elise was great....thank you! Katie was an awesome hostess too! I have already made referrals to friends before leaving Oahu! We will be back!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway, sightseeing.

The cottage was in a perfect location and I would highly recommend staying here and taking the short drive to Waikiki for the things you may want to do there. The beach that is within walking distance is great, and within a 5-10 minute walk in Lanikai Beach which has excellent snorkeling and no crowds. There are plenty of activities and restaurants nearby, and Rick, Tam, and there son Jack are excellect hosts. Also, I would recommend having Elise come to the cottage to give you a massage. My husband and I did this and it was great.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, romantic getaway, families with young children, sightseeing.

Bright and clean, this cottage was perfect for our family. If you are looking for fancy, look elsewhere, as this place is a comfy family type of residence. Located within a cluster of beautiful vacation homes and private residences, this cottage is 2 houses back from the beach and a beautiful path takes you there. Rick, Tam and their son live on the property and make you feel right at home, respecting your privacy, or talking story with you if you are in the mood. We have 2 kids, and they happily slept on futons. Our queen size bed was really comfortable. Slept wonderfully! We bought groceries and saved $ on meals by having coffee and breakfast at home in the morning, but Kailua has many wonderful breakfast choices like Morning Brew and Boots & Kimo. The beach is gorgeous, and the house is located close to Island Snow Shave Ice, Bob's Pizza, & Kalapawai Market, so food is nearby to take for your beach outings. Go to Lanikai in the morning to watch the sunrise, you will not regret it! Mahalo to the Shemas for a lovely vacation set up. It was simple, clean, and just what we needed. Be sure to ask about their masseuse!Recommended for: Romantic getaway, families with young children, sightseeing.
Owner response: Hi Pali and Stephanie: It is such a joy to have families come for a visit. Our unique location makes it convenient for a lot of fun activities on and off the beach, especially for kids. The new sofa in the cottage doubles as a futon for additional sleeping accommodations. Aloha, Rick

Very pleasant stay in this cottage for 5 nights. Great location near the beach and market for coffee and great deli food. Loved using the great local pool and tennis courts in town with the locals all for free. Rack and Tami (and their son) were very informative and helpful with everything from finding us a great physical therapist when I was in pain to giving us info on what and where to do and see. Great little home away from home. Would love to return to Kailua again when the weather is calmer. Hit a stormy week.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway, girls getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: Thank you May! We have a list of recommendations for most any need our visitors could want from physical therapists to restaurants to surfboard rentals. As far as the weather goes, wintertime can offer different weather than trade winds and mauka showers! Aloha, Rick
