Parkside Cottage Near Humboldt State & Arcata Plaza

Why the Owner Chose Arcata

We purchased a vacant lot in a newly developed subdivision in 1986. What was unique about this subdivision is that the land it was created from was originally used as a playground/ball field for the public school that it is adjacent to. Because of earthquake safety, the school had to be relocated and the property, including the structure that was used as a school, was sold to private developers. Originally, these investors wanted to develop a medium density multi-unit subdivision without a park. The surrounding neighbors protested vehemently and ultimately the subdivision was reduced down from 39 living units to just 17 which also included a 1.25 acre park. Only 3 of the 17 building lots were designated for a supplemental living unit, ours being one of the 3. The other unique feature about our subdivision, is that because it is surrounded by historical homes, we were required to build a structure that had historical architecture. This wasn’t a concern for us because we wanted to build a Craftsman style home anyway, which we did. The end result of all of our efforts (community members and neighbors) is that we created a highly desirable area in which to live and it now serves as one of the “jewel” neighborhoods of Arcata. We moved into our cottage in 1987 and lived there until our house next door was completed. What we offer you is a charming place to stay in a quiet, secure neighborhood conveniently located in Arcata.

Owner's Map of Arcata

We have lived in Arcata for over 30 years and we have lived on this property since 1987. We thoroughly enjoy living in Arcata and we especially like our neighborhood. We ride our mountain bikes regularly through the Arcata Forest which is only a few minutes from our house. We enjoy going to the farmers market on Saturdays which is only a ten minute walk from where we live. We enjoy films so consequently we have a large collection of DVD movies which are available to our guests. We enjoy preparing good meals and do so often. We share our house with our cat Jewels. Jewels was a stray who decided to live with us about five years ago. I guess she saw that only humans lived in our house and no Master

Amazing home in Arcata

Guest: Linda & Tom (Sunnyvale CA)
Date of Stay: 12/18/11 Review Submitted: 01/26/12

This charming cottage in Arcata was all that was advertised and more. The pictures and description don't do it justice. It is cozy, comfortable, and extremely well-equipped. We were there for a month and found everything we needed in the cottage. The owners were wonderful from first contact through checkout, doing everything possible to ensure we had an enjoyable visit to the area. Jim was full of suggestions for places to visit, based on our interests, and places to eat. He also provided interesting information on the local scene, from mushrooming to car restoration. We feel we have a new friend in Arcata. We would recommend this cottage to family, friends, and anyone looking for a get-away on the beautiful north coast of California. You can walk to town or to the redwoods behind the university, drive to nearby beaches and wetland areas for birdwatching, or just curl up in the cottage with one of the books in the library there and enjoy some peace and quiet. A wonderful experience all around.

Home Away From Home!

I was tempted to give this place a poor review to help keep this GEM a secret!!! Even after reading the positive reviews I was still pleasantly surprised at how lovely this place is. It is on a very pretty and quiet street and the unit itself is very private and it was spotless when I checked in. Jim and Christine have furnished it with everything you will need. I liked the walk in closet too! The bed and pillows are very very comfy and I slept very snug. I will definitely be staying again! Thanks Jim and Christine for the hospitality!

Lovely cottage in the heart of Arcata

Guest: Rose (Iowa)
Date of Stay: 09/07/11 Review Submitted: 10/22/11

We stayed for 5 nights this September while visiting our daughter at HSU and had a great stay! The apartment had everything we needed to enjoy our time in Arcata and was close to everything so we were able to walk where ever we needed to go. The owners were very helpful and respectful of our privacy and have thought of every detail. This is our first choice for all future trips to HSU.

Parkside Cottage is a gem!

Guest: Becky and Dave (Santa Rosa)
Date of Stay: 09/02/11 Review Submitted: 09/08/11

Parkside Cottage is a gem: beautifully decorated, thoughtfully equipped, and immaculately kept. Great privacy, quiet location in a charming neighborhood, and walking distance to Wildberry Market are additional attractive features. The owners are very organized, easy to communicate with, and super-helpful. What a comfortable home-away-from-home! A great place to stay to visit HSU, with lots of recreational acivities near-by: hiking, kayaking, bird-watching, beach-walking etc. Can't wait to come back!

Very Nice, Clean Cottage

Guest: Yolanda (La Crescenta)
Date of Stay: 08/29/11 Review Submitted: 09/05/11

This is truly a nice vacation cottage, with plenty of amenities. We enjoyed staying there for 2 nights and added one more night to totally enjoy the area (went to see Eureka--nice wharf, Fortuna, Ferndale--a must see, Loleta--good cheese and Scotia while staying at Arcata). Jim's a good host that he suggested many places to explore. We would stay there again when we visit the Redwood areas in the future. Thank you, Jim and Christine!

Cozy Cottage in the Heart of Redwood Country

Guest: Susan (Columbus, Ohio)
Date of Stay: 07/18/11 Review Submitted: 08/08/11

The Parkside Cottage was a fantastic base for exploring Northern California's redwood parks and dramatic beaches. Conveniently located halfway between the Redwood National Forest and Humboldt Redwoods State Park, the cottage is perfectly sized and equipped for a self-catering vacation, with high quality, comfortable bedding, excellent shower pressure, and plenty of space to relax after long walks. The fully equipped kitchen has enough space for two people to prepare a meal together, with a gas stove, all of the necessary utensils and equipment, and a cozy dining area that is also great for planning the next day's activities. The cottage also offers an extensive collection of interesting movies, books, and detailed information about local parks and restaurants. Jim's suggestions and stories about the area were very entertaining and helped us make the most of our trip. The cottage is within easy walking distance to the locally-based supermarket, town square, and restaurants. It is located on a quiet residential street with a discreet back entrance that makes it feel completely private even though it is located right next to the owners' house, and the owners have mastered the art of being very friendly and helpful without being in the least intrusive. We almost canceled our trip at the last minute when our flight to Medford, Oregon was canceled, but Jim's enthusiastic encouragement to persevere in finding a flight via San Francisco, because we would “absolutely love the area”, rescued the whole vacation (and he was right!). His suggestion to rent a car from an off-airport location in San Francisco helped us find a great deal (in Berlingame, $165 for 9 days), even though we had to rent at the last minute. Arcata is an interesting town to explore on foot, and even though the well-known national and state redwood parks are a fairly short drive away, the community forest, a mile from the cottage, is well worth exploring with 11 miles of trails and dramatic tall trees. Twenty miles north, the agate beach at Patrick's Point State Park, is an amazing place to stroll by the Pacific Ocean listening to the pounding surf in the morning, and then enjoying the breathtaking views from the cliffs along the Rim Trail in the afternoon. Hats off to Jim and Christine for saving our vacation and providing great hospitality in such a lovely cottage!

our long awaited return to arcata

Guest: amy (WILLOWBROOK)
Date of Stay: 03/25/11 Review Submitted: 06/08/11

it has been too long in writing this review, only because the pull of life has caught me up again, after our return from humboldt. i have to say ... it was a perfect vacation, and a perfect place to stay for my husband and i to rejuvenate ourselves with all that humboldt co has to offer. we absolutely loved this cottage, and the owners are wonderful, warm, respectful people, whom, we hope to see again in future road trips back to this beloved place. the cottage was immaculate. the bed was so wonderful after hiking and beach combing all day. the proximity to the square was exactly what we hoped for -- being able to wake up and walk to our favorite breakfast spot was so great. we cannot say enough about the special quality of arcata! and this cottage made it a perfect vacation! thank you, Jim!!! all our best! paul&amy

Date of Stay: 02/19/11 Review Submitted: 02/28/11

My wife and I enjoyed two nights at this charming little cottage while visiting my alma mater HSU for the first time in almost a decade. Jim is a GREAT host and the cottage leaves NOTHING to be desired. It's location is perfect, close to HSU, close to downtown Arcata and in a very quiet neighborhood next to a small park. We can't wait to take our next trip to Arcata and stay there again!!!

The Cottage was more that I anticipate with the location and an easy walk to the University and downtown. I enjoy reading from the library on the front porch. Everything that I needed to make the visit with my daughter a memorable occasion.

Spartan Luxury in Hidden Corner of Downtown Arcata

Guest: Gj and Bj (Pollock Pines, CA)
Date of Stay: 08/23/10 Review Submitted: 09/07/10

The Parkside Cottage has a wonderful feel to it, from the time you walk in. My daughter and I were quite comfortable here, and yet retained our privacy. The Cottage has every amenity we needed, and more. It is beautiful. Light abounds. The artwork on the walls is tastefully done, and includes some local scenes. The owners were kind, efficient and respected our privacy. We will stay here always when we come to Arcata.
